Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

    mjmsbrown,

I have been studying this issue.

    A couple of questions...

At night when you reset your statistics, are any apps running on your iPhone... that is, do you shut-down all running apps before you re-set cell-data statistics?  I'm not trying to be rude - but, just to verify... do you know how to shut-down apps (double click the "Home button", etc.)?

I also use ATT.  When I look at my cell-data usage at:

    https://www.att.com/olam/displayUsageDetails.myworld?isWebTabInFocus=true&select edCtn=xxxxxxxxxx

the usage data is about 2 hours behind real time.  How many hours is your ATT detail data-usage behind real-time?

When you say "turning the phone off" are you putting the iPhone to sleep by briefly pushing the power-button or powering-off the iPhone by holding the power-button down for 5 seconds?

But, anyway... to answer your question... If the ATT detail cell-data usage report says your phone used 5040KB at 1:46am I would think you would have to see that on your iPhone cell-data usage screen.

Yes, about right, but it's MTSOs (switches), not individual towers that summarize the data usage. A switch controls many towers.

If I may make a modest proposal, rather than extending this 4 year old thread with over 2,000 posts, start a new post with your observations, so new viewers are more likely to see it without having to navigate over 140 pages.

I started a new thread on the topic here:

Interesting enough.... phone completely turned off for 3 days. Still high amounts of data showing in the am...... There is something that should really be done to stop all of the people from getting charged for data they never use.

Sorry this thread is older,  I'm at a loss as the data usage is out of control on our 4 phones.   Everything that can be shut off is,  no fetch,  no push, no auto updates etc…  Basically we have dumbed down our "smart" phones.

this is just a small sample of what every phone shows daily:

    cgema,

Have you looked at Settings, Cellular to see which apps are using cell data?

I have the same problem with usage but don't see the IMAP issue but will look more carefully now that you have mentioned it.  It is a real aggravation that the app is using so much memory.  In my case, it always reverts to 2.6 GB.  Seems that it should not even be more than 100 MB since the actual messages total less than 5 MB.
