Low ink warning displays (on Mac) after installing new ink cartridge.
I have two new Macs (an iMac and a MacBookPro) both are printing to an HP Officejet Pro L7780 printer which is network attached (wired). Both Macs see the printer and print correctly and all related functionality (printing, scanning, etc.) appear to be working correctly. Recently I received a warning on both Macs that the yellow ink cartridge was low (which it actually was and the printer itself eventually told me to replace the cartrige). I installed a brand new (not refilled) HP 88 XL (extra capacity) yellow cartridge to replace the HP 88 original empty cartridge (not extra capacity). The printer reports a full cartridge in all of its diagnostics and via its web management interface. However, when I open the printer on either the iMac or MacBook Pro and select "Supplies Status" it still shows a low ink warning and shows the yellow level at about 1/8th full - well below the low level mark. Whenever I print - I receive a warning. The printer itself is fine. I recently connected my neighbors OfficeJet Pro L7680 (one model lower) - where all brand new 88 XL cartridges were recently installed and are in-fact full - and these show low as well, but in varying degrees of "lowness" not very consistent. Can somebody tell me how to clear the false low level warnings from the Mac side? Also I should mention that if I open the HP Utility from the print queue - it shows the ink levels correctly. The problem is limited to the "supplies status" window of the printer properties. This is the first time since owning the two Macs, that I have had to replace ink cartridges - so I can't say whether it ever displayed the ink levels correctly.
iMac - iMac10,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHZ,
Mac OS X (10.6.3),
HP OfficeJet Pro L7780
Printer has the latest firmware and has been connected, disconnected, reconnected, shutdown many times. No change. It appears that the HP Printer Driver (on the Mac) is not detecting that the cartridge has changed - or it is not capable of handling the status of an 88 XL (extra capacity) cartridge. HP site says - Mac OS X 10.6 has the latest drivers for this printer and the driver updates received from Software Update on the MAC are the correct and most recent drivers. Again I should mention - this is a network printer - it is stand-alone. I have not tried connecting it via USB - and I also stated that I connected the neighbor's one-model-lower Office Jet (also networked) and received the same results. Thanks anyway.
