Facetime on iPhone 3gs?

So I watched Steve's presentation today and he mentioned that they will release the 4.0 update on June 22nd. I wanted to know if facetime is included in that update for 3gs since on his slide show only the iPhone 3g had a * saying that all functionality is not supported. After all, iPhone 3gs does support video. Does anyone know anything ?

Ok if they are greedy then explain just how you are going to use facetime on an iphone 3gs without the front facing camera? It won't work because the app was designed for the iphone 4 not the 3gs. Also that would be like trying to put the SMS app on an ipod touch. The touch has no phone capability so how would it text? There are apps designed for specific hardware and this happens to be one of them.

I know it uses both cameras but they would have to recode to work with just one on the older iphones. Again why do that when it defeats the purpose of video chatting. Either you would have to look at the back of your phone while you chat with someone or they see a wall or other object while you watch them. Not a great way to video chat so why do it for the older iphones?

guess you are not thinking logically.... Not sure why it's hard for you to understand that Apple is forcing users to upgrade.... Facetime should ahve been there for 3gs users(atleast for video chat via the back camera). I and a developer myself and can tell you that this could have been done easily but the feature was left out intentionally for 3gs users

Perhaps I'm missing something here...but HOW ON EARTH CAN YOU USE A VIDEO CONFERENCING APP WITHOUT A FRONT-FACING CAMERA?

Oh, I know, I'll just talk to the back of the camera, where I won't be able to see the other caller.

Or perhaps, Apple will release an iMirror, that you hold in front of your 3GS whilst you talk to the back of it, so you can see the other person!

I think it's pretty clear why Facetime will only be available on the iPhone 4!

Pretty simple. If I had an Iphone 4 (which will probably happen) and Facetime worked on Iphone 3G, my 1 year old daughter would be able to see me when I call my wife on her 3G, and I think she'd love it.
Anyway, as Steve said a couple of years ago, nobody wants video chat on a phone...Now we have video chat, but not compatible with standard 3G video call, nor with any older iphone, plus it needs wifi. Completely useless, for the moment at least. Just hope we'll have some decent video conferencing app over 3G and compatible with the standards : 3G, MSN, iChat (Common Apple, how could you make an ichat video for iphone, not compatible with ichat video)

No, you're not thinking logically. Apple is not forcing you to do anything. Apple made a decision on how their feature worked with their phone. Don't like it?... tell Apple ( http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html) and/or buy another phone.
