How to remove one file from the finder's toolbar

Control-click it and choose Remove Item.

I don't understand. I didn't know one could drag a file to the Finder tool bar. I am trying to do it and nothing happens.

Can you be more specific as to what is going on?

Hold down command and drag it out of the toolbar.

OK, I've been around for a bit, what is the toolbar? Are we talking about the menu bar?

Are you referring to the "Places" list in the finder window? I can only drag a file to that location and no where else on the lists.

You can drag any file to the toolbar across the top of any Finder window (provided of course that it is set to show). Clicking it once will open the file. Command-clicking and dragging does nothing. Right- or control-clicking gives a contextual menu which includes 'Remove item'.

You can also drag any file to the 'Places' section of an Finder sidebar in which it is showing; it behaves as above except that in this case command-click and drag will also remove it.

If you have the sidebar and such showing, the top of the Finder Window with all the buttons on it. You can drag files/folders there for quick access along with customizing it to add other stuff besides the default.

Except, I guess, in the case of my machine in which Command-dragging will remove it from the toolbar. Just like all of the other things in the toolbar.

When I tested this earlier command-dragging didn't work... now it does... go figure. (Probably digitus difficultas).

Aha, thanks - I thought everyone was talking about the (desktop) menu bar. A bit confusing, when finder (without clarifying that any window is open) usually means the desktop. I got it!
