iPhone 4 video size, should I get 16gb or 32gb?

How many minutes/hours of HD video will the 16gb iPhone 4 hold compared to the 32gb? I'm trying to decide if I need to get the 32gb model.

iPhone, iPhone OS 3.1.3

I'm wondering the same thing. For me, I'm planning to get the 32gb to be safe, but can't decide what to do for my wife, knowing she won't use as much space as I will. I'm trying to see if she will be fine with the 16gb without shortchanging her, so we can save at least a little money. But yeah, I realize if I can't add later...

The best I can figure, she would probably needs something like:

5gb songs

2gb apps (I doubt she'll have this, but being safe)

3gb photos? (no idea how much space a reasonable amount of photos will take up - meaning ones synced from iPhoto, moreso than ones taken on the iPhone)

3gb TV Shows/Movies

That's 13gb, leaving 3 gb for HD video taken by the camera, and email. How much does email take? If you have an IMAP account, does it store everything (including folders) on the iPhone as well?

Does anyone with a 16gb model know if these numbers are realistic or not?

You can get this from the size of the songs you have.

That's a LOT of apps. Individual apps are rarely larger than 20 MB and many are much smaller. I have 120 apps, occupying 2.25 GB.

Photo size is partly determined on the resolution of the source. My 5 megapixel camera results in an average file size of 100K; my 11 megapixel SLR more like 300K. Note that photos are scaled down for the iPhone.
3gb TV Shows/Movies

If they are not HD this is reasonable. HD will take 4 GB/hr.

Email is usually minimal. For IMAP all of the folders will appear, but they won't sync until you either open them or mark them as sync. I have Exchange sync and my OST is over 1 GB, but most of that does not sync. I only sync Inbox and 2 other folders.

Some alternate ways of looking at it:

You are committing to pay at least $1500 or so for service over two years. The extra $100 for the 32GB is only a fraction of the total iPhone cost of ownership. Spending the extra $100 up front may also mean that you get more value from the monthly fees.

What storage space really affects, however, is not what you can do on a daily basis. Rather, it's a question of whether you are willing to be consistently adjusting your phone. If you want to never have to think about it, and to let months elapse before you move your photos and video off the phone, get the 32GB (and know you are risking data loss without backups). If you know that you will plugging the phone into the computer every few days and switching out tv shows as you watch them, and that your favorite songs change weekly so you sync with iTunes daily, and that you always import your photos immediately so that you can see them, then chances are, you'll never run up against the limits of the 16GB.

I was just asking myself the same question. I really want to believe 16GB would be fine, and I'm sure it would be, IF I constantly monitored what was on my phone. But that's not my personality. I got an 160GB iPod Classic because I never ever wanted to think about what was on my iPod. I just wanted it all there. Looks like I should also just suck it up and shell out the extra dough for the 32GB.
