Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

The "action" that someone mentioned is already underway--- two of them filed in December

Thanks. I am joining them. First I need to file my complaints with the appropriate people. God forbid I even mention that! We wouldnt want to help others now, would we.

Yea, thats smart. As if there arent plenty of other venues that we'll post the exact same suggestions? Idiots. Clearly, Apple must be in cahoots with them then. Oh well. Driod might be looking good now.

Not really. ALL smart phones have the same issue, it's not just iPhone. read the android support forums, as well as the trade press, and you will see the problem is even worse with alternative products. Plus the fact that android phones randomly send text messages to the wrong recipient. So it's much more likely the carriers as they are the only common factor.

There is a 3rd party that sits between the carriers and Apple---- the issue(s) are not just one thing and the privacy and wiretap violations mentioned should shake out the remaining issues--- of phantom data usage.

Ok, so no droid. But to explicitly DELETE comments like that? One company should know better than to protect another company that is going to be under a massive spotlight very soon. Shame on Apple for deleting comments meant to be helpful to its very own consumers.

    3rd party = advertisers maybe?

the 3rd party I'm referring to has to do with numbers (LNP), maintenance and keeping the IDs straight in the exchange between carriers and then billing.

But you are correct--- the third party is i-Ads and outside data collection of your iPhone and your "contacts info" is also being harvested.

Yea, now I see hundreds of blogs mentioning this data issue and, also, the deleting posts in this forum issue. It never occurs to people to seek these things out and in this day and age you'd think companies would be smarter than they act with so many people talking. Hmm... maybe this topic will begin to trend on twitter soon too.

Well, for someone who has about TEN contacts total and sends about TWO emails a day and doesnt browse the internet on the phone for weeks at a time, using 87MB out of 200MB just 5 days after I switched to the 200MB plan (with 23 days left in my cycle) is more than cause for raising a certain eyebrow or two. However in the past 2 years I've only gone over 200MB 2x and by less than 15K each time and that was when I first got the phone and didnt have WIFI in my house.

As it stands now, my iPhone is crippled. I have 3G turned OFF when in my house. I use WIFI only. I have Notifications turned OFF. Location Services turned OFF and I will turn on Airport Mode when I go to sleep at night OR just power the thing down completely.

I can no longer enjoy the use of my phone as I used to.

OH - and I have email push turned off and whatever else would cause the phone to be operated in a fashion that was meant by the marketing team. Nice, eh?

I hope that Apple and AT&T understand that this issue is going to cause me to keep my iPhone 3GS with its unlimited data plan as long as possible. If they want me to pay them for a new iPhone sooner, without offering an unlimited plan, they'd better get to the bottom of this problem that forces my phone to report more then 200MB used even when I'm using every tip in this thread to try to intentionally limit data use away from my wifi.

So THAT's how 3 of my credit cards' numbers were stolen = from my Banks entries in iphone Contacts! I SUSPECTED!!! After the 3rd theft in 2 months (Sept.-Nov.2010), I had deleted all Banks from iphone Contacts, no more card number thefts since.

(& Yes, maybe I was a ditz for adding the card #'s in iphone Contacts in the first place, along with Banks' addys, phones, websites, etc., but I thought it was safe since phone STAYS HOME & NOBODY has ever touched it but me, & I thought it was as "safe" as keeping personal info on a Mac. Ten years on the internet & never one such problem until I began using iphone EXCLUSIVELY to shop/pay bills, etc.)

Time to delete ALL CONTACTS then, not just Banks, but friends, family, etc.!

I'm pretty sure you can keep the original unlimited plan even if you upgrade to iphone 4. When the new phones & data plans were announced, I had saved the official ATT announcement from their site... which said basically the same as this snip from CNET from 6/14/10:
    (...)
"But nobody will be forced to switch. If people are happy with their current plan, they can keep it, which I expect many to do. In fact, AT&T says that people "are not required to switch to the new plans if they renew their contract or switch to another smartphone. However, if they switch to one of the new plans, they will not be able to go back to their old, unlimited plan."
