Use relative cell references in conditional formatting?

Hi all,

Can't quite see how to achieve something here. In a column of numbers, I want to change the text colour in a cell if it's the same value as the cell above. (Basically to "hide" it by changing the text to the same as the background.) It works fine at the top of the column, but when I copy it down the conditional formatting still refers to the top cell rather than simply the one immediately above.

In other words in cell G2, I have conditional formatting to say "if G2 = G1, change text colour) but when I copy the cell contents down the page they all refer back to G1. The actual values are calculated by a formula, and that updates fine using relative cell references as I'd expected, but the conditional formatting doesn't seem to and I can't see how to make it happen.

Kind regards,

Trevor

Trevor,

Conditional Formatting in Numbers is a bit weak in this area. The cell comparison references in Conditional Format are all absolute, not relative, so they don't adjust as you fill down the column. You'll have to visit each cell and set its format individually. It would seem easier to have an auxiliary column that contains a formula that tests the cell above, in the original column, and displays a null string if the cells are equal, and the parallel cell if not.

Thanks for that. SHame, really - I used to use conditional formatting a lot in Excel, but without relative cell references it's almost no use to me.

Hi Trevor,
Sounds like it's time to Provide Numbers Feedback and make a request for a feature enhancement.
Almost every Apple application has a Provide (application) Feedback item in it's Application menu (in Numbers, the "Numbers" menu). Feedback sent via that route goes directly to Apple and is passed on the the application's developers. Requested changes won't take place until at least the next full version.

In this particular instance, I managed to achieve my aim solely with a formula (a much neater solution that I wished I'd thought of before).

Care to share? I'm sure others would be interested, as this issue has come up previously in the forum.

Regards,
Barry
