Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Well, I posted several weeks ago as just bought a new iPad 3 and has safari crashes often....

Well I am pleased to say that with the update to IOS 6 all my problems seem to have gone ( touch wood )...

The new update allowed me to have Siri also, not that she ever helps.. But hey that could be my accent that she just can't understand ?

So only a day ago before the update came through i could go to certain websites and could guarantee to be able to make it crash every time, but today after my update last night I am happy to say no problems yet..  I will be sure to post again if this changes, but for the time being it has been smooth sailing.

Best of luck to everyone with their issues, I know how frustrating it was when spending over $700 to have a dud.

Why is this not being fixed? Safari crashing every other minute no matter what. Are you seriously expecting us to keep buying Apple hardware when it really does seem like you're deliberately making old hardware unusuable?

The easiest fix--rathier than relying on Apple to address the issue--is just to install and use Chrome. Its a better browser anyway.

I assume nothing will come of this, but just another one who's iPad crashes all the time. Same as others, Safari, a few open tabs, usually somewhat media heavy, pics, videos, ad heavy sites. You know, the internet. The original ipad is not even three years old and cost 500 dollars. None of my janky computers 10 years ago crashed like this. It may only have 256 mb of ram, but still, how is that an excuse? That's far more than enough for simple browsing and caching a few tabs. It's not managing memory properly, and they're not fixing it because they want to sell new ones? The iPad is not a 200 dollar phone, it's a 500+ dollar computer. I'm not going to buy a brand new one every year or two for minor spec updates, they need to support their devices for a reasonable time and at least patch bugs like this. It's so blatant, it's almost as if they're not fixing it on purpose.

My question regards to ipad crashing, "is all the ipads crashing or is this occurring to a select few ipads?"  I asked friends if they have experienced this crashing and they say no.  My friends have the ipad 2 - no crashing.  I have the ipad 1 - many crashes.  Why is the crashes happening to some ipads and not the others?

I have noticed that mine only crashed a lot when i wasn't turning it off for a few hours every day. Now that I'm doing that again, I haven't had another crash in two weeks.

To some extent, the Safari crashing regularly problem happens to all iPad 1 models and apparently, even some iPad 2 models. It afflicted my iPad 1 and appeared to be caused by a combination of memory management issues introduced with iOS 5 and the coding on some Web page designs that still may not have been updated to this day. Add to this variables such as iPad usage habits (quitting Apps, number of open Safari tabs, Web sites visited, etc.).

I even experienced a similar "Safari crashing occasionally" (not regularly) problem with my iPhone 4 and iPad 3, but iOS 6 seems to have addressed these.

My 18-month old iPad 1 was badly afflicted, but not until about two months after iOS 5 was installed. Odd. When iOS 5.1 was released, I reformatted it from scratch (restored as new) and manually re-installed all my Apps. This significantly reduced the number of crashes, but they still occurred with a few certain Web pages. A couple of months later, the iPad 3 was released, and I upgraded because I needed the expanded photography capabilities since I'm a pro shooter. I reformatted my old iPad 1 from scratch, gifted it to my sister and crossed my fingers. She's been using it for nearly nine months now with no reported problems. Go figure. My significant other experienced a few iPad 1 crashes with iOS 5, but never to the extent that I encountered and she still uses and relies on her iPad 1 every day.

I made peace with my time with the iPad 1. It was a fantastic and revolutionary, bleeding edge, product. First-generation hardware ALWAYS has a shorter lifespan and more issues than subsequent products. I was glad to be able to gift it to my sister and thankful (but perplexed) that she hasn't encountered any more crashing issues.

Chrome and Atomic Web crashes too, not just Safari. As soon as I use FB it crashes, noticed this more since the iOS update. I'm sure the FB app does the same. Other weird things I've noted since the update, weird white flashing bars in text fields. I'm using a brand new iPad 3. Never had any issues before this or no my iPad 2. :(

I have an interesting update.              Since my iPad 1 had Apple-Care (purchased in Sept 2010 - 64GB 3G), The Apple Store replaced it TWICE within the last 30 days.        They could not figure out the problem in the store.       The 2nd replacement did not even have OS 5 installed.       It was brand new, no apps installed to cause a conflict and it still suffered the same low memory issue.       The Facebook Time Line pages seemed to cause the problem everytime.     It would go back to the home screen (not lock up, just crash out of Safari).

