On Dashboard open the widget manager, locate the unwanted widget and delete it. Or you can look for them in the /Home/Library/Widgets/ folder.

Thank you very much! I was unable to close the old version of that widget, but now it should disappear!

In the widgets screen, at the left hand bottom corner there is a + sign. click on that it will become X sign and a button Manage widgets... will appear . Click on it and in the manage widget click on the 'no entry' symbol.

Usually when you double click a widget, it asks to replace the older one.

it didn't, but since then, the system crashed and required my hard drive to be wiped out!

I installed Time Machine Buddy widget and then it stopped functioning. I tried to delete it using Manage Widgets, however when the widget manager window opened, nothing was listed. I noticed an x button on the top left corner of each widget and clicked on that to delete the Time Machine Buddy. Now, the widget manager window will not close by clicking on the x button

Turns out all my widgets locked up. On another discussion thread I found this: Try trashing a preference file (com.apple.dashboard.plist) and restarting. That will restore the default widgets and you can go from there to customize.

    It fixed my issue.
