After a long time since my last post here, I was becoming increasingly frustrated with my iPad 1. The iPad everywhere reacted very slowly, Safari and web-based applications crashed more often, it was no fun anymore, multitasking didn't not work. First, I have iCloud deactivated and did an iPad-Reset, which did not help anything. The frustration was so great that I was thinking of making a downgrade. However, I only had the SHSH blobs of iOS 5.0.1. After all, better than 5.1.1. I thought. So I made a signed Firmware with iFaith (5.0.1.) and restored to this firmware. I then set up the iPad as a new iPad and didn't activate iCloud. Right now, the iPad is much better again. It is faster overall, Safari crashes fewer times, but only for memory-intensive sites like www.9to5mac.com. Overall, I recommend a downgrade to anyone who has even earlier SHSH blobs secured. Best of luck!
Downgrading is not supported either. Here's what I think: you need to get the best tech support you can. If you have an non-jailbroken android device, you are entitled to it.
My ipad is largely fine with very few crashes and oddites though it is old.
My iphone 4 has just started to crash.
Do the following please;
1. Check disk space,
2. Confirm your method of backup (icloud vs. computer)
3. Confirm whether you have restored.
4. Believe it or not, running the latest version of the OS can sometimes help. (Counter-intuitive, but true.)
5. Do these new ipad crash before you configure them, or after? Can you spell out the exact test case which makes them crash? (ie. setup with my apple id, download from icloud, go to articles on cnn.com for instance.) -->random example.-->
I forgot to add when I have had crashing on the ipad, the following normally fixes it.
1. Clear Cookies and Data. (not clear that's necessary but good to do)
2. Turn on Private browsing and close all tabs. (you don't have to, but good to clear everything out.)
3. Confirm Safari works in private browsing mode (optional)
4. Turn it back off.

The CNN.com crash I was experiencing seems to be slightly seperate, and is documented in other threads.
Question - Do you work for Apple ?
Points - This is not a jail broken ipad - see my note that I am on the 3rd unit supplied by Apple - hopefully they dopn;t supply jail broken units....
Please review my previous posts - This crashing happens on units I take out of Apple store and to which I have added nothing. I replicated problem in front of Apple employees but they stand there and tell me they have never seen this before and proceed to replace the unit !!
The crashes only began happening when I applied 6.01.....strange but true - this is why I wanted a downgrade to prove this was the case but oh no - we can;t do that...
As I have previously stated I am amazed that as a customer I am treated as a moron... I have been in the IT business for some 30 years and I have never seen such appalling treatment... Oh well when I can convince the home finance manager, Samsung and/or Kindle here I come....

What sites do you frequent that cause Safari crashes? For me, on my iphone 4, it's CNN. More importantly, when you use an ipad in the store to go to that exact same URL, does it also crash?
This is a very useful test.
Here is a question that I asked before that I genuinely need an answer to: are you using icloud backup?
If it happened after the 6.01 update, what operating system version was it running beforehand? In other words, was it a 6.0 to 6.01 update? or a 5.0 to 6.01 update? This shouldn't matter anyway, as updates are supposed to reimage the phone, but I wanted to ask. Did you install it OTA or via USB?
If it genuinely happened after the update, there are two possibilities:
1. The update got corrupted (pretty unlikely given that there's presumably a checksum check.)
2. The backup when transferred to the new OS corrupted the OS install. If you did not update your apps prior to the OS install, I would believe that this could be the cause due to the way that certain app libraries and components use the Safari rendering engine.
I'm going to give you some very direct advice here: If you have tried a restore and setup as new on these new devices via USB and it is still crashing on both your own router and on others and on 3G/4G if you have it. (btw, it's worth turning off cellular data if you have it and making sure it's not the SIM), you should call Apple, ask to speak to Åpple Customer Relations, and encourage them to have you send your crash logs or iPad so they can flash its firmware and make sure the "restore" is actually a clean copy of the OS, and not corrupted in some way. (note: the firmware that apple flashes is different from the one itunes accesses from what I can surmise.)

This is an out-of-memory issue caused by memory pressure from content-rich (usually HTML5) websites combined with a larger OS memory footprint under iOS 5.x & 6.x. I have been working this issue for nearly 9 months with Apple Engineering & Customer Relations. They have all of the crash logs as well as a half-dozen web sites that they can use to replicate the problem.
The issue stems from the lack of available OS memory based on the combination of the hardware and the iOS version being run. First generation iPads have 256MB of RAM, iPad 2 = 512MB, iPad 3 = 1GB.
To prove the point I went to an Apple Store with my iPad1 and showed the "Genius" it could be reproduced on mine, and iPad 2 and the New iPad in exactly the same way. Using the same web site (Gizmodo & Facebook in my case) I can crash the iPad1 in about 15 seconds, the iPad2 in a couple minutes & the latest iPad in about 5 minutes.
The issue is less prevalent on the Opera browser and most prevalent on Safari. Chrome is somewhere in the middle.
The tech watching all this said "this is not a hardware problem - it is software". Duh. They proceeded to do a factory reset. The problem still existed (of course). Fast forward an hour+ in which the took a factory-new (not refurb) iPad2 and witnessed the same problem, then collected the crash logs from all the systems and then sent them to Apple Engineering.
A week later Apple Customer Relations contacted me and offered to replace by iPad1 with an iPad2 -- they said flat-out they would not replace with a 3rd or 4th-gen iPad. I took the replacement and the warranty extension they offered. The problem still exists though with far less frequency.
Our findings were:
The older the hardware, the more prevalent the issue
iOS 5.1 and higher on the older hardware made the problem worse
Enabling iCloud made it even more unstable on older hardware platforms
iOS 6.1 will NOT fix this issue
Such is the nature of tablet computers with fixed RAM sizes and the inability to do operating system patches. I can assure you that Apple is aware of this issue, but to acknowledge it widely opens them-up to a huge amount of service expense liability. In the interim, it is easier for them to swap units and deal with this on a case-by-case basis until the first two generations of iPads are past their warranties and Applecare contracts.
If this issue is really a huge problem for you, either downgrade to iOS 4 or the first iOS 5 release, press Apple Customer Relations to replace the unit with a newer generation hardware, or live with it until they opt to address it in the operating system, which is where the problem lies.
Thank you, Music. I've been following this thread for a long long long time. I consider your reply definitive and validating of my own sense of what's happening, having worked since the dawn of the Mac with the most memory-intensive applications and operations. Trying to keep it real, I tell myself, "This is play, not work, anymore, and no one is dying here." For me, this is true.
The only question I have have left is "what can I do to help Apple decide to fix this?"

Music - As I have said I am on my 3rd unit from Apple yada yada yada (se previous posts...) and it reboots all the time despite what I am doing...email, a little translation app etc etc..As I previously said it only began to happen when I moved to the first V6 of upgrade. As Jeany says it is not big in the scheme of things but EXTREMELY annoying and proves what a behemoth Apple is with the resulting lack in customer service.
