I'm assuming that the preorder for the iPhone 4 will work the same way as other preorders have, for the 3GS, the 3G, etc. Do you have to pay the entire sum when you preorder it, a portion of it, or is it just like a reserve?
Thank you for clearing this up for me!

Full payment required when ordered. Not sure if this is charged to a credit card on that day or when the product ships but in this case if pre-ordered on the 15th, this amounts to a week or so from the order date until the ship date.
So I have the 3G right now, and will be eligible for the upgrade. How does that work if I pre-order from Apple? Do I pay the full amount and get a refund when I renew the contract?
If you are eligible for AT&T's upgrade or discounted pricing, you will be charged AT&T's upgrade or discounted price. You will need to enter your existing cell phone number with area code when ordering and before being charged, which Apple will check with AT&T's records to confirm you are eligible for AT&T's upgrade or discounted pricing , as Apple does and must to do now when purchasing an iPhone at an Apple store, and the same with Best Buy when purchasing an iPhone at a Best Buy store.
It is delivered on the 24th, or should be unless there is a minor shipping delay for whatever reason, or the package is lost in transit, which happens with the best of them from time to time with Fed-Ex and UPS or insert any carrier's name. The plan and goal will be to deliver on the 24th and unless something unusual happens, that should be the case.
Thanks Allan! That's all very helpful. How does activation work since it gets shipped? Do I still need to take it in to an AT&T store? Or can I plug it into iTunes, like I had to do with the 3G when it first came out. And will it automatically de-activate my old phone?
If the pre-order is shipped to your door - not to an AT&T or Apple store, you will active the iPhone with AT&T via the iTunes activation process just as you did with your 3G. When the iPhone 4 is activated, your 3G will be deactivated automatically at that time.
Great news! I will definitely have to pre-order this bad boy. I always get so giddy when iPhone news drops. This is definitely worth the wait from not updating to the 3GS.
My iPhone 3G will be two years old this July and although it still works fine, I'm looking forward to a much faster processor and double the RAM over the 3G. That along with all the other improvements, I plan on pre-ordering one myself on the 15th.
You can use the 3G as an iPod Touch - there is no device limit for the number of iPods, iPhones, and iPads that can be synced with the same iTunes library and iTunes account on the same computer.
The iPhone 4 will use a micro-SIM card - just as with the iPad. Keep the no longer activated SIM card with your 3G inserted in the 3G even after the iPhone is no longer activated. In order to install a firmware update on a no longer activated iPhone or restore a no longer activated iPhone with iTunes if wanted or needed, the no longer activated SIM card needs to be inserted in the iPhone - the SIM card that was used with the iPhone when it was activated.
You can enable Airplane mode followed by turning on wi-fi access when internet access is required.
It shouldn't make much if any difference, but I would remove the no longer activated SIM card when selling the iPhone. Whoever purchases the iPhone will need to get a new SIM card for the iPhone if they plan on activating it.
