Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

So AT&T is telling users that "overhead" is the reason for the early morning data usage?

and the other out AT&T is using is: Many devices including iPhone transmit and receive data without user intervention

So their Terms of Service (ToS) gets them off the hook?

    I don't think so.

USERS with this issue---- continue to post your findings: how much data did you use vs. what you get billed.

The two issues: "Overhead data" charges are paid by you--- how much overhead is reasonable? and Many devices including iPhone transmit and receive data without user intervention---- this is seemingly going to be either or-- an Apple programming issue or and external environmental trigger causing data usage------ with the iPhone App---- DataMan - Monitor &
Geotag Your Data Usage. DataMan helps you to manage your data usage
in real time to prevent overage charges on your iPhone bill.

This useful app monitors your cellular and Wi-Fi data usage in the
background, keeping a log of your activities. What's more, it geotags
your data activities. So you can browse your daily data activities on
a map. You can even zoom in on the map to see the time and usage
amount for certain places. To help manage your data consumption, you'll receive real-time alerts
when you exceed your usage thresholds. There are 4 levels of alert
thresholds that you can customize to your needs to prevent additional
charges to your bill. Finally, it works with all carriers. There's no need to login to your
    carrier's website.

    KEY FEATURE:

DataMan allows you to set the billing start date to match your**
**billing cycle. It's under Settings in DataMan.**

Sorry to sound like an advertisement-- my iPhone won't work with app since it's 2G--- Please keep posting your findings. thanks to all.

I am on the 200 MB plan. After looking at my usage, which varies generally between 90 and 130 MB/month I made the switch to the much cheaper plan. All of a sudden in October I had LARGE uploads from my phone at 11 PM (Pacific) on sequential nights. First night: 19.9 MB. Second night: 24.4 MB. third night: 45.4 MB. Then during the day, while not using my phone: 69.3 MB. This of course put me over my 200 MB and I was charged for the overage. I have reset my phone as a new device and it appears that these mysterious uploads have stopped, but this is clearly NOT a "small" upload that we are not being charged for. It is a large upload that we did not initiate and are being charged for. I can't explain it, but it is a serious problem if you have to turn off cellular data except when you actually want to make a connection in order to prevent it from shipping vast amounts of data to who knows where without your knowledge or consent.

We should NOT be required to keep cellular data OFF, especially if we pay $15/$25 each month to have it ON.

Additionally, if you disable cellular data, following features won't work:
    - voicemail
    - MMS

These are not credited towards your data usage (as far as I can tell) but they do use cellular data to transfer information/messages/images.

Did the increase coincide with updating to 4.1 and Game Center, perhaps? Or did you update or install any apps that use data in background (such as streaming or social networking?

Hey there, its not just AT&T

    I am running T-Mobile on a Factory-Official-Unlocked IP4...using TMO Edge Data.

In the middle of night--every 2 hours, like 1:06, 3:06, 5:06, 7:06 am, I will get a data transer of like .0019 MB....

I have no idea what data its transfering. Everything is off: Notifications; Fetch Data; Location Services; all apps, even the ones in multi-tasking pane.

    What gives?

Atleast now, y'all know culprit cant be AT&T. Must be apple.

    GOOD NEWS!!!!!

I did the "reset warnings" in iTunes posted by B Shore on Oct 12. This may be a complete coincidence but, it has worked!!! I did this on that day and have not had a data dump since 2:32pm on Oct 12...no 2am dumps on EITHER the 13th OR the 14th, nothing posted on my acct yet for the 15th.......can this be the fix?!!! It has to have done something because I have had the am dumps EVERYday 'til doing this. See below..

    1) Connect phone to iTunes
    2) when phone appears in left margin, right click on phone for drop down menu and click on "Reset Warnings".
    3) disconnect phone
    4) close iTunes (I didn't do this at first and didn't get the Agree, Disagree option)
    5) reconnect phone - iTunes reopens
    6) when you get the box asking for permission to send info to be Apple, click "disagree."

I'm so anxious to see if anyone else has the same experience I did and if mine continues to not dump data at 2am!!!!

I'd advise when your next AT&T bill is available--- then login to your AT&T account and view the data usage and complete bill---- LOOK for the noted early morning OUTGOING data----

    Nothing posted to your account?

*3282# then press CALL be interesting if you are using NO Data--- but I think you should see your next bill to verify from the date you posted----- I believe another poster already tried this--- I did and am waiting for next bill cycle.

This thread has gotten so long that it's unlikely that anyone reads it anymore, but a lot of people have posted that they tried resetting the warnings, and a couple have said it helped, but the majority said it didn't make any difference. According to Apple the data collected is downloaded when you sync, not over the air, so if that is correct it should not make any difference. I reset mine a couple of months ago and I still get the nightly downloads.

I'm only saying, I used to see daily data dumps on my online account and now I am seeing none. Previously, I had said nothing was showing for the 15th; however, today the 15th shows no data dumps, either. I don't know the reason...does it have anything to do w/resetting my warnings? Can't say, but they aren't there.
