Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

ToddBradley, I've read most pages (although I'll admit not the entire 57 pages) and I've seen a lot of people with similar issues as mine. However, I haven't see anyone else who has a gap 10 times off which is typically what mine is.

I find it funny that using AT&T's data calculator tool says the 2 GB plan should allow you to view 3200 web pages per month among many other things. However, I would allegedly blow through my entire 2 GB by loading only about 50.

    Something is seriously wrong.

BulaRae, someone in a different forum suggested I try to get AT&T to provide me with a different sim card. Do you think that would help us at all and do you think AT&T would even do that?

Sorry, Ryan, I have no idea. I took my phone to the Apple Store months ago and it checked out fine and the tech used to work for AT&T so was really intrigued by the issue but he was baffled.

I don't know enough about the technical stuff, but having observed this thread for months now and knowing the experience I've had and my very limited overall data usage, I really believe it's some sort of bizarre programming glitch in the biling/tracking system whereby something (what?) triggers a sudden "tracking" of phantom data that is really something the phone is using internally or who knows what. Cuz it's inconsistent and so extreme.

Like so many others, I don't have a lot of third-party apps (just AT&T, Trip Advisor and a hotel program app), I don't download music, videos or stream anything, etc. I only Update apps via my laptop. I don't check my email on my phone nor text.

It's really a mystery. And a very frustrating one, at that!!

This is why every single person in the US experiencing this problem should file a complaint with the FCC.

Be as detailed as possible when filing. Give exact quantities, dates and times and places in your bill and on your phone where those quantities can be found. E.g. Settings->General->Usage->Cellular Data Network, and "line xyz of my bill as of date abc".

I just filed an FCC complaint. Yesterday, my husband allegedly used 150 mg of data after 12:30 am. Problem is, he was not even on the phone at the time. Looking at our bill, I see a bunch of smaller charges all occurring in the wee hours of the morning. He reset the data usage on his phone at the start of our billing cycle 10 days ago. According to the phone, he's only used 98 mg of data. According to AT&T, he's used 300. After lots of discussion with an AT&T rep, including a call back after she checked with Apple Care, she could not offer any explanation and simply told me to keep the cellular data turned off. It's ridiculous to have to jump through these hoops in order to avoid running up a huge tab. What a crock!

Just wanted to say that i live in Norway and I do not have AT&T. I am on a Norwegian carrier and experience the exact same problems.

We have two 3g phones. One phone would have data usage every hour on the hour. Fetch email. Setting is to check every hour. The other phone, (mine) is 100% default settings and nothing synchronized thru iTunes. In other words it is only used as a telephone. There is nothing on the phone, no contacts, calendar, photos, etc., it is not signed into the iTunes store. Both 3G phones are running the latest iOS. This phone never has any data usage at any time. That being said, data usage will occur when you get voice mail and check the voice mail, but usually it is minimal 1-5kb. You probably need to remember that you have a very small computer that is always doing something if your usage is anything but as a telephone. Think about it for a minute, a router is always checking a time sever as is your computer. Your computer is always checking for updates, etc. If you purchased a smartphone for all the capabilities it has to offer and you use them, you will have a lot of data usage.

Neither of these are good examples. Your iPhone is not always checking for updates - the OS only gets updated via iTunes and apps get updated via the App Store application. The phone doesn't use time servers. It gets time information via the GSM network (for instance, if you have data disabled and you move across time zones, your phone will update automatically).

"Houston - we have a problem."

The iPhone data charges for over billing of unknown data usage is occurring in the USA, Canada, UK and wherever you may be with a Norwegian Carrier---

I suspect that the iPhone software behavior is the culprit in part: do folks have their iPhones synched up with their DOT MAC accounts? Why does the "hourglass" spin and spin even after email or web pages are loaded? Is there a security breach with APPLE and Carriers? Is the data collection/billing defective?

The only way to quash these and the many questions and theories in this thread is for APPLE and it's partners to pony up.

I encourage EVERYONE to keep posting and to file an online complaint with the FCC for those in the USA.

I agree with your observations, except that it isn't clear that it is a problem in the phone. Remember that most cellular carriers do not write their own network management or billing software; they buy it from a small number of vendors. So it could still be a system problem in one of the vendor's products.

I agree completely that the only real answer is for Apple and the carriers to explain what is happening.

Lawrence, I think you might have missed the point I was trying to make. I for one do not believe that there is anything going on either with the phone or the carriers. Regardless of the outcome, very few are going to believe what Apple, AT&T or any other large corporation or the government says. I think the real issue here is that as users we do not fully understand what things take place as long as the appliance is on. This is probably true for most electronic devices today that never really are turned off unless you disconnect them from their respective power supply.

When you say "the exact same problems", are you getting unexplained data usage that actually registers on the phone's counter, or are you seeing a large discrepancy between your bill and the phone's counter? I would suggest that these are two different issues that are being conflated.
