Mar 17, 2013 7:06 PM in response to jimsimp3by gstar65,What cracks me up are all the people jumping into this thread threatening to go buy a Galaxy or other Android tablet. Go ahead and "Google" about Galaxy tablet crashes and you will see pages worth of threads talking about this very same thing in the Android universe. If you want to jump ship to Android, go ahead. you'll find very similar issues going on there...as they say, the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence...
Good luck to you.

Mar 17, 2013 7:17 PM in response to gstar65by jresh,Happy you're amused! Are you having an issue with an iPad crashing in Safari?
-
Mar 17, 2013 7:29 PM in response to jreshby gstar65,Well, perhaps saying it cracks me up was a bit inappropriate. I don't revel in anyone's problems. To answer your question, I don't know that I have specific issues with Safari, but I do have occasional crashes with my 1st Gen iPad in various apps. I do believe that the OS and many of the latest apps are meant to utilize the higher memory capabilities of the newer units. Its inevitable. However, I can also say that I owned three Android devices before I bought my iPad, and all three had severe issues with applications "force closing" as well as the OS itself completely freezing up. At least the iOS can recover and continue without a full reboot needed.
My wife is interested in a Kindle Fire. We both have Kindle readers and have been very happy with them. however, every time she sees the iPad mini, she becomes unsure about the Kindle idea. All things considered, I still think Apple has the better overall setup taking into account OS, Store, and Hardware Quality. All Android has in their favor is price (a big plus btw although many of Samsungs new offerings are every bit as expensive as Apple).

Mar 17, 2013 11:21 PM in response to gstar65by Mrduttz,I have a 1st gen iPad and I rarely have any problem with Safari crashing. App store on the other hand does it frequently. Productivity apps like Pages are slower now but I agree that it was inevitable that upgrades would make them make more memory demands.
I am really happy with my iPad. When I look at the competition I find it underwhelming. Despite the price I think I would feel shortchanged if I replaced it with anything other than another iPad. And my next desktop computer will be a Mac.

Mar 18, 2013 1:48 AM in response to Rob Bruenby europafoto,Well I now have a 4th gen iPad with retina display and rarely get any crashes with the Facebook app and/ or Safari perhaps those out there that are having issues with this device should consider and restore (and update if its not been updated). That will probably resolve many issues, before resorting to purchasing a rival and possibly inferior tablet computer.

Mar 18, 2013 2:00 AM in response to gstar65by Suissejas,gstar65 - fair enough but my beef is that Apple leaves customers out in the cold and WILL NOT admit to a problem..

Mar 18, 2013 6:44 AM in response to Suissejasby jresh,That certainly is a valid observation, Suissejas!

Mar 18, 2013 6:50 AM in response to gstar65by jresh,I, too, am interested in the Kindle Fire, having had 2 Kindles. I gave my Kindle2,which I loved, to my daughter and am not terribly thrilled with the Touch. It's a bit too small!
I'm sorry to hear that Android has similar issues, but in a rather perverse way, it's comforting. Like Suissejas commented, the infuriating thing is that Apple "leaves customers out in the cold" and won't acknowledge the problems!
If your wife does get the Fire, please post and let us know how it works out. If I decide to get one, I will do the same.

Mar 18, 2013 11:55 AM in response to Suissejasby geopix,Sorry to hear you're having iPad problems, but FYI, the Kindle Fire is not a full-featured tablet. It is an e-Reader with far more limited capabilities and its own idiosyncrasies and issues, any of which, any given user could encounter. See this: http://m.digitaltrends.com/mobile/kindle-fire-hd-problems/
This is not to say it won't be a better machine for your needs, but it is not a perfect device either. In fact, the iPad garners 20% higher customer satisfaction ratings, the best in the industry (not including the iPhone).

Mar 18, 2013 12:18 PM in response to geopixby Suissejas,Funny but I have never been invited by Apple to give a customer satisfaction rating...!!! Methinks more spin...

Mar 18, 2013 1:53 PM in response to geopixby joejackson40,@geopix are you an apple employee/apologist on this board? If so I would LOVE to hear what Apple's doing to fix the problem it CAUSED with the recent 'upgrade' which has rendered our iPads USELESS as browsers. Seriously...is APPLE just expecting us to toss these things to buy whatever version is currently being advertised, slickly and compellingly. Unless we're using them for games for 12 yr olds. they're literally useless.

Mar 18, 2013 2:20 PM in response to Rob Bruenby Dopplor,Seems like so many of you are talking but NO one is suggesting any solutions. We have had some serious problems with crash issues with our Ipads (27) with the new software updates, one item that helped fix a number of problems was the Following.
Hard Reset then try Logging out of the Icloud and then Log back in. Don't ask we still don't know why it fixed Calendar errors but it did.

Mar 18, 2013 5:42 PM in response to Suissejasby gstar65,No one ever does. Do you see Google running around announcing how buggy Android has been? Or how often their apps force close? Never! The only mistake Apple made was allowing early iPad users to continue upgrading their OS long after they should have been cut off. My first Android device was the Samsung Moment. I got that phone about 6 months before the release of the Galaxy S. The Galaxy S came with an update to the Android OS that they immediately announced would not be available on my 6 month old Moment. Those of us on the Moment forums were VERY annoyed that we had an extremely buggy, unstable OS with no resolution ever to be offered in a phone less than a year old. The moral is that no matter who you go with, you are eventually going to age out and have to upgrade, or be left behind.
All of these companies try to mute the talk around problems, and work behind the scenes to resolve the issues before they come too much to light. Its not that they don't care; they do, but they also need to continue a positive marketing voice. I don't know that Apple will do much for the original iPad anymore, but rather focus their effort on more current models. Its unfortunate, but this is not at all unusual for any manufacturer. Google, Samsung, HTC, Microsoft, etc. etc.
