Who the f** i am? And Apple will contact the admins of the large newspaper-pages like www(dot)spiegel(dot)de or engadget, theverge and the like to have them edited their webpages for me? IT'S SUCH A FUNNY JOKE! THINK DIFFERENT, here i come ...

Sep 2, 2013 12:07 PM in response to gogegaby Sam Katz1,Reporting faulty webpages (exact urls, not domain names) may allow them to alter the browser or help the developer.
In any case, if you can agree to pay $20, you can actually get real time help, and they will not charge you unless it's fixed.
Some people in this thread have found help that way, although by and large it may not be fixable.
I wanted to point out that Walmart has just discounted the iphone 5/ipad 2/ipad 4 by $50 meaning you can pickup an ipad 2 for $350. That is $150 dollars off what the original ipad 1 was, and is a very good deal. It will be supported by iOS 7.
Although the existence of a discount may mean that they are refreshing hardware soon, but in that case, the third-party trade in programs will be available.

Sep 2, 2013 3:10 PM in response to Benway1by Data Wrangler,To Benway1,
I may have been the one who first used the term "End Of End". It is a specofic term relating to the fact that a product that is no longer supported.
Consider the iPad 1 (the very first one). It was a test. No one new if it would be popular. It was universally panned by the media when it first came out. It only has 256MB RAM. It is obviously out of warranty. iOS 5.1.1 is as recent as it goes. It is old. Like the first PC in a Windows 7 world. The Gen 5 iPad will be announced this fall with 16x the performance (it doubles every generation). The original iPad is the very definition of "End of Life".
AND YET ... I use my Gen 1 iPad to: surf the web, write and maintain a daily blog, manage bank/401k/stock/medical accounts, track three personal and one business email account, listen to a large collection of music via iTunes Match, watch movies iTunes/Netscape/YouTube/Vimeo, monitor my home security cameras, play single and multiplayer games, etc., etc, etc. for an "end of life" product I continue to get a lot of value out of it. My wife has a Gen 3 iPad; my friend a Gen 2 iPad. They work flawlessly.
Yes we all occasional run into poorly constructed web websites that crash Safari ... and I have to be vigilant to kill apps I am not using to conserve memory.
This is why I take umbrage at some posters going on and on about how they have been mistreated by Apple and how they are on their 500th replacement iPad and it still doesn't work. And that no one should by Apple etc., etc. It just doesn't fit with my personal observations. I am not calling them out, because if they are telling the truth I feel truly sorry for them.
Then again it is well documented that Samsung pays posterS to go on sites and trash Apple. Just sayin'.
Don't take everything you read on the web at face value. (I guess including this post)

Sep 3, 2013 3:25 AM in response to Data Wranglerby Fujifilm,Once again Data Wrangler misses the point just because his ipad has the occasional safari crash therefore the hundreds of thousands that are having more problems than that are either lying or just disrespecting apple for the fun of it.
END OF LIFE is different to FORCED END OF LIFE
The introduction of iOS5.1.1 killed the ipad1 prior to that apart from the odd glitch it was no problem.
So its not End of life as in my electric drill finally died because its 5 years old and used everyday.
Its end of life because your mighty Apple killed it off!
I only report from my experience with my ipad, thats to say one day it worked the next day it did not. WHAT CHANGED!
Unless the planets realigned or something of that nature that I dont know about, it was iOS5.
I am waiting to be proved wrong, Mr Data Wrangler you telling me yours works is not doing that. You it appears are one of the lucky ones.

Sep 3, 2013 6:58 AM in response to Fujifilmby Data Wrangler,Fujifilm,
I question your "hundreds of thousands" figure.
Even so, with a production base of 15 million original iPads (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad_(1st_generation)), 150,000 affected iPads would be 1%. Just trying to keep things in perspective.
The difference between you and I is that you continue to cling to the belief that Apple intentionally released iOS 5.1.1 to force users to upgrade. "introduction of iOS5.1.1 killed the ipad1" ... "Its end of life because your mighty Apple killed it off!"
It's not my Apple and iOS 5.1.1 did not kill it off. The iPad 1 still works for at least 14 million users (assuming 1 million impacted iPads).
Just trying to keep things in perspective. I am not missing your point ... just vehemently disagreeing with it.

Sep 3, 2013 9:30 AM in response to Data Wranglerby Fujifilm,I am yet to find anyone apart from you thats not having loads of problems, as I do not know the actual figures I am guessing at hunreds of thousands it could well be millions. I have no idea.
You say it works for 14 million users. How do you know this? I can only go off the amount of complaints on forums such as this.
I do not believe and have never stated that Apple deliberatley released iOS5 to kill it off so please do notimply that I did.
I do believe however that the release of iOS5 caused a lot ( no idea how many ) of ipad users to experience problems.
NOTE: They had no problem prior to its release, this would suggest to most rational people that something in that release caused the problem.
If the prior release was OK and Apple accidentally caused the problem, why would Apple not allow a roll back? All those with problems would have a fix overnight.
We would THEN be in the position that you promote. As time goes by the Ipad1 would not run certain apps, it would struggle to cope with new technologies. End of "useful" life.
What you fail to appreciate is the problems people with the "dodgy" ipads have, which is fair enough because you do not have the problem. You seem to think its a case of safari crashing once in a while. For me safari crashing once would be a joy. MY ipad went from being a useful tool that I loved using, to a waste of space overnight. I know what caused it and you can vehemently disagree with me.

Please re-read your quotes:
"END OF LIFE is different to FORCED END OF LIFE"
"The introduction of iOS5.1.1 killed the ipad1 prior to that apart from the odd glitch it was no problem."
"Its end of life because your mighty Apple killed it off!"
What part of the above would not lead me to the conclusion that you "never stated that Apple deliberatley released iOS5 to kill it off"? My apologies if I misunderstood you.
Fujifilm said, "I am yet to find anyone apart from you thats not having loads of problems, as I do not know the actual figures I am guessing at hunreds of thousands it could well be millions. I have no idea."
That is true, you have no idea. The hard and true fact is that there are 15 million original iPads (+-) out there. A few hundred thousand or even a few million is but a few percent of the total.
Once again just trying to keep things in perspective. (As I type this out on my first Generation iPad).

Sep 3, 2013 10:46 AM in response to Fujifilmby Suissejas,Fujifilm...spot on..all was well until the update came out and then I, liike you, have a peice of junk which will turn off even if I just look at it !!! (not quite but close enough..)
Data Wrangler - I envy you and your great Ipad but please remember there are those out there with crap (over 1/2 million views on this particular thread) who are getting no recognition from Apple at all and that is what rankles with me at least.

Sep 3, 2013 10:54 AM in response to Suissejasby Sam Katz1,I just want to say, it's worth contacting Apple support if you haven't already... offering to pay the fee if they fix it. If they don't, you're just out your time.

Sep 3, 2013 11:10 AM in response to Sam Katz1by Suissejas,Sam - I live in Geneva (Switzerland) and when this first happened I took the machine in to the local shop - honestly they haven't got a clue on how to fix a broken pencil let alone an Ipad !! They gave me a replacement unit (3 times...yes THREE times !) and the same thing happened (which incidentally I repeated in front of their eyes). Why would I send it to support somewhere in the world after this experience...and I am NOT paying them anything believe me .....
I could prove the problem if they would allow a roll back in OS but as you know that ain't gonna happen....

P.S And btw, apple support is only $20, and that includes any escalations.
