Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

Same here. My data usage was going to come in at about 180MB close to my billing period end. 20MB under. Awesome!

Then I checked my usage again, and W T F!!?! 270MB. That's right kids, during an hour when I was positive my iPhone was not being used heavily, it found a way to transfer over +90 megabytes+ of information according to a +single line+ on my usage report, that one transfer pushing my iPhone from safely under the monthly cap, to well over. I call shenanigans!!!

The "problem" will not go away until the root cause goes away. Apps that you have that send data with or without you knowing.

There is an interesting article in the Washington Post,

    2010/12/28 - AR2010122803648

that people in this thread might be interested in. It is now my belief that this is not a "glitch", nor is it bluetooth related as somebody suggested!!!

It looks like there may be several apps sending info out ...

I do not know if it is OS version enabled, i.e. if you stick or revert to versions previous to the 4.x releases this will be fixed. It is apps that send out information. It is not email that sends out information. That would imply that when you send emails they do not go out and are "batched" together and sent after midnight. That would completely defeat the purpose of email as almost instantaneous communication, come on people !!!

i'm not buying your explanation. my wife's iphone has no downloaded apps. none. every push or location is off, and it still transmits some data around midnight. also opted out of iads.

    iinami,

Please do not buy anything as I am not selling. If you've read other postings (i.e. from ed2020, which you may buy or not) that opting out of iADs, does not stop the push of information from your iPhone. It merely stops you from receiving targeted ads, you will still receive, let's call them generic ones.

The push may also be not application specific but platform specific, i.e. OS based, and that would explain why it does not show in data counts on the phone vs the counts that AT&T is saying. Additionally, even if you get the DataMan app, its counts would still not show the traffic and just duplicate the counts of the iPhone, suggesting that this traffic is discounted at the OS level.

As I said in other forums, I am not seeking any monetary rewards, I am not selling anything. I just want to be able to use my iPhone, which right now I cannot due to this data push. As a loyal Apple customer I find this whole situation very frustrating.

What is the "Safari Window Shutdown"? I have searched online for this and cant find anything other than your post here.

I, too, have found myself in this need to scrutinize my data usage after seeing that I havent gone over 200M but once in 24 months. However, I switched on 12.31 and now I see that I am 1/3 of the way to going over 200MB and I've got 23 days left in my cycle! Its all because of these massive uploads to "the collective".

I think we need an iPhone firewall of sorts.

In Safari, tap on the icon in the lower right corner that brings up the open window manager and tap the "x" in the upper left corner of each window that you want to close. This is only necessary for sites that dynamically update content in the browser.

The firewall will not work, since no known app is showing as transferring the data. I did use one program, which is pretty good actually, left it to log all the transfers overnight, and nothing showed up as being transferred.

yet, I am probably one of the few that does not have this issue with mysterious transfers, so maybe that is the reason nothing showed in the log?!

OK, thanks. I have done that. I am hoping to reduce or, better, eliminate this mysterious data transfer...

Just a thought regarding what may or may not be going on. I have a 3G running 4.2.1 and have not had any issues.

Is there any chance that those of you having significant problems with this have 1 or more IMAP accounts set up on the phone and that it is syncing email in folders other than your inbox? For example, large volumes of spam that are being filtered at the server into a separate folder, but may still be syncing?

It may not explain everything, but it could be a contributing factor.

I used to have my email set to push but turned that off long ago. But I only recently switched to 200MB and began looking at my data usage each day since 12.31.2010...

I dont have notifications on. No location data set to on. No push email...

So maybe what I will also do is delete and recreate my email account just to see. If we are to be stuck with this upload stuff then I want them to get the least data they need each day.

I recieved the "you used 80% of your plan" message on my son's iPhone, so I asked him to not surf the web when off wifi, shut off all apps before sleeping the phone, and turn off the phone at night. The phone had been used on and off for the week, but even when he surfs the web, I can't imagine using that much data. There is no way he can surf that much, nor does he receive that many emails. Email is set to manual anyway. When he plays games, it is usually at home where we have wifi.

I turned on his phone during the day with no apps running. Of course, the wifi went to sleep and I turned off his phone after 3 hours. Within an hour, I got a message stating he went over his data plan and the account showed 30 MB transferred. Unbelieveable.

I sync his phone every few days and disabled sending diagnostic info to Apple, so something is wonky.

I called AT&T for credit, which they honored without issue, and they gave me Apple's support number too.

Its good to know that we can call AT&T and get credit for that data we're not transferring..

It's been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but at the current length, I don't think anyone can keep up…

The timestamp on your statement is not the actual time the data was used, it's when the data session closes. I'm not a cell tech, but from my understanding, a data session can close for a few reasons, one if them being inactivity, another turning off the phone. So if your son was using the phone for 3 hours, then shut it off, the data session would close a little after that, Which is why you would've gotten the notification after the phone was turned off. Roaming data use (not actual off-plan roaming, but using data included in your plan, but on towers AT&T doesn't own) could further delay reporting of the data used.

Having said that, I still believe there are issues people are having with either inaccurate data tallying on AT&T's part or something wrong with actual data transfers. I really believe those should be in a new thread, as they could then get the attention they need.

I really think what would solve most people's problems would be transparency on AT&T's part for how they actually tally data, as it appears to be a complicated issue. Or, in the very least, better educate their support staff. From Apple, I love to be able to tap on the data usage item
In the settings app and see it broken down by app vs system use.

Yes, I understand this (and AT&T displays this prominently on their emails), but good to reiterate. My test wasn't scientific, but it is very suspicious that 30 MB was logged after the wifi went to sleep with no apps running.

Now, he turns off 3G data and only turns it on when he needs to look something up while outside of the house. Reiterating I'm sure, but SMS text and phone work fine with 3G data turned off. I think he disabled notifications too, but I'll double-check.

Dumb way to use a smart phone.

you know they would remove such answer, the moment you mentioned "those" things...

    @ moderators

you do know that whomever is subscribed to the topic still get the message as an email...even if after it gets removed....

Yea, thats smart. As if there arent plenty of other venues that we'll post the exact same suggestions? Idiots. Clearly, Apple must be in cahoots with them then. Oh well. Driod might be looking good now.
