Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Thanks, while disappointing from Apple, this actually makes since.  Not much to do but wait them out.  I still have freezer problems than with MS by an order or two.

I have no problems waiting until they iron out all the bugs that cropped up since their huge one size fits all iOS rollout, and as you pointed out the alternative is far worse.

This has only been a real problem for me since IOS5...what a POS...Apple get on the stick already...this is a HUGE issue !

Same issues as others report for iPad 1. Safari worked fine until I upgraded to IOS 5.0, then it started crashing. Seems to happen randomly -- if it crashes, I just reopen Safari and go to the intended page. The page may be on a web site where I was successfully viewing other pages. It probably crashes every 20-40 pages. I upgraded to IOS 5.0.1, but Safari still crashes frequently.

I've had problems with Safari crashing on my iPad1 ever since downloading iOS5. Techrunch.com crashes virtually everytime I open it. Other sites crash frequently - probably 2-10 times per hour of web usage.  I've been to the genius bar 4 times. The first two times they deleted the os and I then restored (not from backup.) This didn't work. The third time they gave me a new iPad1. Still, no better. On each visit they told me they had never seen this problem. On the fourth visit, they finally checked this site and said since it's a common problem Apple is aware of it and they would probably release an update at some point. In the meantime, there is nothing to do but suffer. It's extremely annoying. If iPad2s had this issue there would be huge stink. One thing that does help is using the Opera browser, which can be downloaded from the app store. I've had no problems with it, even on techcrunch.com. Opera loads about as quickly as Safari and scrolling through web pages is much smoother and faster than Safari.

I was in there the other day to complain about my 4S battery life and had to endure listening to stuff like "it depends on usage" and "only losing 10% battery life in an hour is pretty good" instead of saying "Yeah it's screwed up, you should have waited for the 5".

They're trying to extend Steve's Reality Distortion Field out into the real world but it ends up sounding pathetic coming from someone who doesn't really really believe what they're saying.

Bottom line is somebody screwed up big time, but they obviously can't say that ;-)

iOS 5.0.1/Safari

Every since v5.0.1 was released, Mobile Safari has been occasionally crashing with Low Memory errors listed in iOS 5 Diagnostics. During the past couple of weeks, the number of crashes has been gradually increasing. During the last couple of days, Safari has been crashing very few minutes and the frequency seems to be increasing.

At this point, Safari is completely unusable.

I've tried surfing after rebooting, after first shutting down all other Apps, surfing with Autofill off, one Safari window and one tab, but it's still crashing. While Safari is my most used App and usually the one listed with the largest process at the time of each crash, Springboard also sometimes is listed and other Apps have been identified too, including Flipboard, AngryBirdsRioHD and TWC-iPad.

I abhor the idea of restoring this iPad from scratch and manually reinstalling all the Apps. In the first place, this is precisely how I installed and set up iOS 5 on this device to begin with. And ustomizing an installation is not a quick-and-easy process.

@ Tribeca90 - The iPad2 does have the same problems...

Please go back to the apple store and request a DFU restore. Ask them to setup as new ipad, *do not* restore your ipad from backup.

Also, for troubleshooting purposes, you may wish to turn off Javascript, and clear all website data, or cache and cookies.

None of my friends who have iPad2 have this problem. And, dfu restore didn't fix the problem for me. Tried it twice. I use the Opera browser about half the time now to avoid the issue.

The problem may occur less frequently on the iPad 2 because it has more physical memory, however, I have seen reports of the problem occuring on the iPad 2 as well.

The problem doesn't happen using the Opera browser because Opera does not use Webkit; it uses its own Presto rendering engine. The Safari bug being experienced is likely in Webkit.

I switched to Opera and it has not crashed yet.  Only time I use Safari now is when I make a mistake and hit the icon, then it crashes, usually in about 2 minutes, then I open Opera and get on with life.  I like Safari better but am learning to like Opera!

I have same problem. Although my crashes have now developed a pattern. (Example: editing a listing on eBay always causes crashing at exactly same spot, over and over.)

I have spoken to "AppleCare" numerous times. Everything they seems to help at the time, but soon after I encounter new websites that causes new crashes.

I finally took my iPad to APPLE STORE and gav the problem to a GENIUS to solve. He prayed over my Pad, spoke some technical mumbo jumbo, went to the BACK ROOM, reformatted my iPad and declared my AppleCare Coverage void because I had dented the aluminum back when dropped on carpet.

I guess the definition of AppleCare is: You have coverage until something goes wrong, than we find a scratch, or dent and declare your coverage VOID because you are to be punished for not being perfect.

Problem unsolved!

I hate to be such a Dufus, but what is a DFU restore?

And when you go home to reinstall your applications, music, and all your life's work from your IMAC's Safari, what exactly are you NOT SUPPOSED TO DO?
