Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

First time on these forums - just ordered an iphone 3gs and was concerned about all this talk. So I went back and looked at my data transfers for when I owned a Palm Pre Plus and had the exact same stuff going on with transfers up to 8mb around 1am. So it must not be the iphone but ATT that is doing it. I had that phone for 1 month and when they started they were smallish, but grew as the month went by. My usage habits had not changed and I did not download any apps that used data transfers.
I am watching this with interest.......

I'm having this exact problem now with my BlackBerry 9000. 40 minutes with ATT and all they could give me was "It's BlackBerry updates" which makes no sense.
Does anyone have any clues on what to do? I've turned off push - though it had been on for the previous 7 months when my data usage never topped 50 MB a month - and can't think of what else to do save delete apps left and right to try and get this under control!

    Help!!

I have had my push and fetch turned off since I've owned the phone,21 months. So I'm not sure that is making much diff.

This definitely confirms it's not just iPhone users, as someone said previously. This has GOT to be an AT&T thing, but strange how no one there can explain it. They've had to have 100s of questions/complaints but act so clueless - keyword there being "act".

However long this thread has been going, that's when I called ATT and spoke to someone very articulate and concerned. Naturally they had no idea what I was talking about but seemed very concerned and promised to call back as soon as she had information for me.

She did call back a day or two later. She said she had no news but it had been reported and she would keep in touch with me. This was someone who when I was on the phone with her checked her own phone's usage and gasped as she saw the same thing!!

    p.s. I haven't heard from her again.

Maybe everyone should agree on a date and make as many calls as possible to at@t complaining about this and demanding explanations? Though, with my past history with att, I don't think they will really care too much; customer satisfaction was never really a big drive for them. But then what big company really does care much anymore.......

I blew through my 2GB plan this cycle because of this phenomenon.

When I called AT&T Customer Support, a very nice woman by the name of Jay Jivan related to me she just had another caller with the same issue.

The 2nd level techs she spoke to were unable to provide an explanation other than it might have been an "app updates", which as we all know, don't happen without approval.

Because the cause of the remained a mystery, she was able to get authorization to put me back on the discontinued unlimited plan and remove the overages charge from my bill.

So give AT&T CS a call, be very polite, and you might just be given something that no longer exists

They must know something's up, don't you think? It's great that they did this for you. They've done this for many in this thread apparently without a fuss.

Yes, it says to me they know there is a problem, and they know it is their fault but they don't know how to fix it. As long as they don't charge me for extra data I am happy (as happy as I can be with att that is)

First one is from the FCC

OMG, that is infuriating!! But thanks for the address and a name for the OOTP!!

I haven't had time to file my complaint yet. I was waiting for resolution on the $4,000+ they charged me, which I finally got last week and they only took about $3,000 of it off. I had a very unpleasant exchange with a manager who had the same attitude and tone as that letter and decided I will have to submit the complaint to the FTC and also that I want to write to the OOTP about the situation and the manager's behavior.

I have found that even the BBC has published articles about the fact the O2 in Spain and the UK is aware that something is up and they have been refunding people who've been disputing and are looking into the issue that is obviously and issue with their network and the iPhone and how they interface. I'm guessing AT&T has a similar issue.

Meanwhile, I asked that manager to call O2 and confirm that they know about the problem (my charges happened while I was roaming in Spain with the carrier as O2) and he refused and said that unless and until they get some kind of notice through their department from corporate that says that there is a known problem, they won't do anything to troubleshoot it, and he went into his umpteeth spiel about how I HAD to have used 500MB data in 24 hours when my phone was asleep.

I am currently looking for how I can unlock my phone and switch to another carrier. Right now, for me, AT&T feels like a miserable marriage that I can't get out of because there's too many other contingencies!! lol

I don't know if this will be any consolation to all of us who are experiencing these obscene amount of data being sent with absolutely no explanation besides "it's not us" (not Apple, or at lease I haven't received this from Apple yet), but on my phone, I have disabled my 3G and Cellular Data. This has prevented any kind of internet or data sends unless I am on a wifi network. Since I work from home and have a network setup on my house, I don't have a need for 3G or Cellular data unless I leave the house. In these cases, I turn back on my 3G and Cellular data as needed to get what I need at that time (or find the nearest Starbucks).

Since I have turned these off on my phone, I have had no increases in the amount of data sent on my wireless plan. Yeah it isn't fun that I have to do this, but I'd rather limit my use manually than have another $15 magically appear on my phone statement each month because it was run over the limit by gremlin data.

Just in case anyone else can benefit from this as I have, you can turn each of these off by going to Settings > General > Network. There you will see both 3G and Cellular Data that you can switch to off.

It may be a little work around until there are enough complaints that someone looks into and strings up the appropriate party that is causing all this!

I have just noticed that in the past month my Iphone 4 has been doing the same early AM data dump as eveyone else on the forum and, long story short, found that an app i have called fuzzy car may be the culprit. I used the app one day last week and that next morning my usage show a dump at 1:23 am. this is not conclusive yet but it cast enough doubt back on the apps as the root problem to do further testing. i wll post later on what i find. does anyone else use this app???

    thanks!!

Clearly iOS needs a new feature. The ability to report data send/receive by application and not just the total aggregate amount.

Ooo, I like the suggest of a new feature to track usage by app - good one!!

I spoke yesterday w/a very knowledgeable computer expert and apple/iPhone supporter. He suggested clearing the data usage showing under Settings/General/Usage (at the bottom of that screen is Cell Network Data). Select Reset Statistics. He said it shows realtime data usage. I did this at 1pm yesterday, 9/16. I had a suspicion of a particular app I had been using more the last couple of months...Words w/Friends (free).

After I cleared my data to 0, I merely opened the app, closed it and went back to the data usage; it used 12K to send and 55K recv'd. Since this was a free app, and there are lots of ads, I wonder if those ads popping up all the time have any bearing on the usage???

Any of these apps that you can play w/other users is going to accum usage that you probably weren't expecting. I didn't even have to make a play in the game; just opened and closed it and got usage.

I also looked at the total data used from when I turned it off and today, comparing that to the dump made on my statement last night/early morn. The statement showed only about 6KB more than the phone is showing.

It doesn't matter if it's an app or apps causing it... the problem is in the network data logging and reporting. I am proof of that, as I was stuck for 500+MB data usage when O2 was the roaming partner and my phone usage was only 27MB. I did NOT use my phone!!! And I don't have tons of apps and garbage on it. That sort of stuff has been discussed over and over on this thread by tons of peeps.

We already know that Push and Fetch don't change anything. And of course turning Cellular Data off will stop any data transfers, but they will aggregate when you turn it back on and why the HECK should we have to basically turn our "smart phones" back into dumb phones because of this?

From what I can tell, it's GOT to be a programming issue in the interface between the phone and the carrier. And in the case of O2 they have some very different programming than AT&T that is resulting in MASSIVE data transfers running in the background.

And until the carrier will divulge what exactly this alleged data is, we, as consumers, are completely helpless to do anything about it except change carriers and possibly phones.
