Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Don't think Disqus can do much about Safari crashing on iPads, it's not limited to Disqus, as people have said it's also happening with Twitter and Facebook when logging in or posting on sites. The iPad Diagnostics history often come back as low memory, this sounds more like an iPad issue, I wouldn't single-out Disqus.

The problem occurs on multiple websites - i.e Twitter and Disqus and it also occurs on other sites but I'm not able to reproduce the problem as easily as the Twitter and Disqus type sites. Its an OS7 issue and it needs to be fixed.

The other telling point it that the problem doesn't happen on a Windows 7 box.

The Apple senior advisor I've been working with on this (he is talking to the engineers) asked me to post asking people to report this to Apple through AppleCare. If your device is less than a year old, you are covered even without AppleCare.

He said to be film and let them know you are reporting the issue, have worked on it, and if necessary ask to speak to a senior advisor. He's trying to get the word out not to hassle people with fixes or replacements. Knowing what web sites crash would be helpful. There is now some evidence the issue is related to some CSS coding. Thanks, Mitch! But it's still Apples problem.

He's read some of these threads and gets it.

Possibly already posted: Amazon.com (for one retailer) will give you $$$ credit for your iPad1 when purchasing a newer model from Amazon, no matter where you bought the original iPad.  That's what I intend to do after the first of the new year.

UPDATE: After a week now of using iOS 7.0.4 on iPad Air I can report that the Safari crashing problem is, amazingly, EVEN WORSE than before.  This is unacceptable and needs to be fixed, and Apple needs to keep hearing from us until it is fixed. I hope every iOS user who has experienced this problem will report it to Apple feedback: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

But that's the point precisely. I can completely understand that a "memory intensive website" may be impossible to handle for a small device. But that doesn't justify crashes at all. Well-written software is aware of its limitation. Sloppy software just keeps working until it starts doing the impossible and it crashes.

And here we are mostly talking of Apple software (Safari, say), running on an Apple operating system (iOS), on Apple hardware (iPad).

Because the Apple apologists often blamed the website upthread, over the last few days I compiled information about some of the many crashes my iPad 1 has. This is a partial list:

My iPad crashes on (among many other sites, these are just the ones I remember from the last two days)

    www.latimes.com

    www.lanacion.com

    www.eldia.com.ar

    www.leaderpost.com

    dailyhealthpost.com

    mydiet.com

    facebook.com

    google.ca

    Other apps that crashed:

    Skype

    Jetpack Joyride

    Settings

    App Store

It would be nice to know in what sense the "Settings" app is "memory intensive".

Amen.  I will add to this that: (1) The constant Safari crashes I have had since iOS 7 include many on several websites that never seemed to cause such issues in the past on iOS 6.  In other words, I still frequent most of the same sites I always did, and the Safari crashes are definitely a product of iOS 7 not the sites.  (2) This problem persists even on iPad Air and, if anything, is even worse since updating to iOS 7.0.4.  It's rather ridiculous for Apple's newest hardware and software to have such problems.  iOS 7 is striking me as the most half-baked Apple release since Maps.

I am using 5.1 on an iPad 1 and safari crashes all the time.  The problem is with safari...NOT the OS!

    Hi Tinchote,

If the "Settings" app is crashing, this is not a Safari/CSS/HTML or Javascript problem. You are in the wrong thread. You need to post a new thread. I would also recommend opening a new case with Apple and solely have them diagnose one thing at a time. "settings" app crashes when opened is a fairly simple one to triage, and hopefully solve.

Something is happening on your iPad that has happened to no other ipad I have ever used.

Anyone that is having the "Settings" app crash is having a more low-level problem than Safari. This thread should only be used to report problems that are isolated to Safari.

You may be right, but (1) Safari is part of iOS (at least from my, non-computer-geek end-user perspective), or at least comes inextricably bundled with it, and (2) my experiences suggest it has something to do with how Safari interacts with other apps in iOS 7 because some of my issues seem to occur when multitasking between Safari and other apps.  Said apps and Safari worked (mostly) fine before iOS 7, and I have the latest "iOS 7 ready" versions of the apps installed.

This thread continues to be dog's breakfast of iPad 1 owners complaining unhappy with performance under iOS 5.1.1 and later iPad owners unhappy with iOS 7.0.x performance.

The common thread appears insufficient memory;  either physical RAM or inadequate memory management by iOS and /or Safari

    Sam, et. al.

Safari seems to trigger the crashes, but we don't know if Safari is he cause. I've had a crash in Mail, but most occur in Safari.

We and Apple need to hear about all the crashes so we and Apple can see the whol issue. It sounds more and more like a memory allocation or memory leak that may cut across apps. As in ios7.

And isn't it beyond belief that Apple will NOT ACKNOWLEDGE this problem?

My iPad3 has been crashing since I got it.  And the replacement does the exact same thing.  I feel certain they replaced my original dud with someone else's returned dud.  They will not help me.  "Reset" is all they can say.  Never again will I purchase from this unethical company.  I am about to smash this piece of carp and mail the pieces to Tim Cook.  I'm beyond exasperated.  I can't in good conscience sell this dud to another person, which is what Apple suggested I do after, once again, "resetting."  (A d I have not installed OS7 yet due to the larming reviews.  Lso, excuse the missing letters in my post.  My keyboard skips letters when it feels like it; I'm sick of correcting all the errors caused by this defective iPad.)
