Why are iPads so expensive on Ebay?

I am interested in buying one of these devices, but I just don't have the money to buy a new one at this moment. I don't understand why it is impossible to find one for under $500, yet that is what the 16 GB Wi-Fi version costs from Apple. I understand tax adds about $20, but it still should be quite a bit less for a used model.

I want one of these, but it's not easy to swing at $500.

Apple is having a hard time meeting the retail demand for all models of the product. Retail stores have little or no stock on hand. When this happens, secondary sources of supply tend to charge more. Craig's List is another example. It is highly unlikely that price will go down until there are plenty to meet the demand at a retail level.

As people decide they now want 3G ability, along with the GPS, you may start to see used WiFi only models sell at lower prices. Right now, people are buying them and reselling the new units.

I'd say it is a combination of what w2ox suggested and also the use of referral programs that pay the buyer cash back for their purchases. For example, Bing.com has been offering 8% CB on ebay purchases for quite some time making the net on a $500 purchase only 470. That + 6$ sales tax in my state equates to a $70 difference. The rest can be attributed to supply and demand.
