Jan 14, 2012 7:18 PM in response to Southloopswaby aimeefromtopsham,I don't know if this will help or not, but I turned everything off in the settings (iCloud, etc.) and turned on the debug console, and that finally seemed to help. I don't have nearly the amount of crashes that I used to. I had tried everything else and it did not work. Even the DFU restore. And yes, I did it right. The only thing that I have left on is the pop up blocker. I had called Apple, and the tech person that I spoke to told me that doing a DFU restore should be used only as a last resort. There was a person earlier on this thread that had recommended the debug console, but I have forgotten who it was. Good luck, everyone!

Jan 14, 2012 8:23 PM in response to CobraJetby Backtrack,CobraJet - yes my ipad required a jailbreak. I'm not advocating jailbreaking --- hopefully that statement keeps my posts from being deleted....or going negative on my points o_O

Jan 14, 2012 8:36 PM in response to Backtrackby Backtrack,Wow - admins are quick. Post didnt get deleted but the meat of the post was. best of luck in your searches - guess i've said all i can say bout it. We'll i guess with that the topic will be kept alive for users to continue being vocal about this ongong issue and get a resolution from apple and not a workaround fix. All i gotta say is ive been sick this week and have done an excessive amount of ipad web browsing this week...and not a single Safari crash...which is highly unusual from my browing experience in the prior year+. Background ad fetching/rendering causing Safari to crash on page loads.

Jan 14, 2012 9:49 PM in response to Southloopswaby scvdesigns,I am not alone. Yes, this update to my iPad (original) is a giant step backward. Safari crashes on my iPad several times a day. Very annoying. It could happen when I click on a link, or filling out a form, or just a random thing. At first I thought it crashed because I had too many apps open. Now I only keep a few apps open, but there still is no change in Safari crashing. Yes, the previous version of Safari was much more stable. It NEVER crashed.

Jan 15, 2012 5:36 AM in response to Backtrackby Sam Katz1,Your post about ad blocking was actually useful. I have noticed as a network administrator that facebook and other tracking cookies and security certificates can cause odd behavior.
I'm wondering if the router isn't handling some of Facebook's ways of tracking users "correctly". Note that this can happen anywhere the facebook API is called. Pandora, Yelp, news sites, including Huffington Post. Google may use similar methods. So may Amazon.
It may be worth testing with different router brands and seeing whether that makes a difference. I have a G White Netgear myself. WPN824v2. You will obviously want to buy a netgear model that is explicitly labelled as "ipad compatible" to see if that makes a difference. It may be a DNS/security certificate issue/cookie issue with certain sites.

Jan 15, 2012 6:52 AM in response to Sam Katz1by karenvb,Sam, since I'm a tech weinie, I had to read your post twice and I'm still not sure I understand it. But I'm wondering if because I refuse to sign into Facebook through any other app, my problem is nowhere near as acute as some who have written here. There are many more sites than the ones you list here that would like me to sign into FB through their site i.e. lots-o-news-sites.

Jan 15, 2012 7:02 AM in response to karenvbby JimHdk,There won't be any Netgear router branded as "iPad compatible". WiFi devices are implemented according to industry standards (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) any router implementing these standards should work with the iPad. I doubt a router could cause problems with the data items you suggest unless, perhaps, some sort of firewall is turned on in the router.

Jan 15, 2012 7:41 AM in response to karenvbby Sam Katz1,Not logging into facebook through external sites and having stricter privacy settings with regard to the platform will indeed minimize your exposure if indeed I am right in my hypothesis.
"
Would turning on private browsing mode fix it?
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2010/05/more-privacy-facebook-new-privacy-controls
(turning off platform applications may also help.)"
Some other suggestions from someone having problems on a laptop with facebook.

Jan 15, 2012 7:53 AM in response to JimHdkby Sam Katz1,Netgear does brand newer devices as ipad compatible (correction: "cd-less ipad compatible setup"), which is a good idea because some of their devices weren't previously due to some weird bug in the firmware. I know about the IEEE standards. I know it shouldn't be. As you recall, there were some problems with dual-band routers as well.
Looks like I was wrong about "advertising" ipad compatibility. But to your point, many routers have SPI firewalls...
I should edit and say that I've seen this Facebook problem on both Linksys and Airport Express routers. I am experimenting with changing DNS to Google's, and some other methods to try and fix it. It appears to be a DNS caching issue as emptying the DNS cache on the laptops seems to fix it more often than not.
I am reluctant to recommend Netgear, actually.
Let's see whether opting out of the Facebook platform or turning on private browsing fixes this problem. (You may also want to opt out of personalization.)
Please post your routers that you have had success with, or not.

Jan 15, 2012 8:14 AM in response to Sam Katz1by Sam Katz1,I just searched for "safari javascript ipad crash" and found this:
It looks like there are three types of crashes:
1. Crashes appearing to stem from a jailbreak (we can't fix these, but a restore might.)
2. Crashes with youtune video or switching to youtube player (we've had a few mentioned in this thread)
3. crashes with "ads", namely Javascript and images, because the ipad does not support flash. Cookies or the facebook platform may be implicated, because it may increase memory consumption or create loops or make the page difficult to render, or simply put bad cookies or cache material in the browser that causes the problem and do not cause the problem for people that are not logged into facebook "persistently".
Bear in mind the facebook thing is a guess, also bear in mind that whether you are logged into a site, and a variety of factors may change the ads displayed. But if you are getting crashes repeatedly on a specific site that targets you, you may want to log out, delete cookies and cache, etc. and also contact the webmaster.

Jan 15, 2012 8:28 AM in response to Sam Katz1by scvdesigns,I think you are right. My crashes seem to be the third type. For example, a travel destination loaded with stuff to click - ads, eBooks, videos. Conversely, my husband has the same model of iPad that I do (the original). He has the latest OS update - same as me. He uses his iPad quite a lot - several hours per day. He has experienced ZERO crashes. Go figure.
-
Jan 15, 2012 8:50 AM in response to scvdesignsby Sam Katz1,does he experience zero crashes at the same websites?
Is this a website you have to log into?
Can you post it?

Jan 16, 2012 9:05 AM in response to Rob Bruenby CobraJet,Due to the redundant and continued issues with Safari, I have stopped using Safari as my browser on my iPad 2.
As you are all aware, there are multiple Browsers available through the Ap Store. There are (3) "pay for" Browsers available through the Ap Store of which have the highest reviews to date. I d/l'd the one with the highest reviews and so far, no browser crashing. These pay for browsers are .99-2.99. If you're a user who needs the Internet frequently without the crashes I suggest doing your research, as there are alternatives.
Until there is another OS update for the iPad I will not be using Safari as it is too unstable, which has been proven by many concerned iPad users on this site and the WWW globally.

Jan 16, 2012 5:20 PM in response to Rob Bruenby JonathanMBP,I've also experienced this problem since the last OS upgrade. It seems safari will crash about once a day on me, which never happened in IOS 4. I didn't notice the problem until IOS 5.1, but it could have been happening earlier. Frustrating. Please contact apple about the situation by filling out a bug report like I've done.
Good luck!
