Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

    *Time for a sanity check----*

Are customers still having 'phantom data' usage? Not the late night billing issue---- DO you think that your data usage charged to your carrier account is in error (too high - inexplicable data traffic amounts)???

    Thank you for responding.

Just now accidently stumbled upon this article dated 1/19/11, what a hoot (funny)...

It's re a current Supreme Court case of FCC vs. ATT, where ATT is trying to finagle its way out of Freedom of Information requests by saying it/ATT is a "person" so should have "personal privacy rights." Lol. Humorous article.

I just noticed a problem when I got a notice saying that Ive used up to 60% of my data. I usually only use my phone when it is hooked up to wifi. Also I get this message 6 days into the billing cycle and normally never get that high of usage in my billing cycle. Most of the data usage happens when I am asleep or at work and have no access to my phone. And these are large data usages, not typical of any of the apps I normally use. Also, I am getting charged for using my internet on my phone when I know I am hooked up to wifi at my home. A time when I shouldnt be charged. ATT says this has nothing to do with them. I just wonder if apple has an explaination

If you have Netflix (Apple TV or whatever) watch "The Corporation"(2003), a documentary. Corporations are "persons". In this film they explain when this happened, why it happened, etc., among other things. It's very illuminating.

Are you aware that the phone will use 3G for data transfers when the phone is asleep, even if you are in a WiFi zone? This is to preserve battery life.

Are you aware that the timestamp on data transfers is NOT the time the transfer occurred, it is the time accumulated data transfers from earlier are reported to the billing system? The actual transfers could have taken place any time up to a day before the timestamp.

The only way to find out when the transfers actually occurred is to use a 3rd party app such as Dataman. But it consumes battery power, so will somewhat reduce your battery life.

Hey there everyone -- just to refresh, I've been following this thread for a couple months. I had an iPhone 3G with the same problem everyone else is talking about, went a few rounds with both AT&T and Apple every month. AT&T always took off my overage charges, and I got them to not charge me for the data plan one month because I was basically too scared to even use it anymore, in fear that I would incite another 40MB data dump at night.

I updated my software to 4.2 or whatever the most recent version is, where Apple was touting the "security fixes." Around the same time, my data overages evaporated. The last two months, my data usage has been 83.1 MB and 100.2 MB. So, yay, right?

My contract (and my Applecare agreement) were up this month on the 3G. I've noticed in the past month, my 3G has slowed down considerably, to the point where maps is mostly unusable. Last night I upgraded to an iPhone 4, and the extremely helpful sales clerk told me that iOS 4.2 is fundamentally incompatible somehow with 3G, and will just continue to bog the phone down. Also, you cannot revert to an earlier version of the OS. So my phone was basically dead in the water.

While I'm sure there's a whole other very angry thread on the iOS 4.2 / iPhone 3G issue, I thought I would just mention it here also, because while the software upgrade seemed to fix my data overage charges, it killed the phone.

Here's hoping the new baby 4 doesn't get the midnight data munchies.

Man!! Am I glad I read your post, magreen17. I was extremely concerned of my 3G's capability to support/run the 4.2 update (I'm running 3.1.3); however, I had posted a question about other people's experiences on their 3G w/the update. I practically had my finger on the "update" button....not anymore, I'm sticking w/what I have.

As for the 4.2 update on the iPhone 4, I just updated my daughter's new phone; anxious to see how/if the data dumps would change....nope. I've seen as much as 175 MB in one dump.

Could it be that these dumps aren't all from ONE day? I previously posted where one of my statements showed 12-14 line items that were from the previous month's time period but didn't show up until the next month's statement. I suppose the same could be true of the 175 MB dump; may that was an accumulation of a couple of days that didn't come through on the previous days' dumps.

I realize I'm probably grasping, here!!!

You know, I don't think my phone was doing too bad on 4.1, which is what made me feel like I could keep my 3G up to date. I didn't notice the 4.2 slowdown right away, either. One, I was used to not using my phone as much because of the overage issues, and two, I was just happy that those problems had gone away I wasn't looking for negative consequences of the upgrade. Like I said, the AT&T rep in the store is who put two and two together for me.

    Hi Guys
I have been having the same problem with Vodafone and have been having data usage of upto 2,598,654 and as low as 74, this has been costing in excess of a couple of hundred quid and seeing as i have been using wifi and data cables from my pc something is most definatley wrong and it seems that neither Apple nor Vodafone have any ideas except vodafone say not their problem pay up...
I too have looked around the net for answers and so far none given. the ammount of data usage is extreme in some cases and before anyone asks, all the apps and data etc have been disabled. There is a huge con going on here and we as consumers are deliberatly being left in the dark and expected to pay the bills...NOT ON

Just thought I add my 2 cents
I looked up this topic because I was getting 20 mb data charges at 12 am
I checked bill because was thinking of going to the 200mb data plan and was slightly over, which was surprizing considering my usage. these are by far the biggest chunks of data usage. I would not have recognized it except Im a sleep then (wake up at 6 am for my job). also since I and the phone are at home if i used it it should default to my wireless setup.
no explaination, im going to call att, if they tell me anythig intelligent or useful I'll post again

Well, then I guess I dont expect you to post here again as ATT will never add anything intelligent or useful.

Good luck but I dont expect you'll get anything out of them. Well... unless you call the runaround something........
