Limited 1080p output to HDTV

Where do i start... 🙂

I can output 1080p at what appears to be 24 hz, I get slightly lagged playback of videos and jerky mouse movements on the TV (as expected I think at this setting).
http://i48.tinypic.com/19t9gl.png
When I try to output 1080p at either 50 Hz (PAL) or 60 Hz (NTSC), from the options above (IMG), I get no picture at all on the TV.

Other Points to note:

I can output 1080i fine.
I am attempting to do this with mirroring off, and 1:1 pixel mapping on the TV.
I currently have problems trying to output video at all with the lid shut, Ill try again tomorrow when I get a friends external keyboard.

I recommend downloading and installing SwitchResX. You can use it to reveal the exact details of the timing being sent to the TV. You can then compare that result to the TV's expectation. I notice from the user manual for your TV that the 1080p timing at 60 Hz should have a horizontal frequency of 67.5 kHz. You can confirm if that is the case or not.

SwitchResX can also be used to dump the TVs display driver data (EDID) to a text file. You can see what timings the TV is advertising to the Mac as being compatible timings, and you can make sure the Mac is correctly picking up those timings and supplying them.

Finally, SRX will allow you to build a custom timing, if that is what is required in the end, in order to get the TV working (hopefully).

Thanks for the reply. I have looked at the settings being sent from The TV and they appear to match the 1080p (NTSC) 60hz setting on swithresx.

Hmm. Then it really becomes a puzzle as to why it isn't working.
I'd be grateful If you could guide me through some steps to set the custom timing perhaps that will fix it.

Building a custom timing is for those times when, for whatever reason, a wrong timing is in use. But it sounds like the right timing is in use, so I wouldn't know how to advise you to build a custom timing better than NTSC timing.

There is one other thing I can think to try that has worked for others in the past. If you go into Displays Preferences, there is a checkbox for "Show displays in menu bar." Put a check mark there if it's not already checked. This should result in a new icon appearing in the menu bar. If you click on the icon and drop its menu, there should be a selection for "Number of Recent Items." Set it to 10. Now click on the icon to drop the menu a second time and see if a second 1920 x 1080 timing appears. Sometimes the second timing works in cases where the original timing did not.

I tried all the 1080p options that appear, 24/50/60 hz. However if I choose a specific resolution ie. 1440x900 I get no picture on tv. Im not sure if this another symptom to this issue, but maybe this info might be a known problem with a fix.

I ordered the official apple mini DP to DVI, hopefully that will fix it. Ill update here when it arrives. Thanks again BSteely.

Thanks for the reply again BSteely, this is the Export using the 3rd party mini DP adapter, as the apple mini DP adapter does not show/recognise the monitor in the the system preferences.

Re-reading the whole thread, it occurred to me that what's happening seems a lot like the type of thing that happens when too long a cable is in use. In cases like that, it will often happen that timings having lower pixel clocks will work, like 1920 x 1080p at 24 Hz, but then the same timing using a higher pixel clock will fail, like 1920 x 1080p at 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

But the cable in question is only 1.5 m, so that's not a very long cable at all. But I am wondering if the cable could be of such poor quality that this type of problem might still be in affect? Do you have another DVI to HDMI cable you could try?

By the way, the EDID for the Sony looks to be completely fine. No clues in there as to what might be the problem.
