Mac Mail Button Funtions Not Working; "Reply, Forward, New"?

Problem:

Recently the buttons in my Mail program seemed to have stopped working. My "Get Mail" button works properly and retrieves mail as it should. However, I cannot "Reply, Forward, or compose a "New" message. The buttons change color as I hover over them and click on them but nothing happens. Has anyone experienced this problem before or aware of any possible fixes?

I get a console error as follows upon clicking on the "New" mail button:

2010-06-12 23:09:44.761 Mail[443] * -[NSKeyedUnarchiver initForReadingWithData:]: incomprehensible archive (0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0)

KNOWNS:

I am not aware of making any changes that could have effected this functionality. I have tried numerous fixes:

Disk Utility: repaired permissions
AppleJack AUTO: system clean
plist file: moved to desktop
accounts: tried deleting and creating fresh email accounts in preferences
file scan: viruses etc
users: logged in as a different user (no luck)

I have googled around and looked through the forums with no luck as of yet. I found info on possibly downloading 3rd party software and installing ONLY the MAIL program from the OS install disk as a re-install but was holding out on this as a last resort; unless it is the only option as of now.

I want to say I remember this happening either to myself or on my brothers computer; where a certain attachment in an email was glitching the mail program; but I cannot remember exactly if this was the problem. I searched through my emails around the time of this issue but didn't find anything out of the ordinary as far as attachments.

I have been using Thunderbird which is working alright but I do like my Apple Mail. And I get annoyed when I can find a fix for something in particular. 🙂 I'd like to get my system back to normal.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi MG, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

Are you running any Mail add-ons, or 3rd party System add-ons?

2010-06-12 23:09:44.761 Mail443 * -NSKeyedUnarchiver initForReadingWithData:: incomprehensible archive (0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0)

I can't imagine what Mail is trying to read, but the 0x0s definitely looks like bad pointers to data in some file...

I had a vaguely similar problem a bit ago...

I eventually noticed that in Mail hitting Reply, nothing happens other than the button dims for an instant & this message shows in Console...

2010-04-18 16:05:48.648 Mail10891 * -NSAutoreleasePool dealloc: Exception ignored while releasing an object in an autorelease pool: * -NSCFArray addObject:: attempt to insert nil

If I hit the Forward button a new window opens to reply with as it should, but the send button gives...

2010-04-18 16:07:39.975 Mail10891 Exception raised during posting of notification. Ignored. exception: * -NSCFArray addObject:: attempt to insert nil

Thanks for the warm welcome BD and quick response.

"Are you running any Mail add-ons, or 3rd party System add-ons?"

I don't have any 3rd party add-ons for mail that I am aware of.

What would you consider types of systems add-ons?

I have some add-ons for firefox; web developing tools. I am currently trying to expand my knowledge in some web programming languages etc, including setting up my MAC for developing web applications and learning how to run system maintenance tasks, develop localhost and keep my system optimized. However, I don't think I have added anything except for the firefox add-ons which I did a while back before this incident.

I have installed some new applications after the mail issue occurred:
Thunderbird: to get my mail running
ClamXav: virus scan
applejack: system clean

Any idea what would cause the "pointers to bad data"?

Thanks again for the input!

P.S. I did come across your post prior to posting my problem. I remember your problem being the closest thing I found to my issue.

Jaxson,

I've got exactly the same problem, and what's odd is that it has come out of nowhere, as Mail worked fine yesterday. I'm completely up to date with software, and have no 3rd party add ons or anything like that. I click 'reply' and mail doesn't respond. Disk utility/ repair permissions, log in log out, restart etc etc does nothing.

What is going on?

Hi Tom, I tried all of those things, none worked for me, the only thing that worked was cloning the whole drive, then using Migration Assistant to Migrate the non working user's account to a new one, all of the user's prefs, settings, etc. were migrated to the new one and work fine... only difference I could find between the accounts was the old one was UID 503, the new one UID 505.

I had the same problem, which occured After installing Internet Cleanup, though whether that caused the problem or not I cannot tell. I get no error messages when I try to write/forward/send. I have uninstalled Internet cleanup but the problem persists. I have tried to reinstall Mail from my original Tiger Disc, but I cannot see a way of installing just Mail.
My updated Safari 4.1 is also not working well. Every time I press "delete" to change a letter or number I get taken out of the page I am on, and have to log in again to whatever site I am working on. Is this normal?

OK, don't boot from the install Disk, but put it in & when it mounts, look for "Optional Installs.mpkg".

Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4...

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301229

"Here's a list of all the custom installation options available with Optional Installs.mpkg:

* Applications
o Address Book 4.0
o iCal 2.0
o iChat 3.0
o iTunes 4.7.1
o Mail 2.0
o Oxford Dictionaries
o Safari 2.0
o X11"
