Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Other replies to this thread said that the problem would still happen if I downloaded Chrome. That effects all browers?  Also iPad one users can't get all the updates.  I have an iPad one and I can't even use safari at this poiint it crashes so often.  If Chrome will work I will be thrilled to get it, but the feedback on this forum said it happens on all browsers.  Can anyone confirm this?

Let me check on the ipad one I have. Just for future reference. As bad as this sounds I would try to avoid update on older ios devices. The newest ios are optimized to work with faster hardware. I always wait to update my device to see what kind of bugs come with the update.

I haven't personally had a problem with chrome. It's free on the App Store. There's a dozen other web browsers free on the App Store as well. Try a couple of them out and see if that helps at all. And make sure you close all you multi tasking tabs that you aren't using. Download Sys-Lite is an app that monitors how much ram you have available it helps with the old ipad we have as well as the new ones

Oh and btw to everyone who thinks this is a problem that is simply fixed by getting a new ipad or that it's broken. News flash this is a SOFTWARE PROBLEM. iOS 7.1 is coming out in march it's already in its 5th beta stage and I'm pretty sure this problem will be fixed. A security update was released today. 7.0.6. I don't think this will fix the problem. But just be patient it's coming. Try mercury web browser. It has 4 1/2 stars with 658 reviews.

Most all iOS 7 browsers and apps that act as browsers have the same thing under the hood - WebKit.

Hats why you'll read many who report Chrome also crashing.

So your saying this is a WebKit problem? Chrome has never crashed on me. Have you tried any of the other browsers?

I've  had Chrome crash but I don't use it much. No others.

I'm not an engineer, so I can only speculate the causes, which I don't do any more.

Apple (a senior advisor) has told me it is an iOS problem. That's why replacements don't seem to make a difference.

I'm counting on an update, mid-March.

I've got an iPad 4, but had an Air that also crashed. I'm asking Safari.

If anyone's wondering, the 7.0.6 update didn't fix it. I am still experiencing frequent, random Safari crashes.  Please get your "stuff" together, Apple!

No one thought that 7.0.6 would fix the problem....iOS 7.1 coming in March hopefully will fix the problem. If not, then Apple has a bigger (massive) problem than anyone ever imagined.

Right; I didn't expect 7.0.6 to fix the problem, but just had a tiny glimmer of hope that it would. It wouldn't have been the first time Apple silently fixed a known stability problem, without acknowledging that this was one of the things in an update. Back in December, the 7.1 fix was supposedly being promised by Feb. 1. So here's hoping it doesn't get delayed even further, and that it really is a fix once it does finally come out. I remain disgusted that Apple released iOS 7 with such a massive flaw in the first place, let alone that it's taking so long to fix. I have now literally had nearly half a year with iOS devices having limited functionality, and over three months of owning an iPad Air that has never worked properly.  I'm pretty fed up right now.

Is anyone else talking to Apple or the media? I contacted a media outlet and nothing. I have been in touch with Apple so many times it borders on ridiculous. 15 people now and counting. I have done everything they have asked of me. I am holding out hope that they can fix it. They are still holding onto "it is a software issue and what did I do". ***! This iPad is awesome right up to the crash. I have documented every crash on the replacement iPad. Times and what pages are open when it crashes. Why are they always "this is the first I have heard of it". Engineers are involved and nothing! Come people we all paid top dollar to stay ahead of the junk and now it is catching up to us. Louder&LOUDER the squeaky wheels get the faster the grease gun comes out to quiet that wheel. Call them email them contact other medias!

I think I've found the problem and solved it.  It's Safari itself.

Decommission Safari on your iPad Air  (don't use).  Hit the AppStore and download Chrome and no more crashes.  After the 2/22/14 iOS update those Safari shutdowns turned into total device lockups for me.   The cause of those was the update and my use of the Google  Drive app though the Drive app never crashed or locked the device - it was always when using Safari.  I've deleted Drive and now run Chrome and no more troubles on the iPad Air.     I may add bad the Drive app, but clearly the issue is Safrari.

    Good luck!

P.S.   The side benefit is that if you use Chrome on your PC you'll see active/open tabs on your ipad, much the same as you would if you used Safari  on a MacBook (cross device access).

Also after hours in stores (and a iPad swap out to attempt to fix)  and on the phone with Apple Support, I pointed out this thread to them.  They said that they don't review these forums and that it's just for customers to try to help one another, but this may not be a reliable source.  I suggested that if they thought this was unreliable, they would better serve customers by engaging here or pulling this forum.  Either you're in or out of solving customers problems.

Hope they see this, but not holding my breath.

Maybe I will try downloading chrome. And when I buy a streaming device, it won't be Apple TV. And next tablet won't be apple either. This is ridiculous...

Safari crashes all the freaking time on any device with ios7.
