Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

For what it's worth - I am seeing this on my brand new iPad Air (anyone else?).

I just upgraded to the Air from my trusty old ipad 1. On the iPad 1, I had the safari crashing issue COMSTANTLY.  Well, not constantly, but you know what I mean...  I'd say it would crash every 5-10 minutes of web browsing. One of the main reasons I got the Air was because of this. On the Air, it happens far less but does still happen.

    Oh we'll...

Yes, I have had the exact same experience with iPad Air, coming from iPad 2.  There is marginal improvement, but Safari still crashes multiple times a day, which is unacceptable. I am not happy.

I've been experiencing the Safari crash since getting the new Ipad Air and went to the Apple Store several times over it. On the last trip, they just swapped it out for a new one. Less than 12 hours later, Safari crashed again. After reading these posts, I'm amazed that the Geniuses I spoke with acted as though this was a big mystery.

    Apple needs to fix this.

I'm starting to wonder if anyone who works for Apple actually uses an iPad or other iOS device running iOS 7 in daily life.  Perhaps no one there does; that's the only explanation I can think of for Apple personnel not being aware of this problem.

They do own and use these.

They are very aware of the problem.

    There will be a fix.

Again, if you are having multiple crashes in Mail, and Safari, you need to be posting in a different thread. In these new 7.0 crashes, I suspect firmware corruption and would recommend that you ask for a "DFU restore" from itunes to solve this problem, and I would recommend that you not upgrade over wireless as a matter of policy.

I trust that all those things are indeed the case.  :-)  I was being a little sarcastic in my earlier post.  Though I am genuinely baffled by these tales of Apple specialists apparently finding it news to them.

I'm a little baffled at that, too. The inability to communicate to their legions.

But I don't think heave had to deal with an issue like this (not like the antenna problem), or that many issues at all. Couple that wih the explosion in the size of support staff. So I'm hoping they're  learning from his.

I'm not an apologist for them, but they do have a prettiy good record of support and outstanding products.

I kep asking "What Would Microsoft Do?"

Everyone with a new iPad Air or anyone running on iOS 7.0.4 should consider moving their comments to the thread listed below.

    iPad Air low memory crash

Folks with new iPads should contact Apple Card and request to talk to a Senior Advisor

WHY??  We all have crashing occurring.  It has been going on before iOS7 and before iPad Air.  Why segregate the issues when they clearly indicate iPad failures and unwillingness of Apple to fix it.

Issues should be appended here so Tim Cook can read the thread and see the enormity.  Of course, they already know.  But they won't admit it.  And that's Apple's worst fail, failing to own up.

    To Ditto2u

That of course is your choice.

I guess it depends on whether you actually want to get the problem fixed, or just want a venue for ranting about your view of why Apple has failed you.

These forums are mostly frequented by non-employees just trying to help fellow users. You are complaining to the wrong people.

If you want Apple to know about it, contact Apple Care and open a support ticket.

That happens to my iPad, too. 4th generation, brand new, running iOS 7.0.4. I am deeply disappointed in this machine. With the Safari crashes, the iPad shuts down, too.

I really loved my iPad 2 so I thought it was time to upgrade, but I guess I chose the wrong brand this time. This Safari issue affects my job since I do a lot of work in Safari. I thought the last software update would address the crashing issue, but sadly, it didn't. It is high time Apple took their users' reported issues into serious consideration. (I like to believe that, if Steve Jobs were alive, the responsible ones would be fired on the spot.) I'm afraid I will have to advise all my co-workers and friends agains the iPad.

If it's brand new you need to return it.

If the ipad is shutting down, that is not just an application crash. It's what is known as a kernel panic. the ipad can't continue to operate and shuts down. This happened once on my ipad 2 and never happened again.

Repeatable kernel panics are almost always a hardware fault. No apple tech will disagree.

I am still using the original iPad which I bought within weeks of its introduction. It was rock-solid, never gave me a problem, handled everything. I have routinely upgraded the OS when a new one became available. I am currently running 5.1.1 which is the latest available for this 'antique'. However, since the last OS upgrade, all browsers crash constantly. I have downloaded Mercury browser, Skyfire browser, and others. All crash.

The geniuses at the Genius bar have exposed themselves as dishonest incompetents - rather than admitting they know of the problem and there is no immediate solution, they play around, close some apps and tell you that should do it. Fine if I didn't have to travel 15 miles to the store.

Is Apple morphing into Microsoft? Are they leaving the door open for a new player?
