What is folder: var (from old Mac) - is it used?

Hi,

I upgraded to a MBPro by using Migration Assistant. I see a folder var (from old Mac) in the root directory measuring 2.8GB. Is this in use or can I delete it? Are there any other temporary folders which I can delete post upgrade?

Thanks,
Prashant.

Are you sure this is from your old directory? Do you have 2 var folders?
From your "Go" menu in Finder choose "Go to folder" then type /var and press return.
var should be in private, if it is don't touch it.

var isn't a temporary folder, it is very important to your Mac.
The problem is that it is normally invisible and it has become visible.
Launch Terminal in /Applications/Utilities and at the prompt type...
*sudo chflags hidden*

Then drag the var folder to your Terminal window. It should show the path to the item. Press Return.

Note that if the name of the folder is actually "var (from old Mac)", not just "var", then it is not an important folder unless it's got something important from the var folder on your old Mac. I've seen a couple other people reporting such folders, so I'm assuming these are being created by Migration Assistant... not sure what the conditions are for its creation, though. I believe the other responders were assuming your hidden "var" folder had become visible.

Generally, if you don't do Unix or other power-user stuff, there will be nothing in the var folder that needs to be transferred from your old Mac to the new one.
