After installing, Safari 5 wouldn't load anything without hanging. I cleared the cache and it is a lot better. Still, about one out of every four pages hangs so long that I get a timed out message. What's going on?
I have no plug-ins, add-ons, or other extras except for ClickToFlash for blocking Flash content. Any ideas?
By the way, I do think the new Reader function is impressive. That, at least, is looking good.
I've been having the same S5 problems. AT&T even sent me a new 2wire! But as soon as it was up and running, the problems began. After alot of reading I now know what DNS is and I added the open servers(thanks mharding). Everything is working well so far. Apple needs to fix this!

I fully feel your pain. I have groups of sites open automatically, and in Safari 4.x all was wonderful. Every since Safari I cannot go through a session without having the browser time out. Hopefully as I read through this I'll find a solution. When I do find one I'll come back and post.
Well I've had Safari get back to normal on a short term basis by clearing cache, cookies, killing extensions, trashing a host of plug-ins; only to exhibit the same slow page loading after a couple of hours. Other browsers work fine, so I am done until Apple issues a fix, if that ever occurs.
Google Chrome is far faster and more reliable at the moment, but I'll be back as soon as Safari is working properly. Can't afford any more troubleshooting time.
I am having the same problems as everyone else regarding Safari. When will Apple fix this problem?? It's not an isolated problem, everyone has it.
Fix the problem for God's sake!!!
By the way. I could almost always get Safari to finish downloading the page by clicking stop then reload in the URL box. The speed would be fine, but only after stopping and starting.
this is the first time i've checked the message boards about this problem but since I installed Safari 5 I've come to absolutely HATE my mac. Anytime i go to sites like youtube, istockphoto.com, msnbc.com etc. I get the spinning beachball and "not responding" so I have to force quit. If I clear my cache and cookies I can view one video, then it will hang on the second video every time.
I never in my life thought I would say this since I make my living in photography, but I'm done with Apple, for real.
I just spent another $900 for a third logic board and superdrive on the same machine. This is my 8th mac and everyone has cost me at least 3x the original cost in repairs, and now they can't even develop a stable browser.
To me, Apple is no longer in the computer business, they are in the smartphone business. They are a phone company. They have given up on their pro apps and and the mac line of computers. I never thought I would hear myself say this, but... in my opinion Apple and Macs suck now. Suck hard. Going to PC.
just sold the first of my 3 apples; none of them worked properly after installing S5; never thought I'd say this but have gone back to Win for 'quality / reliability' reasons.....
sad to see that Apple is too arrogant to even consider accepting this as a serious problem; (see their reply re the new iPhone... same story.... it's those stupid customers who create the problems...
Regular S5 problems. Quits unexpectedly almost every browsing session and gets hung when loading pages - only to load them straight away when I 'stop, reload',
After weeks of tolerating Safari 5 issues, I finally deduced my computer and FIOS connection are fine. I loaded Firefox, moved all my faves and tested. It's clear that Safari 5 has significant issues, confirmed by the thousands of posts with similar issues. Resetting, emptying cache etc. does not help, rebooting does...for a while, but once the glitches start rebooting is the only solution. I hate to do it, but until the fix is made available, it's another browser for this Mac lover.
Per "5klors" advice I went to this link and changed my DNS. Now all is good with the world (98% of the time anyways). Until Apple updates to 5.0.1 or what ever they will call it; the DNS change works for me. I had EXACTLY the same issue as you, and even then stoping and reloading did not work 100% of the time. Maybe 80% of the time.
Concur. Since it is the weekend, and I made some time for some more troubleshooting, the DNS change obliterated the failure to load pages.
Download the program, run it, then go to Network Preferences and change the DNS Server.
However, I've been here before only to find that the problem returns within a few hours. Let's see what happens this time, fingers and toes are crossed...
Does anybody know of anywhere on the net that links specific modems/routers (Chipsets) to problems with Safari 5?
I'm considering shelling out for a new modem/router (since my Billion 7300A,non wireless modem/router hasn't been getting firmware updates for years now) and it would be most handy to know exactly what modems/routers (and especially their chipsets) are or aren't suffering from the Safari 5 curse.
How I solved my Safari 5 hanging problem. After many weeks of reading this forum and lots of troubleshooting on my end, I discovered Safari 5 worked swell when by passing my old Belkin router. Pointing to my router as the issue.
Its been several years since any firmware update was issued for this model router. So I figured I would bite the bullet and take the chance on spending the money for a new router. Found a Netgear WPN824N router on sale at Best Buy and bought it. Connected it within minutes and Bingo NO More Safari 5 hanging problems. I waited over 10 days before posting this just to be sure this fixed my problem. The old router had no issues with any other browser and there is really nothing wrong with it despite its age.
Should anyone really have to shell out 50 bucks for a new router to correct the Safari 5 issue? I think not. Apple should really make changes to Safari 5 so that lots of us dont have to spend extra money to make that application work well.
I guess I am not the only one having trouble with Safari 5.
Ever since I updated I have experienced periodic hang ups. Not always but often enough to be a real pain. First I tried rebooting, then I tried cleaning out the cache and finally I reinstalled Safari and updated again to 5.0.
It still hangs up sporadically and often runs sooooo slow I am forced to switch to Chrome or Firefox.
Anybody know what's going on?
