Places assigns photos to wrong locations, won't change them

Hey there everyone,

Places in iPhoto (newest version) will not let me change wrong locations. I can re-enter the info, but it will fail to update the map with them. For example, the photos of my London trip in April, will first of all be assigned to weird locations. I get photos of the Houses of Parliament by clicking on the pin of Buckingham Palace. When I re-enter the correct location, the photos will still be there.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you in advance.

If you click on the information button on one of these photos, does the mini-map on the back of the picture show the correct location?

Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer:
~/Library/Caches
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iphoto (There may be more than one of these files. Remove them all.)

Test iPhoto.

If the issue persists follow iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library and use the "Rebuild iPhoto Library database..." option.

Ok so its ONLY the main places Map that shows these images in the wrong place then.

In that case try this test.

- Import an image from /Library/Desktop Pictures
- Flip that picture and add a location to it (preferably a location you have not used yet so that it will be easy to see on the main map)
- Check the Map to see if it shows up

If it does work:
Something is going on with these specific pictures and / or their reference within the iPhoto Library database. Consider exporting, deleting and re-importing them. When you export you can check the check box for "include location information" so that it preserves the locations you have already added.

If it does not work:
Something may be wrong with your iPhoto Library.
To test:
- Close iPhoto
- Hold down option key and launch iPhoto
- Create new library
- Import a picture from /Library/Desktop Pictures
- Add a place and then check the map

If the issue persists with a new iPhoto library, create a new user, Creating a new user account and test there.

So you made a new user account, added in a desktop picture from /Library/Desktop Pictures, added a place to it, and when you looked at the Map by clicking on "Places" on the left hand side of iPhoto, the pin for that picture was not in the proper location?

I'd be curious to know where it does put it. For example if you set the location of a picture to San Francisco, CA, and then look at the Map, where does it put the pin?

If that is the issue we are having I would suggest the following:
Make sure you are up to date:
Mac OS X 10.6.3
iPhoto 8.1.2
Make sure your Region is set to your localized country. So for example I choose "United States".
-- Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Language & Text > Formats > Region > (whatever your region is.)

If the same thing keeps happening follow http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3249 to reinstall iPhoto and run all your software updates.

If it STILL has the same issue, could you please share a screen shot of what the Map looks like. (How to do a screen shot: http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/screenshots.html)

After reinstalling iPhoto, it just simply still won't work. It mixes locations, pins containing some correct pictures and incorrect ones. The pin of the first incorrect pictures however contains those pictures aswell that were first correct and now are incorrect. What on earth is going on?

Thank you for you all contributing.

Ok so if you can put locations on several other pictures and it works but it does not work with this specific set of images (from London) then something is wrong with these pictures, its not an issue with the iPhoto program itself.

This could be bad EXIF data on the images. Hard to say.

Try taking a few of the images in questions out of iPhoto to the desktop. Open them up in Preview by double-clicking. Go to File > Save As and save them as TIFF. Re-add these images to iPhoto and test them on the Map again.
