Please go back to the apple store and request a DFU restore. Ask them to setup as new ipad, *do not* restore your ipad from backup.

No. Request that they fix the problem but let them decide how to do it. If they comply with your request and you still have the problem, they can respond with "Well, we did what you asked."

Re: iPad Safari crashing regularly
None of my friends who have iPad2 have this problem. And, dfu restore didn't fix the problem for me. Tried it twice. I use the Opera browser about half the time now to avoid the issue.
Your friends must be VERY lucky, I've just gone from an iPad 1 16GB 3G to an iPad 2 32GB wifi, and it's gone from annoying to totally unusable on occasions. The iPad 2 is crashing every few minutes on certain sites, (no flash involved), mostly forums, like AVForums.
iPad 1 was iOS 5.01, iPad 2 is iOS 5.01.
Apple need to sort this, and quickly, or I can see a new (non-Apple) tablet in my future.

Dec 18, 2011 5:55 PM in response to Pitlosby Raingod,I did a DFU restore following the instructions that were posted a few pages back, everything worked fine for like 1 day, but then it started crashing again, and like some others have said it isnt just Safari, lots of other apps will also crash. I'm thinking on bringing my Ipad in to Futureshop where is bought and see if they can send it out for repair under their warranty. Only problem is that one of the corners of the back has a giant gouge in it from when i had dropped it.

Dec 19, 2011 10:43 AM in response to Trottskiby PilotSmith,I recommend you just wait for an update from Apple to fix this problem. It is shocking they have not fixed this yet but I still have faith in Apple to get on the ball and put out an update to address these problems. I spent a few hours in vain trying to " fix" my iPad2. Nothing solved the problem. If they take too much longer I am going to do something so that they will swap out my ipad2 and I will then sell it and buy an Android product. After all, I primarily use my iPad for email and web browsing. Not exactly rocket science so I'm sure there are a few tablets that at this point will do a much better job at that than my iPad with the added benefit of supporting Flash.

Dec 19, 2011 10:53 AM in response to PilotSmithby krakas,PilotSmith, if I may:
- I'm not sure any android tablet out there will be halfway as good as an iPad that crashes, even just for browsing and email (which is not rocket science, but isn't trivial either)
- Adobe is dropping flash on mobile. They just released 11.1, with major known bugs (how surprizing), and that's the last release they'll do on mobile,
That means two things:
- you'll be left with a ******, bugged flash player (some would say that's a pleonasm)
- websites will definitely stop distributing flash content to mobile devices, knowing that there's no player for it. Anybody serious has already stopped using flash for mobile devices, that's just the final nail in the coffin.
And yes, it *****. Big time.
That apple has such a monopoly on tablets that using a broken browser is better than anything else.

Dec 19, 2011 11:11 AM in response to krakasby Vx99,Krakas, I don't think the Safari crashes are anything to do with flash, I have had plenty of crashes from sites without any flash content. I do have a sneaky suspicion that it is something to do with java not rendering properly, as turning JavaScript off does seem to make a difference (unfortunately it also means things like drop down menus don't work any more, making Internet browsing even more pointless).
One thing for definite, Apple has dropped the ball totally on this Safari bug, and are beginning to look like incompetent idiots by not acknowledging and fixing what is a huge problem for most people who bought an iPad for browsing.
-
Dec 19, 2011 11:13 AM in response to Vx99by krakas,I didn't mean flash had anything to do with safari's crashes, just that an android tablet would be, in my opinion, a far lesser experience than an iPad (even one that crashes) and that flash is now completely irrelevant on mobile, so it's a non argument.

Dec 19, 2011 11:25 AM in response to Rob Bruenby David Bogie Chq-1,This thread started in June, 2010, long before iOS5 was released so whatever is causing Safari to crash now may or may not even be related.
So far, we don't know much:
Most of this Safari crashing occurs on iPad first generation units, not so much if at all on iPad2s.
Other browsers may work with more stability than Safari. Might not.
Seems to have started for most of us after upgrading to iOS5.
Turning off Java might help. Might not.
Doing a complete DFU does not cure this issue although it might temporarily make it go away..
Personally, this crashing of Safari bugs me but my use of my old iPad is not critical so, unlike some of us, I'm not really all that bothered by it. I hope there is a solution for us, though Apple may or may not ever get around to addressing this in the iOS for older hardware. I have no faith at all in Apple's willingness to assign resources to obsolete products. Much better for Apple if we all bought new iPads.

Dec 19, 2011 11:29 AM in response to Rob Bruenby Tribeca90,Has there been any coverage of this in media? I've seen nothing except on the apple discussion boards. You would think if it was really impacting a good percentage of ipad users techcrunch would write about it since its site crashes most consistently.

Dec 19, 2011 11:32 AM in response to Tribeca90by David Bogie Chq-1,I've done an extensive search for this topic several times. The most reliable hit is, in fact, this thread, which has received almost 90,000 views.

Dec 19, 2011 11:39 AM in response to David Bogie Chq-1by Philly_Phan,Quantity of views means absolutely nothing, zero, nada, bupkus. I've probably viewed this thread several hundred times and I've had no problems whatever.

Dec 19, 2011 11:50 AM in response to Rob Bruenby alejandrofrommiami shores,My IPad also constantly crashes with many of the installed Apps. Makes it hard to work.
IT also makes me wonder about the airlines (American and United) that are using the IPad in their cockpits. I wonder if pilots are having these same issues.
I hope a solution comes about soon.

If they had any units like that, I'm certain that they were swapped out.
