ATT has not got rid of unlimited data for existing iPhone owners. You NOW have the option to select a less expensive plan.

I have to admit I have been a bit confused by this. I was not sure if you would have to downgrade your plan if you upgrade your phone. And I was pretty sure you could only get tethering if you had the 2GB plan.

Anyone who may have clarification on this would be helping my seriously confused brain out.

Existing subscribers with a phone in the smart phone category that have an unlimited data plan can keep their existing unlimited data plan when purchasing a new phone in the smart phone category - including when purchasing a new iPhone.

If you switch to one of the new data plans, you can't go back to the former unlimited data plan.

In order to get a tethering plan for the iPhone, you need to switch to the data plan with a 2 GB limit which costs $25/mo. The tethering plan will cost an additional $20 per month. I'm not sure what the data limit is for the tethering plan.

I spoke to ATT today. The unlimited plan will be available through your current contract period. Once you get a new phone that starts a new contract and bye bye unlimited plan. Also, once you switch to the lower plan you can NOT go back to the unlimited pland EVEN IF YOU ARE STILL WITHIN YOUR CURRENT CONTRACT PERIOD.

Now, if you keep your phone LONGER than the contract period I do not know what will happen to the unlimited plan at that time.

Hi Allan,

Could you provide a link for this? I would like to have proof so if my AT & T store tells me otherwise, I could show them that it is not true. Thanks.....

I was worried it was going to be like this. So according to what you were told directly from AT&T.... once I purchase the new iPhone 4.... I will be essentially starting a new contract and be forced to choose from one of their two existing data plans.

I don't need tethering so I was hoping I could just stay on my old plan.

That blows.