I now use the Facebook App and so far there are no problems.     The content/appearance is not the same but functionally it seems to work.          Safari will still crash sometimes when visitng other graphic intensive sites.

From what I have read here on the thread the issue is a combination of the OS, Safari App, and certain web page designs.            What gets me is even the new iPad suffers the issue too sometimes.     Safari seems to be the only common demoninator and web sites like FaceBook.

Spent most of yesterday trying various browsers, thought I'd found a workaround, but even that crashed eventually. Not sure about the official FB app, it's bugged with slow feed updating and ghost notifications, not to mention annoying adverts throughout. I'm sure it crashed on me a few times too. Have just tired MyPad+, expecting that to crash soon, but thus far it's playing fair, plus no adverts anywhere in the feeds. Have noted keyboard lag on all the browsers, slow stuttering scrolling too. The crashes are always on the FB timeline. Had them crash on other DB style sites. The blame lies squarely with Apple and they should come clean. This reminds of the constant IE crashes of the late 90s. I hope it's just software, but my fear it's maybe a serious hardware design fault. I love my iPad, but this is really killing my buzz. I'd like to know if this bug depends of the iPad memory size, is it effecting the lower models more than the higher ones? Hope the iPad Mini and the next iPad version update resolve this issue once and for all. Sick of it.

I think that since Apple is totally ignoring these issues and just blowing us off in this forum, that we send a link to this forum and thread to any website that can spread the word even more.  Send it to Gizmodo, Engadget, Cnet, etc. to get our complaints heard.  This is a serious issue, and as I have said before, no one should have to take any special steps to get your device to work.  It should work as advertised PERIOD.  No " shutting this off " or " using this app instead of the software (Safari) that is the standard Apple browser.

I'm going to do it and encourage the rest of you to do the same.  Maybe this will get us some attention, since it's obvious Apple doesn't give a crap.

Web page designs are becoming more and more graphics intensive. The move to new retina displays and the installation of faster broadband networks already is spurring designers to double the resolution of Web graphics. Together, these developments will ensure the gradual obsolescence of all older computing hardware, including the iPad 1.

That's a harsh reality for some, but reality none the less.

These days, I think even Macs and PCs with just 2- or 4GB of memory ideally need 8GB to work efficiently. With a maximum of one gigabyte of working (RAM) memory, even the current iPads are lightweight devices. They are not designed to be 5-10 year devices like desktop and notebook PCs. I think Apple designs them to be two or three-year devices at best, while consumers hope they will be three-to-five year devices. Usage variables account for the discrepancy. In my opinion, Apple may have under-engineered the first (2010) iPad's system memory (just 256MB). But, they did deliver a groundbreaking product at price points that surprised everyone.

Ultimately, with all these factors in mind, I concluded it was time to upgrade (to the 2012 iPad 3).

If you haven't already done so, during your next tech support call, ask to a customer satisfaction rep, or, write an e-mail letter detailing your problem and concerns to Apple CEO Tim Cook. He has an executive relations team that handles vexing issues like this. The results may or may not be the same, but you'll know you've down everything within your control to resolve the problem. And you'll feel better.

Half the problem with rich site content bandwidth use, is greedy bloat advertising, there should be strict limits to what they put out and use. I've noticed a trend over the years, as our machine and Internet speeds rose, which we pay for, so did the type of hog advertising leeching it at our cost. It's bandwidth piracy. On my PC I refuse to have any adverts at all, as a result, the machine runs smoother and faster, not having to download any of their useless crap.

Apple is not blowing off anyone in this forum. These strictly are user-to-user forums only, maintained by Apple as a free and extra tech support benefit. Apple monitors the content only to ensure discussion rules are followed, but that's all. The proper procedure for reporting problms and getting warranty tech support is as follows:

    - Call AppleCare at 800-275-2273

    - Use the "Contact Apple Support" Link on this Web page: http://www.apple.com/support/

    - Contact your local Apple Store.

    - File bug reports and complaints here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
