Change brightness on 24 inch LED cinema display?

I recently bought the 24 inch LED cinema display and have found the screen to be a little bright during the evening
It's connected to my macbook pro which is currently shut and off to the side but the F1 and F2 keys on my keyboard do nothing and there's no brightness slider in the system preferences.
I called Apple support but they put me on hold to do 'research' for about ten minutes before asking me if the monitor was connected then said that some of them can't be dimmed.

Is that true? It seems a little strange for Apple to not allow you dim a monitor

Mac OS X (10.6.3)

I too have the same issue, also to note;
- USB is plugged in.
- Displays built in camera works (and is listed in System profiler under USB)
- Displays Audio doesn't work. (and is not listed in System profiler under USB)
- Displays brightness adjustment not available (and display not listed in System profiler under USB)
- Display USB ports do work.
- Firmware is up to date.
