Video doesn't show when site is private

Why won't my video play when my site is password protected?

I have a main website that is not password protected with video that plays fine. If I turn on the password protection my videos still play fine. However, if I create a new site making it the priority site in iWeb and add video AND password protect the site, the video is missing, showing the Q with a question mark. If I turn off the password protection for the new site, the video plays fine.

Any help is very much appreciated and rewarded with a Twinkie.

Hello Jamlot,

I tried making 2 separate sites both password protected both with an embedded QT file and both play fine.

Few things to try:

1.) Reset your web browser. Safari > Reset Safari (Uncheck the options for saved names and passwords and autofill)
2.) Publish your entire website for both File > Publish Entire Site
3.) Make 2 new sites, password protect them both, and move them to the top of your list and publish. If the issue only happens with the site in question then you may have a bad movie file or a bad page.

Hope that helps

Thank you for the help MadisonP. Unfortunately the suggestions didn't work for me. I'm pretty sure my movie is not a bad movie file because it plays fine on my Main Site when it's password protected or not. I did create 3 new sites and tested it with 2 different movie files but none of them worked when password protection was on. However they showed up and played fine with password protection off.

I wonder if my iWeb prefs were deleted if that would help? One way to find out. . .

If that doest work I may just have to visit a Genius Bar.

Stay tuned.

Hey Jam,

If you followed my steps and new sites had the same issue you might have a broken Domain file.

Try the following.
1. Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer:
~/Library/Caches
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWeb.plist
2. Test again
3. Go to ~/Library/ApplicationSuppot/iWeb and rename your Domain file to Domain1
4. Launch iWeb and create a new site and repeat our prior steps of making two sites with password protection and test

- If this works then iWeb is fine. Something in your specific Domain file is causing the issue. I would suggest restoring from a backup from before the issue started occurring.
- If this does not work then try the test again in a new user account on the computer.

Now I'm really confused.

I thought for sure your suggestion of a new user account would solve the problem but to my amazement I was able to replicate the problem exactly. And unfortunately the other steps didn't work either.

I went to the Genuis Bar at the local Apple Store and they couldn't figure it out either. They did suggest I delete the iWeb app entirely and reinstall it. I'm going to give it a shot.

I'm beginning to wonder if this problem has anything to do with my MobileMe account.

It could be your MobileMe account as the password protection feature is controlled by the MobileMe servers.

However, reinstalling iWeb is not a bad idea.
Follow this article to reinstall iWeb and make sure to run all your software updates before you test again: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3249

If the issue persists at that point I would suggest contacting the MobileMe support team. Clearly outline what you've done so far (New user account with test content, reinstalled iWeb, etc).
You can reach MobileMe support via chat at www.apple.com/support/mobileme.

Cheers

Okay, I am both embarrassed and frustrated.

Reinstalling iWeb did not work. However, it DOES work with Firefox, just not Safari. I am embarrass I didn't try Firefox earlier so I can't be sure if the reinstall really made a difference with other browsers besides Safari. But now I'm frustrated to be still clueless why Safari won't play my video in password protection mode.

UPDATE:

I tried viewing the password protected site on 2 other Macs. The video did not work on Safari on both Macs but did work with Firefox so it appears to be a Safari issue, and not just located on my computer only. Side note, it does work on my iPad

Madison, if you want to test it on your Safari, below is the site with name and password. If you can, check it out soon because I will be deleting it Sunday afternoon PDT. I'd be curious to hear what happens.

Now I'm even more confused. I can't believe the video played for you much less even loaded on the page.

As for the other Macs 1 of them is on the same network as mine. The other is at my work. My Mac and the other two are completely up to date with the OS and Safari.

What do I do next? I'm totally lost for answers now.

In response to your previous post about the space issue in the name, I just uploaded an additional movie without any spaces in the file name just below the video with the the space and it showed up and played fine where as the other one still doesn't show. In addition, I did not check Remember Password In Keychain when I signed it.

So ultimately it looks like the problem is in the naming of the video with spaces.

I'm curious Mr. or Mrs. Apple, if I have an authentication error with Safari, Quicktime X and HTTP basic authorization, do you have any suggestions on how I could fix that?

Well it looks like my problem has been solved, but I'm still left with questions. In the meantime, it appears to be spaces in the naming of the video. For me it still doesn't explain why a password protected site wouldn't play video with a space in the name in Safari but a non-password protected site would play the same video.

I want to thank Madison and Mr. or Mrs. Apple for your help and responses. I learned a lot. I owe you both Twinkies.
