Q: Wi-Fi Connected, but no internet access

Able to see/authenticate and connect to network at work which is using WPA-PSK. iPad shows connected/steady connection and has been assigned IP address. However, unable to connect to Internet, acts like not actually connected to internet. Tried my iPhone and it exhibits the same issue.

Saw a few like issues posted here, but indicated fixes did not work, i.e., reboot router and iPad.

Thanks

Kris

No problem, lets try this. it must be a DHCP problem.

    1. Open "Network Preferences"

    2. Click on "Assist me..."

    3. Click on "Assistant..."

    4. Select "Ethernet" and click on "continue"

afterwards make sure you have a network diagnostic report like the image below:

    network2.jpg

finally quit your browser and restart your browser and try browsing...

I don't exactly know how to include images to this reply else it would be much easier to show you. Ok so, the result returned with "You cannot connect to your Ethernet network automatically, so you need to enter information to set up connection. If you don't know this information, please contact your network administrator". It asked me to enter IP address, Subnet Mask, Router Address and DNS Host. I tried inputting the figure that I told you earlier and clicked Continue to which I get a reply "The IP address and the router address are nt consistent with the subnet mask you entered".

I'm sorry I left out this piece of info. Yes I do have a wireless router and in fact, this problem arises when I tried setting up the router. I followed basic instructions that came with the router and it was connected but I couldn't browse. Next thing I know, I couldn't even browse using Ethernet connection.

    I'm sorry I'm such a pain.

    1. To add images you'll need a screen capture software. on mac it's called "Grab", check your applications folder should be there...

    2. To add images in the forum windows just click the "insert image" button (the camera on the text editor bar)

no problem lets just reset the network confuguration settings and see if it will automatically reset the network configuration to factory settings...

    1. Open Finder...

    2. Press "cmd+shift+G" - a search dialog should pop up

    3. copy and paste this in without the quotes " /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist " and click "Go"

    4. Add .bak to the preferences.plist - should be like this:- preferences.plist.bak. Accept to save the file with the .bak extension.

    5. Restart your computer and wait for everything to load properly, then try browsing.....

Get back to me with your results....if it doesn't work we will try another method...

Don't worry we will sort it out....

I'm using my iPhone to reply, ergo I can't include images.

Anyway, I tried the cmd+shift+G and inputting the string that you told me to but I was stopped saying I don't have the permission to view the content. So based on what you taught me previously, I tried logging on as a root user in Terminal but to no avail. It says my login was incorrect. Wot's next ?

Thank you for your patience. Hope it won't run thin lol.

Ok I keyed my password and verified it. And tried logging in as root user in terminal by entering my login and my password that I entered when I enabled root user. The result returned with "~" followed by my laptop's username and "$". Correct me if it wasn't supposed to be like that. And then I returned to pressing cmd+shift+G and entering the strings "/library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist" without the quote but it still returned with "..you don't have permission to see the contents". Am I doing it wrongly ?

Anyway I tried keying in http://192.168.1.1 in my browser previously and checked for the modem's log and two things keep repeating: "timeout waiting for PADO packets" and "Unable to complete PPPoE discovery" . Just thought you might want to know.
