Trackpad does not click

Do you mean that the physical trackpad doesn't click down when pressure is applied to it or do you mean that when you press down, the MBP doesn't registers the input?

I just started experiencing the same problem with my 13" MacBook Pro that I got in September. When I click and apply the same amount of pressure that I have in the past it does not register the click. I have to either press multiple times or press extra hard for it to register. I have turned on the tap to click feature just so I don't have to keep pounding on the trackpad. Have you tried calling apple support?

The trackpad is hinged at the top edge. So if you click closer to the top edge it will require more pressure and perhaps not register.

If you have set right hand or left hand bottom corner for secondary click, Just press on right/left hand bottom corner and see if the contextual menu comes up, that should tell you if it is registering. Hope that helps.

Other than that, it might need to be taken to the store for them to have a look at it.

I am having the exact same problem! HELP what to do?

My almost two year old MacBook Pro started doing this when it was about a year old. I brought it to the Apple Store and they replaced the entire trackpad. This resolved the issue for quite a while but now it's starting to act up again. I can physically click the trackpad but every 1 out of 5 times or so the click doesn't register with the OS. This can be very frustrating especially trying to drag windows to objects around when you have to click and hold.

My 13 inch MBP does the same thing. It will make the click sound but will either not register the click or it will stop holding the click even though I am maintaining the click. Even with firm pressure. Even being careful not inadvertently touch it.

For example: I will try to hold click and drag and the cursor will release the item without me releasing the click. No matter where I click it is the same thing. Sometimes it works but most of the time I have to press click more than once. Trying to highlight is very frustrating. It's worse if I'm dragging a file and it drops it in another location.

Sometimes it will register the click and hold, stop, and then continue to hold thereby grabbing something new or even pressing a button I didn't want to press.

I tried turning off the computer and pressing "shift control+optionpower" all at the same time. This seemed to make it better but only for a day.

I haven't used my 13" that often until recently. So it's not worn out or abused in any way.

I got my MBP13 in March 2010 and it has only had casual use.

The clicker stopped working correctly yesterday and it's now impossible to use efficiently.

After some testing I noticed that it is responding on the RELEASE of the button instead of the PRESS.

Hopefully the Apple Store has a quick answer.

I have a 15" MacBook Pro ronning OS 10.4.11.
The trackpad has suddenly stopped accepting clicks. The trackpad makes a clicking noise and moves normally but nothing happens on screen.
Plugging in a mouse and rebooting allows normal operation.
If go to System preferences/keyboard & mouse and uncheck 'Ignore trackpad when mouse is present' and then click on the trackpad, the machine ignores both trackpad clicks and mouse left clicks but responds only to mouse right clicks. A reboot brings back full operation on the mouse.
Any ideas on how to resolve this one?

Also, check the battery for swelling.

I tried this and it may have worked- I now have a clicking clicker!

Hi there - I have had the same problem for a while.
I bought my Macbook Pro in July last year (2009) and the clicking worked fine.
Suddenly, about 8 months after I had bought it, it stopped registering clicks, despite the click having nothing 'physically' wrong with it.
All of the other functions with the trackpad work, and now I have had to use 'tap to click' which I have got used to but it is indeed very annoying.

I tried looking for answers at the time. I tried resetting the SMC and 'before resetting the SMC'

and it did work for about an hour, but then it stuffed up again. Since then I haven't been able get it to work.
Is this a fault with the manufacturing? Because I found Apple to be very unhelpful, as I never received a reply when I sent them an email.

I bought my Macbook Pro 15 in December and it stopped working in March, When calling and e-mailing to apple they told me the same excuse about not working at top etc. It doesn't work anywhere, only after clicking 10's of times or the occasional really hard click. It still makes the noise and tap to click and multitouch work fine. It really ***** when you enter a program that doesn't accept tap click i.e. rebooting from CD for disk utility!! I haven't been home since march cuz I'm a student in caribbean so as soon as I get home in a few weeks I'm taking to apple store. In a sense I'm glad to see a lot of people having the issue so that apple can't give me anymore excuses.. Btw, since that failure in march, the computer's gone down hill. battery cycling impossibly fast (39 time in past 24 days?? i'm not even on battery long enough for that to happen!, errors and freezing temporarily as well as significant slow down) I'm a veteran Macbook Pro user and have done all tweaks/resets/DIY attempts and nothing. Make sure apple fixes it, refer them here if anything. Good luck everyone.

I'm happy to say after booking a visit with the Genius Bar my clicking problem was resolved in about 45 min - the Apple Store replaced the Track Pad on the spot, credit paid where credit due.

Was your MacBook still under warranty? I would like to get this fixed on my MBP but it's been out of warranty for a while now.

I just had this problem for the last couple of days. I thought that it might be because I attached a mouse to my MacBook Pro after not having a mouse on it for so long. I detached the mouse and deactivated USB Overdrive. The clicking is now normal, although it took some bit of clicking before it felt normal again. It seemed as if it had to "warm up." I'm thinking that it may not be a hardware problem.
