Fried CPU's maybe?

Hi all,

I've just bought a second hand Mac Pro off eBay, got it cheap because it stopped working all of a sudden for the vendor. He was told by a local shop that 'both the CPU's were fried".

My question is - would that happen? Would both CPU's go at the same time? ANd if only one goes, would the Mac still work on one?

And assuming I've got to replace these chips - what's the current fastest set I can drop in there? (May as well upgrade 🙂

It's the original MacPro 2.66

Cheers 🙂

There are a few scenarios where this could happen, but not that many. Honestly, it's impossible to speculate without looking at the system, what is wrong with it. It could be one CPU went out, and is gumming things up. SMP systems can get kind of cranky if one CPU goes out. You generally either have to replace it or put in a special bypass chip before the system works again.

I'd take it to an Apple Store or local AASP, and just act as if you're the person you bought the system from. Tell them it just stopped working on you the other day, and ask them to diagnose the problem(s) and give you an estimate. Most places, this is a free service. Then you can decide whether or not you think it's even worth bothering.
