All of a sudden Safari (sp.?) is crashing reliably. the only changes from the last several weeks is: I pretty much took everything back to defaults because I have been trying to get my Apple ID changed to my personal email instead of an email I share w my husband. HI worked out the struggles to get passwords, apps and everything to work together and it's all fine. I have a 64 gig and it crashed only on a Smashburger website. Never before and never since. Is safari the only browser you can use on the iPad?

As the buyer for our company of > 10,000 employees guess which tablets we will NOT be buying.

But I caution you, all the cheap knock-offs have their own idiosyncrasies, design flaws, performance issues, poor software and worst of all -- susceptibilities to viruses, spyware and malware.
The iPad 1's big flaw proved to be a lack of memory (only a paltry 256MB) and most crashing issues seem to be caused by this, though bad design and the coding on more complex Web sites also is a contributing factor. In fact, some people avoid any version 1.0 products all together. Recognizing this, many early iPad 1 adopters learned a lesson and moved on to second, third and fourth-generation models and more memory with satisfying results. I did this, and even reformatted my own first-generation iPad a couple of years ago and gifted it to my then 53-year-old younger sister. She's happily used it with her Macbook Pro and iPhone 4 ever since -- with no (or few) significant crashing problems (different Web habits, I guess). Now, she's even looking forward to her next iPad and watching for the upcoming iPad mini v2 model.
So, don't be too quick to throw Apple under the bus. The tablets made by other companies might make for a worse experience. Indeed, most Apple customers appear to be very happy with their purchases, especially as the device has been improved and perfected.

Web habits are exactly what this boils down to. The anaylasis above me is exactly right. The ipad mini and ipad 2 are almost identical hardware wise, and while my browser crashes very very rarely (any browser will), it is not nearly the problems reported on this forum.
Keep in mind the iOS browser cannot display an error message when javascript causes the browser to misbehave, perhaps that is a flaw, but that's how it currently stands.
FWIW, my stepmom has an ipad 1 with a very cautious upgrade strategy to iOS 5.1 when apps required it, and she has no trouble. I upgraded all of her apps first, and then upgraded the OS.
The newer ipads have many more times the RAM than the ipad 1 does, and they continue to increase it in every generation as component prices fall.
Safari has been significantly redone in iOS7 (judging from the keynote), ios6 is also very different from iOS5. iCloud support APIs have continued to improve.
If you are seriously contemplating thousands of ipads, feel free to contact Apple Business Sales. They will be happy to address your concerns, and give you a volume discount. You can always trade it in for the newest model when it comes out.

I am typing this on an iPad 1 with iOS 5.1.1. Does Safari ever crash? Yes. Is it website dependent? Yes. Is it a function of how many apps I have open? Yes. Will I ever buy another iPad? YES. Does Safari crash enough to effect my life? No.
I use my iPad 1 exclusively when not at my day job, and sometimes at my day job. I manage all of my finances and investments with it. Surf the web heavily. Monitor and respond to multiple email accounts. Write and maintain a blog. I play games - single player and multiplayer. I watch YouTube, iTunes, Netflix, and Vimeo videos, movies, and TV shows. I listen to an extensive music collection. All on my iPad 1.
For god's ... STOP WHINING! The iPad 1 is first generation. Apple will release the fifth generation iPad this fall. Each generation has doubled RAM and performance. If you honestly think that the current Android tablet is better than the current iPad, OK. But don't compare the current Android to the iPad 1. For a fair comparison you would need to compare the iPad 1 to the Android tablet available at the time the iPad 1 came out. Oh wait, there wasn't one!

I bought an ipad 1 which did what it was bought for. UNTIL the manafacturer ie. Apple updated the iOS
Thats what most people are "whining" about.
The deliberate ploy by Apple to get you to upgrade.
If when I bought my car, the manafacture did an engine mod after five years that meant the car no longer functioned without breaking down every day they would be out of business very quickly.
Its technology its moved on, is no excuse for causing a problem that you are not prepared to sort out. I accept that as websites get memory hungry and things move on that the ipad 1 will struggle with them. but thats not the case, it struggles with the basic functions that it handled prior to iOS 5
Crashes in apps, crashes in safari on basic websites, totally random. IF it was only memory it would do it all the time every time on the same websites. Why has it done it twice while I have typed this? Yet touch wood its let me get this far now?

I have a first generation iPad and I still consider it the most impressive item of hardware ever. Safari doesn't crash for me and the original battery performs as it did when new. I have recommended iPad to many of my friends and have heard no complaints.
Perhaps I have been lucky, or perhaps it is the type of apps I use and websites I visit, but iPad has sold Apple to me and my next computer will be a Mac.

My WHINE (take note of capitals Data Wrangler !!) is that Apple couldn't care less about it's customers in this instance. FYI I am on my 3rd new machine from Apple in Geneva and they all do the same thing...only since upgrading the OS (check back on my previous posts for fuller picture and my frustrations...

Do all of us think Apple should step up to the plate and offer a better, customer service-oriented solution that acknowledges the iPad 1 problem. Yes. Do we all think Apple doesn't care about its customers?
No way.
Generally, Apple, Inc. produces the very best computing products on the planet and delivers an extraordinary and delightful customer sevice experience. Occasionally, the company stumbles. On average though, Apple usually delivers. Sometimes, new Apple customers or early adopters of first-generation products lose perspective of this. but the reality is that first-generation buyers of any new product assume some investment risk too. It's the way of the world.
Here's a recent example from Daring Fireball of the problems other tablet manufacturers encounter:

The GPS signal works for a certain amount of time, anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes, and then it simply conks out, leaving the user without a connection. The Nexus then tries to hunt for a signal without any success. Rebooting the tablet seems to restore GPS, but then the pattern repeats itself with the signal again dying out after several minutes.

Has Apple replaced these problem machines or have you purchased replacements? If Apple repeatedly has replaced them all, it seems to me the company is doing precisely what it should be doing. If I were you, I'd also be looking closely for other possible causes about now (i.e. some odd, wildcard factor: Apps or Web sites causing the crashes; an old modem or router or device firmware; your household Internet wiring; other conflicting software, etc., etc., etc. Maybe some third factor contributes to your issues). Sometimes, you just cannot be 100% certain of the causes certainly, this must be terribly frustrating...

Aug 11, 2013 8:22 AM in response to geopixby Suissejas,Go back to my previous posts - I repeat again...these were replacements with OS 5 on them and I have taken them home as given to me in the shop (ie. vanilla no apps etc..) - applied OS 6 and whammo...guess what... I have also replicated the problem in the shop before the very eyes of the disbeleiving assistant who could only exclaim 'well I haven't seen that before' and then promptly replacing the machine again !!!!
Frustrating doesn't cut it believe me ....

You are not lucky. You are getting the experience that most iPad users have.
If you notice it is always the same few people who complain on this post. For whatever reason, they are having problems, yet rather than getting one of the new cheap Android tablets, they continue to whine about the fact their first generation iPad won't do everything that the latest generation iPads and Androids do.
