Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

sounds like AT&T should be next in line, at FCC...

Wow. Well that just shows how important it is for everyone to file complaints on the FCC website so action is taken.

Note: I followed the first 40 or so pages of this thread and have the following data:

    * Very large data charges started appearing only after changing from unlimited to 200MB/mo plans

    * The rate of data usage appears to be between 4x and 10x several years of prior history

    * My first billing period just ended (about 1 week on the new plan) and I did not exceed the limit, but came close on both plans. Bills indicated that the data use was recorded on my account.

    * I am seeing these data charges on both iPhone 3G (still running iOS 3.x) and new iPhone 4

    * I have turned off the preference to send data to Apple (through iTunes) as noted by others for both phones

    * I have opted out of Apple marketing for iPhone 4 at http://oo.apple.com

    * I have set all applications to manual (no push, no fetch) on both phones

    * None of these remediations have changed the pattern of data usage reported

(Reuters) - Verizon Wireless in a statement Sunday said it will pay millions of dollars in refunds to 15 million cell phone customers who were erroneously charged for data sessions or Internet use.

I think the cat is out of the bag.

I heard on news this morning, this would result in a whopping $6-7/customer.

I guess it's not about the amount. It's about the principle. And the difference between the 200 MB and the 2 GB is only 10$.

read the statement which say some software initiated the exchanges, and the customer did not even had a internet plan.

"+The affected customers did not have data usage plans, which allow access to the Internet, and were charged because of exchanges initiated by software built into their phones, Verizon said.+"

    sounds eerily familiar ?!

If 6 or 7 bucks is all they overcharged you, that's all they should have to refund. Of course, with AT&T, the minimum overage fee is $15. And then it goes up in $15 increments.

Thanks, tomharrison. I just filed my own FCC complaint. I'm gathering my own detailed info on my own account's data overages, and will compile them into a nice report when I get time. I believe I have three different pieces of data that independently show ways that AT&T's billing is fraudulent, all using data from my own account.

    Cheers,
    Todd.

The situation with Verizon is a bit different. David Pogue initiated the issue in the NY Times several months ago, and his column resulted in a lot of FCC complaints. But the reason is that for Verizon Internet-enabled basic phones if you didn't have a data plan any time you used the Internet, including accidentally hitting the browser button ("pocket internet") you would be charged, and there was a minimum charge of $2.00 per access. AT&T has a similar policy, but the only charge is for actual data at about 2 cents per KB. My wife's LG phone occasionally shows 4 cent data charges due to "pocket Internet" data.

I am just making the point that large telecom companies can and do make LARGE billing errors when it involves billing for the use of data. I agree that it is a bit different. But the underlying cause is much similar.

The software used for tracking data usage and billing for Verizon is now shown to be innacurate. I beleive that in time AT&T's will be shown to be even more innacurate.

My iPhone says I've sent 36MB of data the whole time I've owned it. ATT says I sent 80MB of data yesterday. I don't send data. I send one text email a day, and a few SMS txts a day.

This is a real issue. It would be very helpful if those posters who feel they have to have an opinion about everything would stop trying to explain it away based on pure speculation and despite their total lack of facts or direct experience.

B Shore, you should (a) contact AT&T Wireless about the discrepancy and (b) file an FCC complaint using the URL shown above.

Yes, well thank you for the help. I did of course contact ATT and depending on their response will contact the FCC.

But that wasn't the point of the post. The point of the post was to dispel the idea that it's somehow possible that this could be real usage. Or the often-repeated but +completely uninformed+ comment that it's just a days worth of activity, totalled up and reported at one time.

Clearly, that is not the case. The one item highlighted is twice as much data as I've ever sent over the whole time I've had the phone.

Apple and ATT's response to this issue is appalling. I can't believe that, 3 months into this, we all have to waste our time trying to figure out what this is and resolving the billing issues with ATT. That's the real problem. Bugs and issues are part of developing the technology. But the way this has been handled is incomprehensible.

I agree clearly not real usage, and I think there's some reasonable consensus on that (though some keep coming back and repeatedly asking what data is sent, to whom) - however, I think that in many (if not most) cases it is some sort of aggregation.

Suggesting that aggregation is involved is NOT uninformed (otherwise, I would not have examples of browsing all day long with no data sends in my transcript, then one big 40MB "send" that night).

However, I'll agree with the sentiment that it's probably not only aggregation (for everyone) and/or given that it's supposed to be, there appears to be a major flaw in the algorithms (frequent discrepancy between the phone's recording of data and that which AT&T reports) and a total lack of transparency in the billing process itself..
