In a word, no.
No data can be stored on the SIM card. With phones that support storing contacts on the SIM card, it is limited to a name and a couple of phone numbers and maybe a single email address for each contact.
The SIM is definitely not a storage card unlike a MicroSD card, but it can store various things. Normally (for phones) this is as you said limited to a name and number, however I use my phone (iPhone!) SIM in my Blaupunkt car radio and it stores all my radio station presets and my default volume level. So not only can (a little bit) of stuff be stored but these can be from more than one application.
Note: the Blaupunkt I use is also a fully handsfree in car phone system as well as a radio. It predates Bluetooth so it is a 'real' GSM phone in its own right.
I am disappointed that Apple have switched to a micro SIM as this will make it much more difficult to use the SIM in my car system. I could get a micro to mini SIM adapter, but the Blaupunkt already uses a mini to 'fullsize' SIM adapter (the size of a credit card). Two adapters inside each other is asking for trouble.
I have been looking at replacing it with a Bluetooth head unit, but none of these seem to have the option of adding a steering wheel mounted remote control like I currently have for my Blaupunkt. Not even the current Blaupunkt Bluetooth models have such a remote.
If your interested you can see a (Hungarian!) brochure for the Blaupunkt Amsterdam TCM127 (long discontinued) on this page
