Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Has nothing to do with websites - I will crash regularly on any app at any time....my point (and fujifilm's) remains that until the os upgrade everything was fine and his point about the bike chain is as valid as ever. I see there are over 423,000 views to this thread which would mean to me that there is a problem and yet I have yet to see anyone in any capacity from Apple come on here to help - my feeling is that this appears to be an official Apple site or am I wrong on this ? Either way it is pathetic.

Apple does not provide technical support through thes user-to-user forums, which are maintained solely to allow us (customers) to share information about common problems. If you have tech support needs, you have to do what all of us here do -- call Apple directly -- or log into their support Web page, describe your problem and have a support technician call you right back.

We own a fair amount of Apple gear (three Macs, four iOS devices, network devices) purchased on a staggered schedule. Consequently, we regularly seem to purchase or upgrade some network device or computer every couple of years or so. Therefore, we always have some device covered under an extended warranty, which keeps us qualified for free tech support calls. And we DO routinely purchase Apple's extended warranty too, and always try to purchase network gear (Airport, Airport Express, Time Capsule) on the same invoice as a new Mac or iOS device. That way, the extended warranty purchased for the computer also covers the network device (a welcomed gesture on Apple's part).

The extended warranties are worth their weight in gold when a tech support issue arises.

I also encountered the frustrating crashing iPad 1 issue after upgrading to iOS 5x. I reformatted the machine and manually re-installed all the software from scratch (not a backup) and the problem never reappeared. I then gifted the same iPad 1 to my sister, who's happily been using it for over a year without serious problems or a single complaint, though she says she does encounter an occasional crash.

I think the random but fairly widespread occurrence of this problem is caused by some combination of multiple factors, including iOS version, iOS upgrade path, ISP reliability (upgrade downloads can get partiallly corrupted), maintenance and reliability habits, Web pages visited, etc. Personally, I believe Apple may have under-engineered the iPad 1, which only has 256MB of memory. It was a groundbreaking device, but with the iPhone and iPod touch, caused an explosion in the advancement and use of increasingly complex Apps and HTML5 Web pages. Apple may not have adequately projected how quickly it's mobile technology would change computing.

My iPad 1 is also crashing mainly when using facebook, but also while zooming on images and when writing emails... a real ****.

Is someone out there (in APPLE) noticing that nearly half a million eyes are looking at this post???

    Agreed

At this point in time, this only "fix" for the iPad 1 would be for Apple to release a 5.1.2 patch that reduces the iOS footprint. But considering that Apple is focused on iOS 7 and this year's iOS devices ... and ... is in competition to deliver "innovation", do we really expect Apple to divert resources to the iPad 1? Seriously?

Not an Apple apologist ... an Apple realist.

THBS ... Either my surfing habits have changed or I keep fewer apps open or I just don't care that things crash now and then ... but I don't seem to be getting as many Safari crashes as I used to. I guess that my Safari now crashes maybe only once or twice a day.

So Datawrangler what you are saying is suck it up and go and buy another IPad.... Well let me tell you I cannot afford that option. Thing is that everyone is going on about Safari. - that isn't the problem as I have previously stated. FYI ..I have a HP Deskjet printer which is still going strong after 10 years and will continue for another 10 I am thinking. What would happen if HP said after a year that " sorry but we discontinuing producing the print cartridges for that model" .....wouldn't happen...so why should I have to buy another IPad just because Apple will not look after their customers ?  THAT is the reason I **** well won't

If this problem is not solved via iOS5 patch, I will NOT buy a new iPad, of course. And I can afford that option. It's a matter of principle. iPad pioneers deserve a better treatment.

MY iPad 1 crashes each time I go out to a travel reward site where I need to put in bunches of information over and over again. It is driving me crazy while trying to plan a trip to Europe. I would buy a new iPad but am concerned about buying one at before a new device comes out. Then my just bought new one would become old and likely not be supported with iOS upgrades. Catch 22 for me.

Don't bother with Apple. Go get a Samsung or Kindle Fire......anything but useless Apple machines and a complete lack of client care.

I downloaded the photon browser and it works fine with Facebook. Just click the lightening bolt icon.

Interesting that a small company can fix what Apple can not

Doubt a small company can fix it given it isn't just the browser which is at fault...
