iOS4 on 3GS - No WiFi

Yesterday I have installed iOS4 GM on my 3GS (running 3.1.3). I collaborate with two iPhone/iPad developing teams so I have access to the ADC pages for downloading iTunes 9.2 and the GM seed.
Everything went as planned but once the restore and sync finished I noticed that the WiFi field in Setting was grey out. I went to General/Network and also there it was grey out. No on/off switch.
I tried another restore. Same result. I have reset the network. Nada.
All the rest of the network connections work properly, including bluetooth.
I exclude an hardware issue because right before the installation the WiFi was working perfectly. I have searched in various forum but it seems I am the only one with this problem. Any idea?

Anyone know if 4.1 resolves this?

I hoped and prayed 4.1 would fix our wifi problem (I say we: about 8 of us at my company updated to iOS4 and wifi access at work instantly stopped).

No dice. 4.1 may even be worse (and really, they made no claim it would do anything for any wifi issue).

I even went as far (regretfully so) to wipe my phone and restore as new (loosing all my settings, game saves, contacts, etc) and nothing. No dice.

I have been on 4.1 since it was released and my wifi just bit the dust...
This is ridiculous. over 3 months. The issues with 4 appeared to atleast have been partially fixed for a short time but then came back with a vengeance. Apps crash, slow/sluggish response time from iphone, and now this....

I have an appointment to work with apple representative tomorrow morning but wen this occurred, I had to post and see if there was anything we could do to correct this particular issue... Unfortunately it does not appear there is anything.

Thank you apple for all the new features

I'm at least glad to hear that other people are having the same or similar issues as I am. FYI, I went into the apple store a few days ago and they gave me a brand new 3GS, I brought it home and updated the software and recovered to my old settings and I am still experiencing the same issues. I can log into my router (Cisco Linksys E3000) and get FULL bars on the reception indicator, but downloads are sluggish at best (a lot of the time the download will just time out on me), but as soon as I turn WiFi off, and it goes into 3G mode, what I was downloading INSTANTLY downloads (unless it's an app with over 20 megs, then if I ever want it to download I need to actually sync with iTunes). So, iOS4.1 does nothing to address this issue, and neither does getting a free, brand spanking, shiny, new "replacement part" iPhone...I'm definitely stoked for the day when/if somebody comes on here and says "PROBLEM SOLVED!!!"

I went to Apple store after trying everything on these boards (except oven and freezer). My 3G connected to the wi-fi network at the Apple Store immediately. I talked to the "genius" anyway and he gave me the same old crap (restore as new phone). I got home and it connected to my network. It worked all night last night. Today, back to nothing. I can see the network, but I cannot connect. It asks for password and says unable to connect. Any idea why it worked at the Apple Store and then at home, but then died again?

I think that the genius may have eliminated the iPhone as the issue. That being the case the next point of failure may be your router. Go to the router manufacturers website and establish if they have updated the firmware for your equipment and if they have published a new version consider updating the router software. Then in settings I would get the iPhone to forget the Network and then switch the phone to Airplane mode and then press then iPhones Menu and On/Off button together until you see the Apple logo appear and then disappear. Whilst the iPhone is OFF switch the router OFF and wait say 5 minutes for the IP lease to be renewed by your ISP [assuming that it is dynamic]. Then switch you Router ON and make sure that another WiFi device can connect. As administrator logon [using your browser]to the http address of a Router. The usual address is either 192.168.0.1 or 10.1.1.1 and check as to what devices are connected.
Switch the iPhone On then switch Airplane mode Off and then try to establish the WiFi connection. If you still cannot achieve connectivity as further proof you have a router problem [be it hardware software or how it is configured] try and connect to another WiFi Network. In my part of the world that would be Macdonalds or a store location for my service provider. Good luck as problem solving is simply a process of eliminating the issues. Ant..

Thanx for the help. It still doesn't work. When I restored the phone as new, it worked for about a day. Also, my laptop and my wife's iphone (still running iOS3) connect fine. Here's another strange wrinkle. As part of my testing, I plugged in an old LinksysG router. It connected to that. It was just plugged into the wall nothing else. When I unplugged the old router my iPhone was connected to my newer one. As of now it still is, although I fully expect it to not work sometime tomorrow. My N-router is a TrendNet and I can't find a setting for logging on it. Apparently, the iPhone won't connect to the TrendNet unless it connects to another network first. Any ideas?

Have had iPhone3 since new and been happy with it. Upgraded to iOS4 and wifi started regularly dropping out and has now stopped searching completely. Tried resets and restores to no avail. Network says hardware problem definately not software but I remain unconvinced. Upset that Apple have not been helpful and are ignoring what is obviously a problem. So much for a premium product at a premium price. I will not be buying in to that again anytime soon.

I have the same issue with intermittant or no connectivity to Wi-Fi. Phone was working 100% until a couple of days ago. Now it cannot connect to the Wi-Fi that I normally use. I took the phone into the local Apple store and it connected to their network. The Genius told me that the phone will stay on 3g. When it accesses the Internet (Wi-Fi), then it will will switch to Wi_fi and bypass 3g. IMO, the Apple reps are covering up a flaw with the OS. Why would Apple release an operating system that will not work on the older phones ??? It looks like it is a big money grab in that everyone should be constantly upgrading their hardware to the latest and greatest.

If something works good, why change it ?!?!?!?!? I am totally disappointed with this whole issue. I am tempted to roll back my OS to a version I know will work.

I'm yet another victim of the iOS 4.x update for iPhone 3GS WiFi. I updated directly from iOS 4.0 to 4.2.1, and shortly thereafter, although the WiFi settings option was still available, could no longer see any nearby networks. I live in a fairly densely-populated city with a zillion hotspots around me, so this was exceptionally odd. I reset network settings, then reset all on the phone, and finally restored the iPhone to its original condition -- nothing. Eventually I played with the settings on one of our routers (a generic Belkin thing) and briefly switched it from no security back to WPA -- the phone eventually saw the router, and we're up and running again. Oddly enough the phone still can't see our Time Capsule router (running on a completely separate internet connection). I'll have to see if I can re-establish connections with other routers outside my home though.

Weird. You'd almost think that some developer had been given the mandate to make older iPhone handsets seem just buggy enough to force users to buy a new handset.

Genius Bar at Fifth Avenue was no help. They performed a DFU reset but to no avail.

They offered to have me pay $199 for a replacement, as I was out of warranty. I asked the rep, "Can you understand what I'm hearing? I upgrade my phone with your software, the WiFi stops working as a result, and you ask me to pay for a new phone?" he replied that it was a hardware problem -- either the WiFi failed coincidentally, or else the iOS upgrade "exposed" a hardware defect. He was evasive when I asked if I could downgrade my firmware back to iOS 4.0. He kept going back to the option of buying a replacement unit.

Weird eh?
