Safari 5 download location

Hi everyone,

how to set Safari to ask me where to save file on each download? I've checked the box "Always prompt before downloading" in Preferences, but with no effect...

Thank you.

I think the question has not been answered; I was going to ask the same one when I saw this post. The desired behavior is that each time a download is requested, Safari should ask where to save that specific file. The setting in Preferences menu only allows you to specify where all files are saved every time. Is there a way to have Safari ask where each new download should be saved?

If not, then I request that this feature either be added to the next release of Safari for Windows, or (preferably) that a downloadable patch be provided soon. Is this possible?

Thanks,
Owen_W

Same problem here, a checkbox like "ask saving location every time" should be add to the option menu for us who need to rename or change saving location...
I am sure i will not upgrade to 5.0 if i see this "handy" change have noted on the change list. Hope someone can see this and do something on the next update.

Because I don't want to have to go into my settings and change the download file 30 times if I'm downloading multiple items. Personally, I'm an organized fellow. I download certain items to certain folders. The box that is checked is supposed to prompt me where I want it saved, at least that's what the option seems. So, in a sense, it seems that the bug is in Safari 5, since it's worked just the way we wanted it to in the other versions.

I also would really like this feature. I'm seriously considering moving away from Safari again. I keep coming back to it because I find it generally works the best over any other browser, but I'm finding Safari's limitations a severe hindrance. I've gone back to school and most of my classes have an online component on Moodle. I create separate folders to store documents for each class. With Safari I've got the extra steps of copying a file out of Downloads an into the specific folder each and every time I download a document from Moodle or some other internet resource. I've tried the control-option-click trick on Moodle but I'm then prompted to save a file named link.php. Moodle normally opens a new window that does the download when I click on a file to download.

I really wish Apple would just include a "Prompt where to save downloads each time" option. Then I could just save the file to the right folder each time.

Well, there is my rant...

To whoever said "What's the big deal?" I say it is a huge deal. Every other browser lets you select where to save each file as you download it. I have Safari on a Mac and it has the same deficiency. Yes, you can change the default from Downloads, but that is not the point. Add to this the fact that to clear browsing data you have to go to 3 places (Cache, Cookies, History) separately, and it all adds up to Goodbye Safari!
(I am running latest version).

After developing the "awesome bar" of Firefox, but speedy as everything in webkit, this remains as the only feature before attempting a full switch from Chrome.

I really love safari, but as a web developer I am constantly downloading stuff and I need to organize it in a multitude of folders, I simply cannot have one bucket for all and having to switch to the file manager after each download is counter productivity I cannot afford.

Isn't there an extension to allow for this??? A download manager maybe??? I couldn't find one...

The other, although not hard, is to add the option for when to update (if at all) the topsites thumbnails, so I am not interrupted when I open a new tab after a while, having to wait for the thumbs to update before I can use safari again.

I've been searching for this, too. I'm pretty sure there used to be a way to have Safari prompt, but now, there certainly isn't. I, too, am very organized and often know exactly which folder I want something in. Opening DOWNLOADS and then navigating to the destination folder (that may be several folders deep) is a huge pain. And as noted above, Download As... doesn't work because often the link is to a script that then pushes the file.

Apple, please add this!

I am amazed and frustrated that the "Save Image As" and "Download Linked File As" options are gone!!! I need to be able to download items to particular (different) folders, and it's a time-consuming nuisance to have to go to my Downloads Folder and move them to the correct folder -- a step that completely avoided in previous versions of Safari. This has proven to be such an inconvenience that I'm looking for a new browser, even though I've been using Safari for years.

BUMP!

I'm still waiting for this feature to be added to Safari, or for the functionality to be available as a plug-in. Is it really too much to ask for there to be an option to prompt me where I want to save each and every file I download via Safari???

I've been using Chrome ever since my initial post, and it does have it's quirks. I'd really like to go back to Safari, but for my own personal schoolwork workflow I need to be able to choose where each file I download is going to go. I sort them by class, section, subject, etc. so I can get to them quickly when I need to.

BUMP BUMP BUMP!!!!!!

I just very RELUCTANTLY upgrated from my G5 PowerPC (which by the way was running perfectly without any hitch, except that to upgrade to Adobe CS5 suite - so that I could be inline with the rest of my design studio.. I had to upgrade to an Intel based Mac)

How i hate apple at this very moment though (it is becoming more like Windows... are you poaching developers from Bill Gates???)... I now have the new stupid operating system installed 10.6.5. First of all... WHERE IS THE FRIGGING "Open in new TAB" option. I found a code to put into terminal which seemed to fix this issue somewhat but not completely.

NOW.. BUMP BUMP BUMP... Asif you'd not allow us to choose a download location specifically for EACH download?? DUMB DUMB. It is very important. Very Very important. Don't **** what isn't broken.
