Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

Don't know if that is a correct statement. I am up to date with my S/W, using version 4.2.1 per Settings>General>About>Version.

I also came across a posting saying that there is data being sent for advertising purposes, so that advertising can better be targeted to your phone. But you can opt out by going to the following URL on your iPhone (via Safari),

    http://oo.apple.com

BTW, I was also reading some of the Legal stuff at the bottom of the About page on the iPhone and it may be also that Google is retrieving a lot of information from your iPhone. So if you have the Google app you may want to reconsider unless there is a way to opt out.

I can "almost" say that I do not mind this data being sent, but being charged for it, adds insult to injury...

Hope this post will not disappear

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that I thought the software update was the ultimate solution to all ills. Just that it DID seem to help somewhat, because my problems have calmed down, and since I have an older iPhone model, it seems to help the older phones in addition to the newer phones, which is what Backpacker said.

I'm not actually sure which day I installed the new software, and wouldn't be able to correlate the two events anyway, since my huge data charges seemed to occur sporadically. So I think my anecdotal evidence supports the theory that the software update might have helped this issue, but I don't think we're QED here.

Opting out of iAds opts you out of the targeted ads. Unfortunately it doesn't opt you out of the data collection or the data's transmission to Apple. You just won't see the ads - you'll see generic ones instead.

I also dislike the lack of transparency on how the opt out works. There's no detail on whether it's cookie-based, linked to your device's ID or something else entirely. So we have no way of knowing what may cause an inadvertent opt-in.

I found this thread looking for an explanation for why I am quickly using up my 200mb data plan. I switched to a new phone about 4 months ago and went for the limited data plan. Since then I have gotten warning messages from ATT about approaching the plan limit early in the month. So this month I have been checking data usage every day. After 6th day of my billing cycle I had used 30MB. Today I got a message "nearing data plan limit"
Went on line to see data use entries:

    12/21 10:23 PM 206-669-8959 Text/IM Messaging Sent 1Msg
    12/21 09:16 PM phone Internet/MEdia Net Sent 156787KB

So last night while I was at a dinner party enjoying desert, my phone in my pocket did something that used 157MB of sent data. What could possibly be going on here???

Henry Mustin asks, "What could possible be going on here?"

I assume Henry has not read the whole thread (it took me several days and that's when it was only 55 pages long).

First, I think everyone agrees the time stamp never accurately reflects when the data is actually used (if the data was used), it may be when the phone's data session terminated, or be related to some other accounting procedure. This is speculation, I don't think Apple or AT&T have ever offered a believable explanation.

Second, many people have had this unexplained data usage disappear or be reduced after updating to iOS 4.2.1 which became available around November 21.

Third, many people feel it is useful to complain to Apple and AT&T and especially to file a complaint with the FCC. Apparently the FCC contacts AT&T and requires them to contact you.

That said, apparently most conversations with Apple or AT&T involve no understanding on their part of what the problem may be and mostly result in them telling you that you are watching videos, or upgrading applications or whatever.

Many of us are using an iPhone application called DataMan. It is a very useful way to measure your actual usage, providing very accurate time stamps and also geographical location information if you have that capability.

Although the AT&T usage claims for my wife's and my iPhones seems more reasonable since I upgraded to 4.2.1, it is still very discouraging and to some extent, spoils some of the fun of having the phone, since you are always worried that you will go over the limit for no reason.

I may be forgetting something, if so, I'm sure someone will jump in with it. Good luck!

    Interesting post!

The opt out is only for iOS4.

    Opt-Out Was Not Successful
This device is not running iOS 4. iAd Network advertising only appears on devices running iOS 4.
To opt out of interest-based ads on a device running iOS 4, go to http://oo.apple.com
If you have more than one device with iOS 4, you must opt out from each one individually.
If you need additional support, visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4228

I have a 3G iphone and have held off updating to newest versions due to other people's bad experiences after updating. I'm sure it has something to do w/the newer versions being too "heavy" for the older phones to handle.

