Using a .dot template in pages

Hi,

I have to write an article and the template for it comes as .dot file. When it try to open it in pages, it's all messed up. Is there a way to open such files in pages while retaining the original template layout?

Thanks.

Welcome to Apple Discussions

First, I have found that I need to change the extension from .dot to .doc for Pages to open the files. But that may not solve the problems you are having. There are many features of Word or Pages that are not supported by the other & you'll not get the results you want. My guess is the template you're using has unsupported formatting. I suggest trying NeoOffice or Open Office to see if you get a better result.

Hi elbiliscibus

Welcome to the forum. 🙂

"…all messed up." doesn't tell us anything.

It's in Hebrew, all the letters have been rearranged randomly and colored with tartan, all the dates have switched to the Julian calendar, all references to the first person are now in 3rd person plural…?

To elicit a useful response it helps to detail what has happened, there may be fixes but we haven't got a clue what needs fixing.

Thanks for the answers and sorry for the imprecision.
So what happens when I open the dot, I get the following warnings:

- Text frames aren't supported and were converted to text boxes.
- An unsupported field wasn't imported
- Paragraph borders behave differently in pages. All borders except complete outside borders were removed

So some of the layout is fine (fonts are ok and text is still 2 columns) but fields for authors and title are missing, header on first page is gone but not on the following pages and page numbers now shows two page 1.

I have also tried converting to a doc and get the same result.

Hope this is better explained this time 🙂

Otherwise, I've had a quick look with open office and it seems to be working fine so I might have to use it though I'd be a lot happier if I could stick with pages!

Can't see what happened as a result but in principle that shouldn't effect the text.

Can't tell what that might have been, but Word has things like optional/auto-inserted text or forms entry which Pages does not.

Pages has less options for where the borders can fall but better options for fancy frames etc.

Someone here said the problem with OpenOffice, which I was going to suggest next, is that it is both not Word and too much like Word.
