Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

I have installed Dataman on my 4S.  Should my cellular data usage on Dataman match the cellular usage within the iphone?  Maybe I will reset everything at the beginning of my billing cycle and see.  If Im not mistaken, ATT reports show HIGHER data usage than what the phone states in settings.

Has anyone tried restoring their iphone as new?  If I do a restore, would i be correct to follow these steps?

    1. BACKUP iphone to itunes

    2. SYNC contacts, notes, pics, etc with icloud

    3. RESTORE as NEW DEVICE

    4. RESYNC with icloud?

??  IS there a way to resync ONLY contacts with itunes?  (I hate syncing because it seems like something gets screwed up.  I ll end up having all my email addresses in my iphone contacts, or my wife will end up with some of my contact lol)

    Dear Scotwlcx:

    > Dataman usage reports should match your AT&T reports, with a variance of no more than ~5%, e.g. due to 'rounding up' on ATT's billed data transactions.  Make a copy of your Dataman and ATT website reports at the end of every billing cycle, to provide proof if you need to dispute some charges. (You can export Dataman reports to Excel via iTunes.)

    > Unfortunately, Apple forced Xvision to remove the previous version of Dataman Pro -- which reported the data used by each application.  This was invaluable to spot the 'data hogs' on your iPhone.  Your reports will only show totals by time and date.  This will still be helpful, however, e.g. to spot suspicious 'rollups' that hit your account around midnight.

    > I don't think wiping your iPhone will be helpful to resolve data usage problems, unless you loaded a bunch of apps and it will take more time to deinstall all of them.  First try the four key steps noted in my previous posts.  Two key apps that can consume a bunch of data: TextFree and Facebook.  (And anything that delivers 'updates' that include photos or video, e.g. social networking apps.)

Do you know why they pulled this application from itunes?  It was exactly what I was after .

Looks like they are working to restore it:

    Where's the Pro version?

Unfortunately, our Pro version has been removed by Apple from the App Store. We're working hard on bringing it back. Stay tune.

Meanwhile, you can use our DataMan app to help you stop overage charges. Thanks for your support.

Dear smcbr78218 - AKA Xvision support:

Would it help if everyone on this forum sent a message to Apple, begging for the return of the original Dataman Pro?

Dataman Pro (original version) is an outstanding and extremely valuable app, that saved our family hundreds of dollars.  I would be happy to write a testimonial for Apple.

    Thanks,

They've said this for over a month, when I first looked into it. I asked them about it at the time, and they said "hopeful by next week". Not so much.

I think Apple had dataman pro removed because it was too easy to see just HOW MUCH DATA iads uses. I for one was travelling recently internationally, and literally 50% of my data use was ads in apps.

Ok. I've had my cellular data turned off for 5 days now since I received the infamous text stating that I've used 65% of my 300 mb data plan.

I am going to do an experiment by turning on my cellular data before bed tonight. Dataman reads that I have used 0.00 data. AT&T says that I have used 238.53 mb so far this month. If I wake up tomorrow and any data has been used, the AT&T data system is completely rigged. I'll let you know how it goes

Wow, I've never thought about the ads within the apps using data. That's got me thinking, games that use game center must need/use data as well. Games where you don't think you are using data may be linked to game center. Is there any way to disable game center?

Here are my results when I woke up this morning (after turning on my data back on for the night)

    Dataman=19.2 mb (from 0)

    iphone    =19.2 mb (from 0)

att usage app= 238.53 (NO CHANGE)

So why is my iphone and dataman showing that i used data overnight while on wifi?  There were no midnight charges from att.

Well, obviously, you weren't on WiFi. Did you have the phone plugged in to power? WiFi shuts off when the phone is not connected to power and is on standby.

Yes--The phone was plugged in all night...even when I checked the data consumption.

So if the phone is always on 3G while sleeping and unplugged, if cellular data is turned off, does the phone revert to wifi when sleeping and unplugged?  Because I can receieve push notifications and imessages when cell data is turned off and phone is sleeping--so wifi must be on still during that time.

    Hi,

I had the same issues. I turned off all the setting that people suggested, but I still see high data usage. Strangely I observed that even when I am keeping my ipad on airplane mode for a complete a day with all applications closed also, I have seen the high data usage in the morning my time between 8-9 am(typically). The only way I could stop was turning off the iPad, which I do not want to do that.

I have 5gb plan, More than 50% of my data usage goes for these kinds of untracked Apps and leaves me little data for use. I thought apple is a safe device, apparantly it is not. Since I am seeing this happening when all the apps closed and airplane mode, I also suspect if apple gathering any data from the device.

Not sure how to get rid off this

    Thanks,

    Jagadish.

I just turned off the 'cellular data' and then let the phone go to sleep.  After a while, it shut down the wi-fi connection, as it was not plugged in.  My wife's iPhone is plugged in, and wi-fi is still connected after at least 3 hours.  Does that answer your question?

I continue to have the 'nocturnal transmissions' any time I forget to plug in the phone to the charger before going to bed.  While on a recent trip out of town, we were unable to get on the motel wi-fi, and my wife's phone used over half her 200 meg data budget in that one night, even though it was on the charger.  Gotta remember to turn cellular data off if wi-fi isn't available....
