Sharing VPN connection to PS3

Hi everyone, Hoping someone can help me with this.

I set up a VPN connection on my iMac. No issues there, I am using the OS X VPN settings in the Network settings of OS X System Prefs.

The issue I am having is getting the PS3 to actually connect to the internet. I set it up to take my iMac's IP address as the default router (192.168.1.103). My Airport IP is 192.168.1.1.

Under Internet Sharing I told it to Share connection from VPN (L2TP) using Ethernet.

I read somewhere that sharing a VPN connection through a computer, the VPN packets will not go to sub IP's or computers connected to it.

I am wondering if there is another way to set this up. Using the iMac, Airport Extreme or even an X Server.

And because i've seen this question arise many times in other forums; I need to hook up my PS3 via VPN because I have a US PSN account and I cannot access all the content on the Playstation Store.

Thank you all for your help.

First, I'm not sure it's going to be possible to share your VPN with your PS3, but first things first, and that is to get your PS3 connected to the internet.

I'm assuming that your iMac connects to the internet via WiFi, and you want to share that connection over the ethernet connection, right? If your PS3 can get a DHCP address, just connect it via ethernet to your iMac, then in the Network Sharing pane, Share your connection from your Airport, to Computers using Ethernet. Your Mac will set up a second LAN with a different IP address realm, and your PS3 should then be online. Given the IP address of your Mac is 192.168.1.103, the IP address your Mac gives your PS3 is probably going to be something like 10.0.x.x.

If your PS3 is online, that's a good thing. The next thing is to get it to use your VPN. This is a bit tricker, and I'm not at all sure this will work, but back in the Network Tab, under your VPN, click the Advanced button near the bottom, and check "Send all traffic over the VPN connection. This will be slow.... only as fast as the weakest link, which is most likely the upload speed at the VPN server ISP.

Since you mention your "US PSN" account, I'm going to assume that you are not in the US at the moment. Assuming that your VPN connection is connecting with someone in the states, when your PS3 sends in a request to the store, it should appear as coming from the IP address at the source of your VPN connection.

Simply sharing the VPN connection won't work because your Mac is going to set up a separate LAN for sharing purposes.

Good luck, and let me know if this works out.

Nope, never got it working. Mac OSX does not forward VPN connection packets over the shared connection.

It all came about because I live in Spain but I have a UK version of a game, and I could only download the updates in the spanish version. So what I did in the end is connect to the PSN store using a friends account from the UK and, as he had already bought the update, I could download it to my PS3 no probs.

Thanks anyway for your reply!

Hey Joe

That will make things a bit more challenging, since I'm not sure you can share your iMac's ethernet connection via a ethernet hub/switch. There would be no way for other devices connected to determine if they were connecting to your iMac or to your router, and if the latter, obviously your VPN won't do you much good.

I have done some experimenting, and the ONE THING you'll also need to do is to add some DNS entries to your VPN connection as well(also under the Advanced Tab). Without that info, nothing happens. It would be BEST to use the DNS servers of the origin's VPN's ISP.... but... once you check "send all traffic..." if you can't get to the web on your iMac, your connected PS3 won't be able to as well.

May I humbly sugest that you first get your VPN to work with the Send All Traffic box checked, and then if your iMac can still get to the net, then work on getting your PS3 connected.... again, probably easiest for your iMac to connect via WiFi, and then share the connection via ethernet. A different version would be for your iMac to connect to another Mac via Firewire, and then share your ethernet connection, but I think you get the idea.

All of my tests have been done in the US. From my office, I connect to a VPN here in the States, then access the web server here in the office, check the web access logs, and it shows the IP address of the origin of the VPN, so it can be done.

Good Luck... let me know if I can be of any other help.