I'm wondering how many people have had this experience and what are the actual results you're having? Is it really worth doing the update?

Handy-man, if you check my recent posts, I also have a 3G and have had some luck with the updates. I was also resistant to updating. I had done it once when iOS4 first came out and it completely bogged down my phone, to the point where I restored from an old OS3 file.

There are have been several improvements to iOS4 to help with performance on the older phones. I won't say that I don't notice a slow down -- it's still most obvious when using Google Maps. But it's not as bad as it was a few months ago, and I am one of the lucky ones who seems to have had her data usage issues disappear in the last billing cycle or two. Last month I think I only used about 80 MB of data, which is about right.

I thought I had this problem solved, but this month, I've had two episodes of very high data transfer again. Just got a text last night from ATT that I'm at 90% of my dataplan. As someone said a few pages ago, the only way to keep this from happening is to stop using most of the features of the phone.

As it is, I already don't have most of my email to the phone (just one account that I hardly ever use), occasionally use local features like yelp or traffic reports, and use Facebook only about once daily, then shut it down. Most of the time I leave my phone without data enabled, just to keep from these large uploads. I'm beaten down by the efforts to monitor this.

Try turning off your blue tooth when not using--had same problem and between useless AT&T tech and the Apple tech (he knew what he was talking about), finally determined it could possibly be the blue tooth being left on 24/7.

    Good luck.

Same here. I have to now resort to turning off my 3G when not in use and manually fetching email once I turn it on. Apple techs seemed to care but could not help, ATT techs were belligerent and blamed me.

I thought I had the problem solved, but recently it has come back worse than before.

The "problem" will not go away until the root cause goes away. Apps that you have that send data with or without you knowing.

There is an interesting article in the Washington Post,

    2010/12/28 - AR2010122803648

that people in this thread might be interested in. It is now my belief that this is not a "glitch", nor is it bluetooth related as somebody suggested!!!

It looks like there may be several apps sending info out ...

I do not know if it is OS version enabled, i.e. if you stick or revert to versions previous to the 4.x releases this will be fixed. It is apps that send out information. It is not email that sends out information. That would imply that when you send emails they do not go out and are "batched" together and sent after midnight. That would completely defeat the purpose of email as almost instantaneous communication, come on people !!!

Iv been having the same problem... I recently updated the firmware from 4.1 to 4.2.1 and then it all started, tried doing a complete restore as a new phone and synced only my contacts, there aren't any apps on the phone, no mail id's, location services is off and almost everything i can think of is turned off except cellular data... the phone still does a lot of data transfer continuously on standby...

Iv tried calling apple care on the toll free number loads of times, every time i call a different rep picks up and i have to explain the whole problem all over again, they guide me through the regular procedures and then the problem isnt solved, they put me on hold or just disconnect the call (iv never been rude to them ever)...

Iv noticed the data transfer starts almost immediately after using internet either on safari or maps( actually any app that uses internet ). It keeps continuously transferring small amounts of data sending and receving almost every 30sec until i turn off cellular data...

Initially i thought it might be data sent by apple for error reporting, so i connected to itunes and reset warnings for the phone, i immediately synced again and a dialog box opened asking if i want to send error reporting to apple, i opened show details and deleted the error logs, and clicked "no thanks" just to make sure...

even now i still have the phone sending and receving data continuously... plz if someone can help or give any suggestions it would seriously be appreciated...

This month got worse. One thing that I've started to do INSTEAD OF TURNING OFF CELLULAR DATA COMPLETELY is that after using internet enabled apps (especially Google but not exclusively), I double-click on the control button so that all the currently open apps line up on the bottom. Then I hold my finger on the troublesome apps until the red circle appears & shut them down.

I do believe that Facebook & Google, if left on in the background, keep updating & this might be part of the problem. But this way I don't have to completely shut off the smart functions of my phone all the time.
