Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

I brought my crashing iPad 1 to the genius bar and they found nothing wrong when they ran diagnostics. They suggested I reboot it once a day, and also try resetting it and then syncing it again - but not from a backup. I'm thinking eventually there'll be an update that helps, because it's so clearly from the upgrade on the latest OS.

OK guys, I've got to jump back in here.  First a disclaimer.  I can't give you any confidence that this proposed solution will work because, as you're aware, I am not experiencing the problem.  However, I did experience an very severe but unrelated problem and this is what I had to do to resolve the issue.  First I did a simple Reset (Home and on/off until the Apple logo appears) and it didn't help.  Then I did a Restore with a reload from the backup and that also accomplished nothing.  Then, I did a Restore as new with NO reload from backup and that resolved my issue.

IF you choose to try the same thing, here are some cautions.  Make absolutely certain that all apps, music, movies, etc. are present in the iTunes library.  Also make absolutely certain that all "regular" data, such as pdf files, Word files, etc. are present and accessible somewhere on the computer's hard drive.  Be aware that you will probably lose all game data (scores, etc.).  I did not investigate a solution for that because I don't play many games and I really don't care about the game history.  Finally, be forewarned that it is a bit tedius recreating all your folders and putting each app where you want it.

Turning off Javascript is merely a troubleshooting measure. Please try clearing website data in settings -->Safari . If this doesn't work, do a DFU restore as outlined below.

http://www.ifans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=279343 tells you how to do a DFU restore. Make sure you transfer purchases and do a final sync before doing this. Do not restore from backup. Setup as new ipad instead.

Excellent discussion about what a Javascript bug looks like.

Let me point something out here: you must be willing to try a restore, or dfu restore. It will be right when Safari stops crashing, of course we're not going to ask you to turn off the javascript after a restore. The whole point is to fix it.

    If javascript fixes it:

    1. First go to safari in settings, and delete website data ("clear website data".) Turn back on javascript. Is problem fixed.

    2. If not, do a DFU restore as outlined previously, transferring purchases and doing a sync beforehand.

In the event that it doesn't, take it to the apple store or third party ASP for resolution.

I will point out that for those of you that think it's a bug, the only way apple will notice is if you report it to them directly, and allow them to use you as a test case. Other people on these communities have found resolution by following the steps above, or visiting a genius bar. Please do that.

Same for me.  I wonder if it's because of all the open tabs?  If I close some apps it seems okay for a few surfs, then bam!  Always happens on newspaper web sites (paid subscriptions). AND can't go back to front page after reading article.  iPad is problem though.  Newsstand ALWAYS crashes, too.

Is it the IPad or Safari or iOS?  I've tried the recommended fixes, except the DFU restore, and it still crashing.  I think it's actually crashing more frequently.  Apple, please help.  Besides the crashing, I love my IPad.

Safari on my iPad crashes regularly after iOS 5 upgrade. It is mind boggling that such a basic and essential functionality was broken by the OS upgrade AND there is no official word on the issue.

"It Just Works" has become "It Just Crashes". Very dissappointing, Apple!

I started using Opera which is not great solution for other reasons, but at least it does not crash.

<this post was copied from other similar thread to hopefully draw more attention from apple>

Apple don't really read these forums (at least not officially).

I suggest EVERYONE who has the crashing bug on their Safari send feedback to Apple to tell them.

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

If they get enough feedback they will have to do something.
