New 85W Magsafe not working with 2008 C2D Macbook Pro but works with i7

I have a mid 2008 (previous style) 15" Macbook Pro that works fine with all three of my old style 85W magsafe adaptors.

My new 15" i7 Macbook Pro works with all of these old Magsafes and works fine with its new-style Magsafe that came with it.

But the older Macbook won't charge on the new style Magsafe - the light does not come on and the battery drains.

I just can't work out why this would be. Does anyone have any tips?

Macbook Pro 15" (2.4Ghz/4GB RAM), Mac OS X (10.6.3)

I'm having the same issue with my new 85w Magsafe adapter. I have to turn my laptop off, take the battery pack out, hold the power button then plug in the adapter... SO annoying! What the heck Apple!? What do I do to fix thisss??? My battery is dying as I'm typing this so off I am to re-do the entire process for the 10th time today, just as I explained above.

PS- Has Apple found a solution yet... or admitted to messing up? Or are we all just screwed because of another poorly designed product?

Bought a new magsafe charger and it doesn't work on my Late 2007 MacBook. As others have said, if you plug in the charger, then remove your battery and reinsert the battery, the charger will begin to charge.

I had purchased the new magsafe in Hong Kong after leaving my charger at home in the States. Bought it at an authorized Apple retailer called iWorld, which I would highly recommend you avoid, since even though the charger wouldn't work in their store, they refused to refund my money. I went to an authorized Apple service center in Hong Kong and they were kind enough to replace the new L charger with a new T charger and now all is well. (Except that the adapter has three giant prongs for use in Hong Kong instead of two little blades for use in the US--an easy problem to solve.)

Don't leave me out! I have the 2008 Macbook pro. I have been through three T chargers in two years. I am up again to replace and bought the new L charger. The first one did not make a connection at all. It doesn't power up on my computer or any of the other three that we have in our home. I thought it was defective and took it back, exchanged it and came home to find that #2 doesn't work either. I then discovered that I can't purchase a T charger anymore. I made an appointment with a "Genius" and was told that they are having problems and Apple is "gathering information" at the moment. It seems to me that if you know there is a problem with the new, give me the option to buy what works....the old! The new adaptor does not fit through my InCase which I purchased at the Apple store with my computer. Huge flaw as it not only protects the appearance of my computer, but the case keeps my lap cool from any heat and also prevents my laptop from sliding all over the place. What "Genius" designed these new chargers? So now I have a computer that is just two years old and it's rendered useless because I can't charge it. I really feel like this charger should first of all....work, and the connection should be compatible with the cases that Apple sells in store alongside these computers. I also feel that if they are so prone to failure, they should either be less expensive to replace or be covered by my warranty. Oh...you may be wondering how I am writing this if my computer doesn't work. I am using my husband's PC which he hacked into a linux machine. Had it for years. Never had a single problem. Nothing but problems with Mac for the past 3 years. Time for a change. Really Steve, get it together. I feel another Class Action coming on!

I can confirm the BUG and the already described procedure on a new Magsafe Powersupply (85W) - L-shaped, and Early 2008 Macbook Pro (v4.1).
*Out of the box the new power supply doesn't work at all with the MBP 4.1*

-> *Procedure to make it run*:
- shut down the computer
- pop out the battery
- push the battery-indicator button
- put it back-in and restart

-> above *procedure must be repeated* every time as soon as the computer runs without power-supply and is being restarted....

This worked for me! Just pushing it in a little seems to engage the charger without having to remove the battery. Awesome!{quote}

No way, *nothing similar helps* !! Of course you should check the pins and contacts to make shure the're clean, but none of this helps. annoying!!

Case update,

I was sent a new charger with the older style connection, and it charges just fine.
BUT, despite my sending back the one PURCHASED from BEST BUY, no credit for the $71.00 for over one month. So now I paid TWICE to get one spare working charger!!! I am one ****** off MBP owner.

APPLE, you do not let us file a claim for a purchased accessory! You tie it to my laptop serial number and tell me the warranty expired. Guess what, my original charger works just fine.

Your engineering/manufacturing teams screwed up on the pin depth. Face it and come up with a solution. I want my $71.00 credit on case #173331606.

Another update,

I scheduled a tech call and went up through 3 layers of management before being told it will now be solved. I think the call went over an hour with a callback as well. Just waiting for the credit now on my AMEX card.
I highly recommend you buy the right charger via the link another person supplied that shows the different styles.

Hi:
Just four hours ago i received a new magsafe 85W "L" from apple store in Spain.
I read this post a day after i ordered it.
I just call applecare before use it and they explain me that apple is looking for a solution for the problem. He said me if the magsafe doesn't charge my macbook pro, i can return in 14 days.
After an hour, the same person called me and said me that there is an internal information. He asked me if the magsafe works (it works and charge fine). I asked about this internal information: call applecare if the user has to remove the battery to work. Then, they change the new magsafe with a new "old" magsafe.
I test my magsafe for an hour (restart with/without magsafe) and always runs fine.
I wait for a couple of days.

after testing both sorts of MagSafe-adapters (L- & T-shaped) I found out and easily can reproduce the following:

The _new L-Adapter *won't supply the computer (green light ) nor load the battery*_ after RESTART/RECONNECTION IF the battery in the macbook pro (early 2008):
+ was never loaded before with a new L-shaped adapter
+ previously was charged by an L-shaped adapter and changed its LED-status from orange to green
(i.e. the battery is full)
-> shutdown, pop-out and back-in the battery and restart. -> power supply or battery-loading runs fine.

The power-supply or battery-charging will work even after shutdown and reconnection if
+ the battery was previously charged by the new L-type magsafe, but charging had not yet finished
(i.e. LED-status stays orange) -> it'll continue charging after restart/reconnection

(annot.: restart/reconnection = shutdown, disconnect computer from power supply and reconnect again, and boot again)

In every situation, the old T-shaped MagSafe works flawlessly - this means you can connect and disconnect it any time you like and it will charge or supply with power (green + orange led).

As soon as you use the new L-shaped MagSafe and the computer is running at full battery (green led) and you shortly disconnect and reconnect it, it won't work anymore and you have to restart/pop-out-in battery again .......

interestingly there seem to be new L-shaped MagSafe's that seem to work perfectly, you can check it in stores, where macbook pro's are running and being supplied with power.

please everyone tryout the situations described above and let's see your feedback !!
