Q: Unknown data usage early morning

With the changes to the data plans, i decided to look at my wifes data usage on her iphone. What i have found is odd and a bit concerning. Overall her data usage is pretty much nothing, except for something that occurs every morning around 1 or 2 am. I have included data usage on the AT&T account below. As you can see, something happens around 1 or 2 am every morning, i just dont know what it is. The amount of data being transferred is REALLY high if you ask me, as high as 75336KB back on the 17th. I called AT&T support and they said it was the phone updating or mail being downloaded, basically they have no idea. I have the mail set to fetch manually already. Anyway to determine what is going on???

    Backpacker,

I took your advice a couple weeks ago and filed a complaint with the FCC. After filing, I received a number to track the complaint. I haven't heard anything from the FCC and I can't figure out how to check the status of the complaint.

Do you know how it all works?

The web portal was intended to streamline the busy paperwork process that led the FCC to bottlenecks investigating backlogged complaints.

The FCC Common Carrier Bureau may be the voice contact to follow up on your complaint--- 202-418-0569 and have your complaint Reference Number handy when you call. You may want to wait 30 calendar days before calling.

If you get stumped or put into voice mail hades or some circular phone game then email the FCC Commissioners and let them know including why you are following up:

To Contact the Commissioners via E-mail
    Chairman Julius Genachowski: Julius.Genachowski@fcc.gov
    Commissioner Michael J. Copps: Michael.Copps@fcc.gov
    Commissioner Robert McDowell: Robert.McDowell@fcc.gov
    Commissioner Mignon Clyburn: Mignon.Clyburn@fcc.gov
    Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker: Meredith.Baker@fcc.gov

The old webpage that had the procedure for consumers is gone or buried in the FCC site-- there is an online group that copied it and placed it online--- I believe the carriers have 30 days to respond--that was the old criteria. They are busy as you can imagine with consumer complaints. IF the complaint isn't addressed to your satisfaction then again, I urge you and anyone to write to the commissioners at the above email addresses.

----AT&T Online Reporting Data Usage Notice----

*Important Information:* There are delays in reporting and processing data records. It may take up to two to five days for airtime usage on the AT&T wireless network to show up in any Data "Used" category. Additional delays may occur due to technical difficulties. Further delays may apply to roaming usage, which is based on usage records received from other carriers. A delay of a minimum of two to ten days for roaming usage is usual and up to 60 days or longer is possible. During the time your invoice is being processed, you may not be able to view your usage or you may experience additional delays in reporting of usage. This usage information is only an estimate and, regardless of what is shown, your next invoice will be determined by the information contained in our billing system, not this usage information. Hawaii Text/Data Users: The time stamp for your unbilled data usage may be off by up to 4 hours.

This is just an FYI about the notice found--- login to your AT&T wireless account and pull up "Usage and recent activity" for data

Repeatedly I have directed the AT&T CSRs to look at this 63 page thread but they would rather keep their corporate head in the sand. Of course they treat their customers as having nothing but time on their hands to deal with AT&T and we all must be stupid because we don't know what we're doing with our phones. I keep asking them to look at data history and explain why our data has more than doubled from previous months. Here's an AT&T response to our last e mail thread - where they deny any correlation between the phone's usage statistics and their own.

<<Please keep in mind that not all data usage on the phone's data usage tracker is billed as part of the 200 MB, such as data usage from multimedia messages or the pre-installed instant messaging application. Comparing what the phone says with what is billed out of the 200 MB may not be very accurate at all. I recommend keeping track of when email, the Internet, and apps that use and bill the data out of the 200 MB (like Navigator) is used over the course of the week. Then, after the bill that covers that week has posted to your online account, you can look at the data detail to see how much data was used during the various times. I recommend doing this on the last week of the billing cycle, 11/30 - 12/06, so that the times of use are fresh in the user's minds. That way if there is data usage unaccounted for, they will be more likely to remember if they were using the phone and/or what they were doing at the time of the unaccounted usage. It is possible they are using something on the phone that bills for data and do not realize it.>>

This is a lame response and not a rational course of action for users to follow. CSRs get you on the phone and get you off - this CSR's course of action is lame. It's akin to saying I want you to be able to tell me what the last 100 phone calls were on your cell phone during the last 4 days of the billing cycle.

LISTENING 101 is missing from that Call Center's skill sets.

Many in this thread have stated that the key issue is whether or not data usage recorded by the iPhone itself matches that claimed by AT&T. I agree. I reset the Settings/General/Usage on the first day of my billing period (which oddly turned out to be the second day, as someone else noted here). Below are comparisons of these totals, what's reported by the app, DataMan and what AT&T says I've used for the first 13 days of my billing cycle.

    iPhone4
    Data Man 21,819 KB
    iOS Usage 22,900 KB
    AT&T 40,373 KB

    iPhone3Gs
    Data Man 29,210 KB
    iOS Usage 25,300 KB
    AT&T 35,032 KB

DataMan and the iOS Usage match up pretty well, but AT&T is quite a bit higher. I took the time to compare the daily totals from AT&T with the daily totals from DataMan and there is no correlation at all. At this rate neither of us will exceed our 200 MB, but clearly there is a significant discrepancy.

