Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

Okay - I live in NEW ZEALAND....  I can not account for "2am" data packages being sent but came across my first unknown data usage at 5:23pm NZ time.

Yesterday, Sunday, was the first time I noticed a large, unexplained, data blimp - 66MB - while I was cooking dinner - NOT using my iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1)......

I have only had data on my phone for the past two months.  I have a small limit (100MB) which should be all I need, given my type of usage....

Before upgrading to iOS 4, my phone would happily access wifi when 'sleeping'.  Now, it seems its state of rest in in 3G data mode.  What gives??  Why is this?  Is there not somewhere we can select wifi or 3G mode?

    Thanks!

    Andrew

The reason for the data transfers you see are not clear, but is is some application that is using data. The other questions you asked are answered hundreds of times in this thread, but I can't blame you for not reading it all.

No iphone has ever kept WiFi on when the phone is asleep. If it did the battery wuld drain in a few hours, as WiFi, unlike 3G, must maintain a continuous data "handshake" when active. 3G can just "listen" for activity; WiFi cannot.

You have no way of knowing when the data transfer actually happened. The timestamp on your bill or online usage report is the time data accumulated over a long time period was reported to the billing system. if you want to know specifically when data transfers occurred you need an app like Dataman, which tracks your usage, when it occurred, and where you were when it occurred.

    Eddie,

so what do i need to do to fix this problem, b/c i just got my iphone for my bday june 22 and i got the msg this weekend that i'm over usage already, i went look at the usage log and b/t 12-1a, 97000kb on july 2 , 76000kb a few nites ago, every nite its somthing, so i called at*t and said to turn off my phone at nite or somthing is updateing, well hello!!! i need my phone ON in case of family emergency or somthing, how stupid is that suggestion, and she said something might be downloading and of course b/c of privacy issues they can't tell what apps it might be!

anyways, i read the posts on here and i switched the push notifications and locations /notifications, all the things that were suggested in ya'll posts, i changed them all to manual, is there anything else u can suggest, b/c i can't keep affording to have to pay extra every month!

    thanks in advance

    shelly

Well, you can turn off cellular data and leave the phone on, but you have to find the app that is using that data. Do you stream audio or video? Those are the most likely heavy data users. Also multiplayer games.

Settings/General/Network - Cellular Data OFF. This will stop data transfers as long as it is off, but if you have an application that is using data when you turn it back on it will catch up. BTW, acebook uses a lot of of data if you have it set to get updates, and multiploayer games also use a lot of data.

If you want to try to track it down buy the app "Dataman" - It will record all data usage, when it occurred and where you were. So you can correlate data usage with what you were doing.

I live in Kenya and am using an iPhone 4 16Gb on Pay As You Go.  Only business users can apply for Pay Monthly plans here.  This has actually been beneficial to me given that, over the last week or so, I've noticed my airtime bleeding off gradually by itself.  No open apps, no push notifications, 1 mail account fetching manually, location services off etc etc etc.

I've taken to switching my handset to Airplane Mode overnight just to stop this gradual erosion of my credit but am using both the DataMan and Data Usage apps and, so far today since switching off Airplane Mode, have apparently used 1Mb without surfing, checking emails or running any apps.

    This is pretty infuriating!

I have been following a similar thread on "ieverythingcafe" since my usage suddenly mushroomed for no discernible reason in March, 2011, and then skyrocketed in April, 2011.  One of the things that mystified me (beyond the fact that I had no data hogging apps, no video streaming etc.) was that the lifetime usage on my iphone continues to say 109mb after one year of use!  One tech told me that this was because data usage was reset to zero every time there was an update to the OS.  (Not true, by the way.  I checked on that myself.)  I finally got to a tech who gave me the work-around tip of turning off cellular data, unless I wanted to connect to the internet through 3g.  That did the trick.  I am attaching a picture of AT&T's report of my data usage for the past six months.  It shows my typical small usage for January and February, then the mushrooming in March and April (April was particularly significant in that I was out of the country for two weeks and had my iphone on "Airplane Mode" the whole time.  Then May and June show what happened after I turned cellular data off.  It sure is fishy.Data Usage Iphone past six months.jpg

Please elaborate with details---- what "work-around tip of turning off cellular data" did you use?

    thank you

I can't speak for mikalm but I go to: Settings >> General >> Network >> Cellular Data and toggle it to the "Off" position.

That has worked for me in preventing the gradual erosion of my airtime.

Okay-- Settings>>General>>Network>> and I have Data Roaming --- not Cellular Data and I keep my iPhone "Data Roaming" OFF

Do you have something different or a newer iPhone?

    Thank You!

A newer iPhone than what?  Do I have something different to what?

See my original post for which model iPhone I have.

There is no "Cellular Data Tab"--- I just want to clarify what your tab setting reads; does it read Cellular Data or Data Roaming?

    It reads (exactly as follows):

Settings >> General >> Network >> Cellular Data

When the "Cellular Data" toggle is in the "On" position, another menu appears beneath it on the same screen, giving me the option of toggling "Data Roaming" to the "On/Off" position.  When "Cellular Data" is off, this menu disappears.