AT&T said I used over 100 MB of data ON THE FIRST DAY of my billing cycle and all I did was browse a few web pages for a total of about 5 minutes.

Maybe we can use DataMan app to verify ATT's records. The latest Dataman version 3.0 is able to show me my data usage every 10 minutes. I can see my data activities throughout the night from 1am to 7am. I noticed that 3G is used together with wifi. Anybody else has this?

This may sound strange, as I am only 16 years old.
My mom just asked me why my phone had HUGE data transfers at 3am on a school night, and I had honestly no idea.
She then proceeded to accuse me of streaming LIVE **** from my bedroom every night. Seriously!
AT&T has officially ruined my good image in front of my mother because they cannot keep the **** together.

That's hilarious! Tell her that you're just a curious, healthy 16-year old man.

Hi everyone - I just created an account to join in on this conversation, but I've been following this thread for a while. I have been dealing with the same issue for the past few months, although luckily (?) my overage charges aren't as drastic as some of the ones I'm reading about here. I've been on the phone with AT&T and Apple every month for the past three, and even though no one can resolve this problem for me, I do get AT&T to give me some sort of credit each billing cycle. It's just infuriating that it's on me to call back each month and argue about it.

I won't detail my entire experience with this -- I've already vented to friends enough times. I did want to share one thing I learned yesterday (apologies if someone has already said this and I missed it). What I've found to be the best course of action is to call Apple first, get to the 2nd level of support, and have them call AT&T for you. Seems like you can't get to that level of AT&T support except from the Apple side.

I finally got a girl from Apple and a guy from AT&T who had both heard of this problem before. AT&T engineering is aware of it, working on it, and don't understand why it's only affecting certain customers and not all. And while I can't contact that particular AT&T guy again, the Apple 2nd level support people give you their direct extension, so next month I don't have to start from scratch when this invariably happens again.

What I'm most frustrated about now (in a quantitative sense): I reset my phone usage statistics on Oct 3, 2010. Since then? I've sent 15.0 MB and received 74.4 MB.

For my billing cycle from Oct 11 - Nov 10, AT&T billing says I used ~210 MB.

Like I said, not as drastic as what others are reporting in this thread, but no one can give me a straight answer about why they don't match? Are you kidding?

Called AT&T again tonight after I saw a charge of 48 MB on the 19th when my phone only recorded 3.5 MB. I spent over an hour on the phone talking to a customer service guy and a technical guy completely wasting my time until they finally put me in touch with a manager. I have barely been using my phone to avoid huge data charges so I've only used 188 MB of data on my 2 GB plan so far (my billing cycle ends Dec. 12th). The manager said they want me to be able to use the phone without worrying about overages and that the 2 GB should be more than enough data. He set up a call back on December 15th (after the billing cycle ends and is processed) and told me to use the phone the way I want to until then. He said at that time we would take a look at the data usage and determine if we need to dig deeper into potential incorrect billing. It sounds like I have about a 2 week "get out of jail free" card in terms of data usage. He also gave me his full name and the direct number I can reach him at in case I need to speak to him again.

It's going to be very interesting to see what my data usage patterns look like now that I'm free to use the phone as I please for a couple weeks. I can only hope this is finally a step in the right direction in getting these absurd data charges corrected.

This is a classic response to delay and postpone a dissatisfied customer. It's a trap, and you fell right into it.

Here is the (real) problem, both yours and AT&Ts: your phone recording only 3.5 MB of data transfer, while AT&T claims 13 times more at 48 MB.

However, it is beneficial only to AT&T, not you, as you're getting charged money by AT&T.

The AT&T manager was able to mitigate your current psychological state (disdain, complaint, unsatisfied) with the service and billing to about a month in the future, where you're most likely going to be less riled up about it. This is a *classic tactic* employed by many service outlets.

It is similar to being put on hold when you're complaining about something, right in the middle of your sentence. Chances are when they put you back on the line, you'll be less emotional.

Prediction: when your billing cycle is over and you get a call (if you get a call) back from AT&T, and if you're less than your 2 GB limit, no harm done and no one will look into why your phone said 13 times less than what AT&T charged you, as it is absolved in your 2 GB plan. And herein lies the problem: some customers are on the 250 MB plan and here is where AT&T make their money of overcharging. If, OTOH, you're over the 2 GB plan, they'll give you $15 credit to satisfy and please you, or as they say internally to "shut you up". And $15 to a single customer is NOTHING compared to whey they'd have to pay if it is found they've been overcharging customers.

Either way, they win if customers take the bait as you did.

Customers should demand resolution *right here, right now*, since they charge you money in a *right here, right now*-fashion, you're entitled to service *right here, right now*.

I'd suggest you file a complaint with the FCC. The way to do it has been outlined several times in recent posts.

    FYI--

I filed an online FCC complaint on 11/3/2010 and yesterday 11/22/2010 received a letter from the FCC affirming the complaint and the details. The 30-day timer probably started yesterday for the carrier to respond or within so many days of AT&T getting my complaint forwarded to them from the FCC.
